Brittany Murphy Death Could be Tied to Drug Overdose

Actress Brittany Murphy, 32,who was looking forward to the upcoming year and talked only weeks ago about her desire to have a baby, was found dead in her Los Angeles home today (Dec. 20) of apparent cardiac arrest. Police are investigating what could be another Hollywood drug overdose.

Although no details have been released and an autopsy has yet to be conducted, the death looks suspiciously drug-related. If so, she would be added to a growing list of celebrities who have died from drug overdoses.

That list includes most famously Michael Jackson, Health Ledger, Anna Nicole Smith, and DJ Adam Goldstein. In all cases the drugs responsible were prescribed by a doctor.

Prescription drug abuse has long been a problem in Hollywood. Celebrities have no problem finding doctors willing to prescribe – and in some cases overprescribe – dangerous sedatives and painkillers.

Murphy was not known to have any health problems that would spark a cardiac arrest. A Cedars-Sinai Medical Center spokeswoman said Murphy was dead on arrival at 10:04 a.m. Sunday (Dec 20).

At 8 am this morning, LA paramedics responded to a call from at a home in the 1800 block of Rising Glen Road owned by British screenwriter Simon Monjack, who is married to Murphy.

Murphy’s career has been in eclipse for the past few years, although she had found steady work as the voice of animated characters in of Fox’s “King of the Hill” and Gloria the penguin in “Happy Feet.”

Brittany spoke with Access.com at a Los Angeles party on Dec. 3, and talked excitedly about the coming year.

“As far as having a New Year’s resolution, I’d love to have a child next year,” she said at the time. “But that’s kind of a large one!” according to the Web site.

The actress also spoke in glowing terms about her family. “I’ve been very blessed to have a really great loving husband,” she said. “I spend more time with my family than anyone else in the world”

She will appear in Sylvester Stallone’s new film, “The Expendables,” set for release next year.

Murphy landed her first job in Hollywood when she was 14, starring as Brenda Drexell in the series “Drexell’s Class.” She then went on to play Molly Morgan in the short-lived “The Torkelsons” spinoff “Almost Home.’

Her breakout roles include parts in 1999’s “Girl, Interrupted,” with Winona Ryder, Angelina Jolie, and Clea DuVall, “Clueless” (1995) and “8 Mile,” an autobiographical movie about rapper Eminem, for which she won critical acclaim.

She also starred in the critically acclaimed Sin City (2005), and this year she was cast in the Lifetime TV movie, “Tribute,” as the main character, Cilla.

She also once dated Ashton Kutcher, with whom she co-starred in 2003’s romantic comedy “Just Married.”

Kutcher tweeted Sunday morning: “2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon.”

Murphy credited her mother for much of her success.

“When I asked my mom to move to California, she sold everything and moved out here for me,” Murphy told the AP in 2003. “I was really grateful to have grown up in an environment that was conducive to creating and didn’t stifle any of that. She always believed in me.”

Although no details have been released and an autopsy has yet to be conducted
I was about to stop reading.

the death looks suspiciously drug-related
but this kept me going. and whats funny is the article does not show a damn thing to back that up. it just talks about other celebrities' drug problems, and brittany murphy's career.

article should be titled "A Highlight of Brittany Murphy's Career"

Journalism at its worst.

There's absolutely nothing at this time to suggest it is a drug OD. This article shouldn't exist. At least not yet.

Im going to predict that it was drug-related death... if looking at statistics then i would presume it was prescription drugs - opiates/benzos... Maybe coke - i dunno for some reason when i look at Brittany Murphey i think 'coke-head' ... lol dont ask why

she is very pale looking in all her movies ... almost pasty looking...

the husband previously has been hospitalised before for drugs ...

Her husband is trying to stop the autopsy !!!

Why would he do that ?? wouldn't he want to know what killed his wife ??

Unless of course he was the one who supplied her with the drugs which means he is looking at jail time.

Brittany's death: Drugs? Anorexia? Diabetes?

Not all happy families: Brittany with husband Simon

Reports suggest there is something dodgy about Brittany Murphy's sudden death yesterday - with everything from drugs to anorexia to her 'cuddly' husband under suspicion.

