Drug Use and Being Normal?

q4e. although, even after a few months of sobriety i feel like i'm tripping.

i was forced into sobriety for almost 2 months and i had some very weird feelings/visuals while just sitting outside waiting for my boss. it was fuckin strange

Eh being sober is fun on its own, you need healthy hobbies though. Instead of going out and getting all fucked up I'll stay in and create some art or play some games. I am actually displeased with how many different substances I have been doing and plan on being sober for a month or more.

fuck society. all these cigarette smoking, coffee binging, alcoholics point their fingers at us 'drug users' ... take a look at yourself.

Look at anybody that you are friends with for example. I use drugs recreationally so thats "my problem", but you can pick out a major problem with most if not all people you know. Sex addicts, depression, too stubborn, functioning alcoholics. You can find something negative that is affecting the personality of everbody you know. Even insecure people that are so nice that they get taken advatage of, so drug use is as normal as any of these

Some problems have much worse effects than others though. For example, a rich guy who snorts heroin throughout the day isn't nearly as bad off as the guy who empties his bank account on cocaine, or someone who gets an F in Bio 102 isn't as bad off as someone who drops out of college.

Let's see... I'm a mentally ill transsexual meth addict.

Probably the furthest thing from "normal" that one can be!

As TJ would say (on 30 Rock), "Dat's OH KAY - YOU BE AS FREAKY DEAKY AS YOU WANT MY BRU---THAH!"

;-)

The world needs more people like you as far as I'm concerned ... it's too god damn boring as it is! And mental illness is subjective my friend ... if you're not happy, then yeah, you need a change. But if you do fine and can function the way YOU WANT to function, then fuck the haters and give the judgers a mirror!

When I say "Normal" I am talking about any human feeling or desire.
I believe that that vast majority of the feelings that we feel are experienced by at least millions of other people. So that no matter how "different" you view yourself the only real difference is perspective based on life experience, and even these experiences are more similar than many people realize. That's kinda what I mean by "being normal."

You just touched on an extremely deep subject. The human brain is the organ that manufacturs all of those feelings / emotions etc. and the human brain is the highest form of intelligence we know or could possibly understand.

Think about it ... the brain is very complicated ... so complicated in fact, humans don't seem to be able to understand it at all beyond stimulus / response science, and maybe chemical treatment such as hormones etc. But we have NO FUCKING CLUE how it does what it does or how to control it ... NONE!

I've heard it said by many scientists that it's quite possible the human brain ... since it is the organ that controls us ... cannot be understood at even the remotest higher levels! How could it? It IS a brain? How can a brain master itself? See the cunundrum here?

And if we can possibly never master the brain, then we're doomed to understand any possible higher life forms that might come to see us at any time ... just like a dog can't ever hope to communicate with or understand humans in any reasonable fassion ... we wouldn't be able to understand advanced aliens ... and so on ... and so on ...

But really ... the whole "Mentally Ill" thing or depression or whatever ... it's just something we learn to cope with in any way we can, because we can't stop it ... and maybe we shouldn't try - you think? Maybe those emotions are necessary for survival ... maybe we are required to experience a full range of emotions before we can function normally in society because thats just how the brain organ works?

I dunno ... makes sense to me now ... maybe not tomorrow!

HAHA!

Altering one's state of consciousness is one of the most basic human urges. Drug use is entirely normal - it's just that our society has arbitrarily decided that some forms of drug use are acceptable while others aren't.

We're not entertained enough by life to live without mind-altering substances. The bitter truth is that life ISN'T that entertaining... so we've just found ways to enhance it.

Actually I completely disagree with you lukeblue, but I can definitely understand why some people would feel the way you do.
It really all comes down to what you make of your situation.

You should look into the well known fact that opiates CAN reduce testosterone in men ... and besides a lack of sexual appetite (or not - it depends), lower testosterone can cause depression and ALL SORTS of problems, EVEN a low outlook on life. You would need to get tested by an endocrinologist to find out if you have that and to get treatment but ... it's worth it!

I guess I agree with this. But it all has to do with self-control most of the times. Like when I cannot afford drugs I don't do them, whereas somebody in the same socio/economic status as I may not have good self-control and begin to rob and steal to get a fix and end up being worseoff. I guess its all about the extent of any given problem.

Everyone has a vice--something that helps them cope, allows them to indulge their shadow nature or make sense of the world. Whether it's sex, gambling, drugs, food, work or exercise, too much of a good thing can be very, very bad. Religious fanatics are addicts in a sense, obsessing over religious texts and using concepts like heaven and hell to ease their fears about death. Fitness fanatics who are addicted to the "runner's high" and put their bodies under enormous stress by running 5 miles in -20 degree weather every morning are every bit as neurotic as those who take drugs to achieve a high.

So to answer your question about what sober people do to pass the time, I'd imagine they engage in some other vice, like pornography, masturbation, religious study, gambling, over-exercising, binge eating/anorexia, surfing the web, playing video games, working or cleaning excessively.

...but I don't know many people who truly abstain from all mind-altering substances (including caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, etc.)

im not normal unless I have x amount of opiates dancing on my receptors. I feel dead headed and uninterested in everything.

it is normal to seek novel states of mind, and this can be accomplished through a variety of ways

if normal is a statistic then drug use is normal, otherwise it's all subjective
