So who likes benzos? El Benzo Threado Spectacularrrr 2nd Edition

Oxazepam is mostly prescribed for insomnia, particularly people who have issues staying asleep (it's got a reasonably slow onset). But also used for anxiety, depression etc.

As a sleep aid, I've found it quite decent (30mg). Can't comment on it's use for anything else.

Oxazepam was the first benzo I ever tried in the few years prior to actually being prescribed other benzos.

Used to love it for sleep, worked very well and I would still feel effects into the next day if I took 100mg+ (relaxation/anxiety-relief). Was a great sleep aid, which I used many times as I began to fall in love with benzos for their ability to turn an anxious, stimulated comedown (E, speed) into a peaceful, anxiety-free slumber. This was probably a big reason benzos began to sink their teeth into me and psychological dependance developed (always HAD to get benzos if I was using stims).

Then the guy who sold me the 30mg oxazepams began selling 1mg and 2mg alprazolam tabs and bars which would knock me right out when I would use them for comedowns. Coming home and having 2-4mg alprazolam, smoking some bongs would almost feel as good as the ecstasy and meth highs I was having while I was out. During these years I only used the benzos for comedowns and could save them for long periods of time without desiring to use them. During that time my connection usually sold oxazepam and alprazolam, and very occasionally diazepam, temazepam and bromazepam. The more I used them, the more I was loving them as I suffered from anxiety anyway.

Slowly but surely my anxiety (social anxiety) worsened (no doubt due alot to the drug use) and I found myself seeing a psychiatrist who prescribed me diazepam, this was the first time I actually acquired them legally after about 3 years of using them, though I had never become physically dependant on them during that time as I never used daily. Now I was using diazepam everyday and eventually became addicted which is when things turned for the worse. I should add, after extended daily use perma-tolerance develops and it becomes very difficult to gain anything from your benzos. I used them sparingly for ~3 years and they always worked a treat every time. But once physical dependance kicked in that all changed. It's like it activated something in my brain and I became more reckless with my drug use, drank more, got into opiates for a while etc and after a while I abused my prescription. Sometimes taking rediculous doses, alot of fucking BAD shit happened during that time which I won't go into. Eventually I said enough and tapered off them and was clean for around a year.

My anxiety started playing up again and I was having other issues going on aswell (massively psychological dependance on marijuana, smoking everyday, morning through until night) This increased my anxiety further and I also developed what my (new) psychiatrist believes to be adult ADD associated with terrible insomnia and mild depression.

He put me back on diazepam (20mg each night) though I treat them much differently now, unfortunately learnt that the hard way though. Though very rarely I'll use a large dose just to obliterate that feeling of anxiety for a while, but most nights I'll just take 5-10mg to keep my brain from the strong physical dependance. I'm also scripted d-amp, so if I'm feeling a little sketchy from them I'll take the full 20mg.

Sorry for the long post and I think I may have already posted my story in this thread before, but my memory isn't so good.

But to answer to threads title 'So who likes benzos?' I'd say I have a love/hate relationship with them. Just use them responsibly (not like I used to) and things should be fine, I say this to those that use daily.

tl;dr - Enjoy your benzos people, they're incredible tools for many things - but don't let them grab you by the balls like they did to me, especially if you have mental illnesses like anxiety disorders. Did I like benzos? I loved them!... Do I like them now? No, not really.

So, would you guys say alprazolam is probably the most popular benzo in the Australia area? I know, it varies and all, but in the USA alprazolam is by far the most common and preferred when there is a choice. It seems that in Australia, the benzos available are virtually the same minus temazepam in the USA... I am just curious if alprazolam has become the standard issue benzo in other, similar markets. Thanks ahead of time.

I find that alprazolams are the most common benzos here. Easier to obtain than than other benzos.

^Thanks. I got that impression from reading the thread; I just wanted to verify.

I would say alrazolam is the most commonly found on the black market but diazepam is probably the most commonly prescribed benzo. I think temazepam would be a lot more commonly abused if they made pills higher than 10mg, personally I think its a great benzo but for what you get out of a script its relatively worthless.

Alprazolam has a synergistic effect when combined with opiates, meaning that in addition to the short acting/rapid onset nature of it which lends itself to addiction, it is favoured by heroin users.

Also, its method of action (it acts on GABA receptors to give you a brain chemical based result) versus that of Diazepam (an all over muscular relaxant) and alcohol solubility make it very potent.

i agree that xanax has better synergistic effects combined with opiates but my preference is diazepam(it's gaba-ergic as well). it's metabolites (oxazepam, nor-diazepam and temazepam) are what makes it favourable for me as well as it's half-life vs that of xanax. admittedly diazepam is my preferred benzo in general

it's a lot easier to OD with xanax and opiates(namely methadone, but methadone/xanax OD is another story in itself vs other opiates) vs diazepam and opiates imo because the xanax dosage curb is sharper than that of diazepam.

xanax may be more widely abused on the street versus diazepam, but i would think diazepam is more widely scripted.

my question is why do you guys think xanax is easier to obtain on the street than diazepam?