Despite the Los Angeles County coroner's office saying her untimely death appeared to be from natural causes, let's have a look at the rumours as they unfold:

Her husband?

While paramedics were trying to revive Brittany outside her house on Sunday morning, her husband Simon Monjack was spotted 'staggering around' the area.

"I saw five firemen bringing down the gurney and take her down to the firetruck, trying to resuscitate her by the fire truck," witness Clare Staples told RadarOnline.com.

"She had tubes down her throat … I think she was dead already."

She said Simon was "wandering around in his pyjama bottoms with no shoes on".

"He wasn’t even near the gurney, he was just staggering around.

Simon has also bizarrely insisted that no autopsy be performed on his wife - a request the Los Angeles coroner ignored.

Diabetes?

TMZ report that Brittany's mother informed paramedics that her daughter had a history of diabetes.

Weird behaviour?

There have been suggestions that Brittany has been thin on the high-profile movie roles lately due to 'erratic' behaviour.

Brittany's last mega role was Sin City, and a title voice role in Disney's upcoming Tinkerbell was allegedly scrapped due to her strange antics.

The Sun report that she was sacked from latest film The Caller after her "difficult behaviour" ticked off the film's crew - even hubby Simon reportedly got in a fight with locals during the shoot in Puerto Rico.

Death predictions?

Perez Hilton predicted Brittany's death in a radio interview earlier this month - creepy!

When host AJ Machado asked Perez if there was another celebrity headed for the same fate as Michael Jackson, Perez reportedly said, "Brittany Murphy maybe."

Perez has since blogged a warning to Lindsay Lohan and Courtney Love to straighten out their act so they won't be next - let's hope he's not right next time!

Drugs?

Brittany's gaunt, tired appearance of late had sparked speculation about her lifestyle - and Brittany has been the target of drug rumours from as early as 2005.

Speaking out about her rumoured cocaine use, she had said: "Just for the record I have never tried it in my entire life, I've never even seen it, and I don't leave the house too much, except to go to work."

"My worst vice is caffeine ... [the rumour is] really pretty darn far-fetched. I have known people over the course of my life that have bad problems with drugs, and it's something really serious."

Ill? Brittany in 2006, and her last public appearance this month (right)

The Sun quote a friend as saying they believed she was killed by prescription drugs (including Vicodin, a drug that Michael Jackson was known to abuse) after getting hooked on pills following a cosmetic surgery procedure.

"We have been very worried something like this was about to happen," the friend was quoted as saying.

"Brittany has been living life on the edge. She definitely had a drug problem and we have all begged her to seek help. Sadly our words fell on deaf ears."

Anorexia?

Brittany has been on the super-lean side for years now, and her death-by-cardiac-arrest has many people blaming anorexia for her sudden death.

"I'm the same size I was in Clueless," Brittany has said in regards to her tiny frame.

"It's just that the weight in your face changes as you grow and get older... I used to feel embarrassed about being too tiny."

"It made me really self-conscious — then I came to terms with it.

"This is my body; I'm proud of it, so who cares? Now I've stopped trying to eat 12 eggs for breakfast.

"I'm healthy, which is the most important thing."

Brittany had said that 2010 was the year she had planned to try for a baby with her husband.

Murphy 'was extremely ill' before death
Brittany Murphy was reportedly vomiting and extremely ill in the hours before she died of a cardiac arrest.

PHOTOS: Life and times of Brittany Murphy

The entertainment website TMZ claims the 32-year-old actress was taking prescription medication in the lead up to her death.

The drugs may have contributed to Murphy's heart attack but it was too early to say, unnamed sources told the website.

A large number of prescriptions made out to Murphy, her husband Simon Monjack and her mother Sharon Murphy were found in her house, the site reports, quoting law enforcement sources.

After falling ill earlier in the day, Murphy reportedly collapsed in the bathroom and ended up in the shower area where her mother found her surrounded by vomit.

UK tabloid The Sun reports Murphy was taking Vicodin, a drug the late Michael Jackson was known to have been hooked on.

Murphy, who starred in Clueless and 8 Mile, had become addicted to painkillers after undergoing several plastic surgery procedures, The Sun claims.

