What SSRI/SNRI has worked best for you?

Just wanted to get everyone's opinion on which SSRI/SNRI has worked best for you and what you were/are taking it for.

My diagnosis is Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder and slight depression.

The following are the ones I've tried and what I think of them, starting with the first one I tried, ending with my current med.

1. Prozac (don't remember how many mg's) *took for about a year* - This was the first SSRI I took. I started having panic attacks about 15 years ago and didn't know what was wrong with me. I went to a psychiatrist and he told me all about 'anxiety' (we didn't have the Internet back then...or it certainly wasn't widely used). Anyway, it worked well, as far as I remember. It certainly pulled me out of my initial funk.

2. Zoloft 50 & 100mg *took on and off for about 6 years* - Worked good for my depression, but wasn't that great for my anxiety.

3. Wellbutrin - *took for 2 days* Absolutely sucked! After 2 days, I felt like I was crawling out of my skin. Was a total nervous wreck.

4. Effexor 75 & 150mg - *took for 6 months* This one I am split on. While it worked well for the slight depression I have, it wasn't so great for my anxiety. Made me too jumpy and hyper. Also, if I didn't take it at the same time every day, I'd get terrible brain zaps.

5. Paxil 40 & 60mg - *took for about 3 years* This worked very well for me. It helped my anxiety and curbed my depression. Unfortunately, it recently started crapping out on me. The downside has been coming off this medication. Had to ween over a 2 week period, and even during that time, I still got BAD brain zaps.

6. Pristiq 50 & 100mg - *have been taking for about 3 weeks* So far so good with this medication. At first, I was worried because not only is it new, it is being called the 'new Effexor' etc. For me, it has been very different from Effexor. I am not jumpy and it has had almost NO side effects. I know it may be too soon to tell whether this is really the medication for me, so far it is curbing my anxiety. As a side note, I learned to be patient with this medication. At first, it felt like I was taking a placebo but it finally started kicking in after about 2 weeks and after upping my dosage to 100mg. I know it takes 4-6 weeks for these meds to work, I have taken enough meds to know whether it is going to work for me or not within a week or so.

I know what you mean about opiates. They always lift my mood and make me anxiety and depression free. I really wish they would prescribe it as an anti-depressant.

I've taken Zoloft, Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, Cymbalta, Effexor, and Wellbutrin for anxiety and acute depression. None of them worked at all. I just got horrible side effects and no benefit form every single one.

Remeron(mirtazapine) works very well for me. I am prescribed the 45mg tablets but usually just take 15-30mg at night. Puts me to sleep and works well as an antidepressant for me. For first time users it may cause extreme drowsiness but that goes away in time. You may want to give it a try.

I tried smoking some weed (which always gives me horrible panic attacks, freaks me the hell out) while on oxy and beer over Christmas. It still freaked me out. Usually if I am smashed I can smoke a little weed and feel good. Not this time. The only difference is that I am now on Effexor. IDK if that made a difference.

As for the Effexor, I only have good things to say about it. Initially it made me really stomach sick, and each time my dose was upped it was the same. But I have been on 150mg for about a week now (my 4th week on it) and I have no side effects to speak of.

I've been on a few different SSRI's over the years, but not an SNRI. Out of all the SSRI's I've tried, citalopram (40-60mg's) seems to be the most effective. It isn't a magic cure, but it makes my depression less frequent and less intense. My diagnoses are Recurrent Major Depressive Disorder and Borderline Personality Disorder.

SSRIs have done nothing but make me suicidal. I have tried old ones, new ones, ect. They all make me feel like shit. I have tried them all.

How long did you take them? Just out of curiousity.

Prozac worked well for me, but I got sick of being asexual so I switched to Wellbutrin. The first week or Wellbutrin was pretty :X, but it worked well after that.

I had been on some sort of SSRI for at least a month since middle school then I would switch to a different one because it would make me suicidal.

Well there's your problem. SSRIs and SNRIs have a nasty side effect of potentially causing suicidal thoughts in children and young adults. It's not until age 26 that suicidal thoughts don't increase with any statistical relevance.

I have been on Sertraline for 8 months I am now on 150 mg/day.
I have noted very subtle, mild but definite anxiolytic effects.
But it's most effective as an Anti depressant for me, and makes my other perscriptions work far better.
Thumbs up for me, I wouldn't knock SXRI's up front.

I have taken Prozac, Zoloft and Paxil for various things at various ages...

All that ever happened is that they turned me into a zombie and I didn't like it.

Like many others here, SSRIs have simply zombie-fied me. Zoloft was the worst, strongest and quickest acting but also the one with the least side effects and I see why it is being prescribed more and more.

Unfortunately, I will have to take an SSRI or SNRI for the rest of my life. Anytime I have tried to get off of them, I become a nervous wreck and a constant worrier. I have accepted that I need medication, which sucks, but what else can I do? Counseling alone doesn't help. After trial and error, I've come to the conclusion that I have a chemical imbalance. I know I may get people claiming that is BS, but wondering what other people's thoughts are.

Just simply out of curiosity, does anyone else agree that some people have a chemical imbalance (that require medication) that causes depression and/or anxiety?

^ Oh, I do believe that a chemical imbalance is a real thing. These drugs can and do help some people; it's just that the studies done on them show that most of them are no better than placebo, and the side effects are more pronounced in some users.

Of course. In fact I would go as far as to say anyone who DOESN'T believe some people have a chemical imbalance are either stupid or scientologists. Bah, same thing.