I wouldnt say that diazepam is scripted more than xanax. Most benzos on the street are scripted anyways. Good question tho. I think that the word xanax is used alot more frequently thus people are rather interested in that.

just in my experiences, from people i know, talked to and read about, diazepam seems to be dispensed a lot more liberally than xanax

Xanax is generally a more short-term thing or an as needed prescription. While people will be scripted valium for daily use for long periods of time.

A good friend of mine recently got prescribed valiums and after he finished it they wouldnt do any repeats. I know it depends on the doctor but most dont like to repeat.

^Anxiety sufferers on benzos for extended periods are usually given valium with repeats, and it's also the benzo used to taper off with from stronger, shorter-acting benzos. Hence, it is commonly scripted.

Your right about doctors (GPs) not liking to do repeats but most psychiatrists will happily do it.

in reality they shouldn't be used as a long term fix, and the reason why doctors only prescribe maybe a month or two of them initially. in saying that, there are cases where people do need them legitimately long term.

they're to initially help (a band-aid) while you seek out therapy and alternate non-drug treatments to overcome. ie - CBT, therapy etc, etc.

benzo addiction is no walk in the park, i speak from experience.

yep, that's been what i've seen and heard of most often.

while people do stay on valium long term (i was at one stage), it's for legitimate reasons and doesn't just include seeing the doctor every month for the repeats.

Infected Mushroom,
Oxazepam is a muscle relaxant benzo. While it does aid in relieving anxiety, it’s great for all over relaxation, which then in turn helps with sleep, although this is not its primary purpose. Diazepam and alprazolam are both used specifically as anti-anxiety benzos. (Diazepam also for withdrawals cos of it’s long half life.) Temazepam is a hypnotic benzo, a weaker version of nitrazepam (mogadon) – these two are basically designed as sleeping tablets.
Temazepam and diazepam IMO are the two most commonly prescribed benzos.
Most of my friends are either prescribed diazepam, which seems relatively easy to get a script for if you legitimately need it, even just to have on stand-by (for flying etc) or they get temazepam to sleep. Also Ativan (lorazepam) is also common. I quite enjoy that probably cos I take it the least often, but it isn’t PBS scheduled so really expensive... Does anyone know why it’s not covered?
Leftwing, I think xanax is easier to obtain on the street because it is harder to get it scripted, people assumed there is a greater demand for it.
I am prescribed Xanax 3x2mg a day which i get as 100 + 3 repeats (thats with authority so they call up) then oxazepam and nitrazepam to sleep. I have been on benzos for chronic anxiety and subsequent insomnia for years. I did abuse them at one stage when I was younger but I was getting prescribed 12mg a day of xanax which was a jar a week. Now I get repeats easy, as long as I don’t chew threw my scripts to fast, which is pretty hard when i’ve got plenty, my doctor is chilled, I’ve been seeing him for a long time now, so its a trust thing too.
Doctors are now discouraged to prescribe benzos, but more so than only a three or so years ago. Firstly cos of dependence and xanax’s short half life makes it probably the most likely to become dependent on, I’m guessing, but it also has the most abuse potential – if it doesn’t knock you out first. Also the push to prescribe anti-depressants. Lucky for me my doctor is of the opinion if you aren’t depressed you don’t need anti-depressants. Pretty much all recreational value has gone, but I find them the best treatment in conjunction with CBT for my anxiety and I’m happy with it as a long term thing. I’ve tapered down significantly and my doses now are good.

I wish doctors here in the USA didn't have such a bad impression of diazepam. It's kind of stigmatized here as being more addicting than alprazolam, which I certainly disagree with. (So does Professor Ashton...) It can even be hard to get a prescription for tapering, which is a tragedy because it is perfect for this.

Tolerance

Does any one on here know if Benzo tolerance reduces with time off. ie If I abstain from using for a month or so will I be able to get similar effects as when I first started?

I don't have a huge tolerance and last time I took a break for about a year it seemed to work. I try not to have them more than a couple of times a week but have found that I am developing a tolerance again.

The ones Ive been having are temazepam, diazepam and alprazolam mostly for relaxation instead of alcohol.

i've never understood why xanax is so much easier to get scripted in the US; wondering why diazepam isn't prescribed more. dr ashton's manual to benzo taper is great imo

Been searching through the posts and Im getting frustrated so I thought I would just ask straight out and maybe somebody will just know the answer.
I have a prescription for 1 mg xanax. I never make it to the end of the month with them. I am buying xannie bars on Wednesday. How are they different? Why does a 2mg xannie bar feel different than 2 one mg xanax? Or am I the only one who notices a difference between 2 mg of xanax footballs and a 2 mg xannie bar?
