SSRIs and Cannabis

I was recently started on citalopram (Celexa 20mg daily) for depression and I've been told that smoking would affect the balance of the drug in my system. I'm really trying to work on my depression but I also really like smoking weed. So I want to be sure this isn't just another case of cannabis-related misinformation. Anyone here have relevant knowledge?

I have been on 10mg Celexa daily for close to a year and smoke pot daily. At first it seemed as if the pot was dulled but that went away in a couple weeks. They tell you you shouldn't be using ANY drugs, but smoking pot seemed to work out fine for me. I'd be careful with alcohol, if I drink too much I get very sick and feel depressed and miserable for a few days after (that seems to mess with the balance of the drug in my system at least).

For what it's worth, I'm on citalopram (currently 40mg's daily, but it's been as high as 60mg's) and I haven't noticed anything different when smoking weed.

regardless of contraindications between marijuana and SSRI's, i strongly recommend cutting back on pot if you're serious about dealing with depression.

this

and if you ever going up a dose on your SSRI, dont get really high. i have never freaked out on weed, but the day after i increased my prozac doses, i smoked some super danks, and i had a wicked panic attack and it was terrible.

was on lexapro for a short while (SSRIs are the devil), noticed no significant difference with weed. Regardless, my life is ten times better without that shitty drug around my dome piece.

Excellent advice. That's why I currently do not smoke.

I have smoked before on very low doses of Prozac and Zoloft (taken separately not together) and I was fine.

Whatever you do, do not binge drink on alcohol or start drinking daily in moderate and large amounts while on an SSRI as this will make the SSRI stop working.

LSD worked fine for me while on prozac. I have never taken MDMA/MDA but my ex did take MDMA while on prozac and he was able to roll fine.

From my seriously one sided opinions and experiences, I think when you are on SSRIs you need weed the most. I'm not sure what was worse, clinical depression or dealing with Lexapro and cold turkey dropping. Weed saved my sanity back then.

Hopefully you won't have a similar experience with your SSRI, though. I know they react dramatically different for each person, and I've heard lexapro is one of the worst of them, but if it works for you, you're probably the best one to gauge how often to smoke, not us. It is safe, though, or as safe as weed ever is.

I agree with others here. Have smoked up on SSRIs without issue. I found it helped me cope just having a bit every few days. Had some issues on Venlafaxine (SNRI) though...

Couldn't agree more about cutting back in relation to depression though. Helped me a lot.