The revelations come as a neighbour told how she saw Murphy's husband Simon Monjack "staggering" around a different part of the property as paramedics tried to save her life.

Clare Staples told RadarOnline.com she watched the dramatic scene unfold at Murphy's house after she noticed two fire trucks and paramedics outside.

"I saw five firemen bringing down the gurney and take her down to the firetruck, trying to resuscitate her by the fire truck," she said.

"She had tubes down her throat … I think she was dead already."

Murphy's husband Simon Monjack, who has reportedly attempted to block an autopsy on the late 32-year-old actress, was seen "wandering around in his pyjama bottoms with no shoes on".

"He wasn’t even near the gurney, he was just staggering around," Ms Staples said.

Although the Los Angeles County coroner's office says it appears actress Brittany Murphy died of natural causes, speculation has raged in the media over the cause of her death.

TMZ reported that Monjack had attempted to block a forensic examination of the actress's body but added that the Los Angeles coroner will go ahead with the procedure.

The site also claims Murphy's mother has told paramedics her daughter suffered from diabetes.

Murphy was photographed looking underweight at an LA premiere earlier this month, with her prominent collarbones and sunken eyes prompting speculation about her lifestyle.

Examiner.com reports her troubles began around three years ago when her spate of high-profile roles slowed after her final starring role in Sin City.

Acting jobs she had been slated for — such as the voice of Tinkerbell in a proposed Disney production — were withdrawn, allegedly due to her erratic behaviour.

Murphy died at 10.04am on Sunday in LA (3am AEDT), Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre Spokeswoman Sally Stewart said.

She would not provide a cause of death, or any other information.

Hollywood gossip tsar Perez Hilton predicted Murphy's death earlier this month during an interview on a San Diego radio show, according to NBC.

Radio host AJ Machado reportedly asked Perez if there was another celebrity heading the same way as Michael Jackson.

"Brittany Murphy maybe," Hilton said.

After Murphy's death Perez tweeted "Drugs Kill" and then warned celebrities Lindsay Lohan and Courtney Love that unless they went to rehab, they would be next.

According to a report in the UK Times, Murphy had been the subject of controversy when in 2005 she fought off rumours that she regularly took cocaine.

"Just for the record I have never tried it in my entire life, I've never even seen it, and I don't leave the house too much, except to go to work," she told Knight Ridder Newspapers.

"My worst vice is caffeine ... [the rumour is] really pretty darn far-fetched I have known people over the course of my life that have bad problems with drugs, and it's something really serious."

Three years ago, Murphy told an American health magazine that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer but had the cancerous lumps removed and was given a clean bill of health.

In recent interviews, she had said 2010 was the year she and her husband British screenwriter Simon Monjack hoped to start a family.

Brittany Murphy's husband Simon Monjack pictured just hours after her death

The astonishing array of 'strong' prescription drugs found in Brittany Murphy's bedroom was revealed today as her husband faced questions over her death.

An officer from the Los Angeles County Coroner's department investigating the 32-year-old star's death found the medication on her bedside table.

The drugs were made out to Miss Murphy with other bottles, some empty, also made out to her mother Sharon Murphy, husband Simon Monjack and some unidentified individuals.

According to the investigator's notes, the medications included: Topamax (anti-seizure medication also to prevent migraines), Methylprednisolone (anti-inflammatory), Fluoxetine (depression), Klonopin (anxiety), Carbamazepine (treats Diabetic symptoms and is also a bipolar medication), Ativan (anxiety), Vicoprofen (pain reliever), Propranolol (hypertension, used to prevent heart attacks), Biaxin (antibiotic), Hydrocodone (pain) and various vitamins.

Celebrity news website TMZ claims the investigator, called Blacklock, said: 'No alcohol containers, paraphernalia or illegal drugs were discovered.'

Blacklock added: 'The night prior to her death, the decedent had consumed some noodles, leftover Thai food, Gatorade, water and tea with lemon.'

The notes also say Brittany had a history of hypoglycemia and was hospitalized in April 2009 for low blood sugar while on location in Oregon.

Investigator Blacklock said Mr Monjack, 39, and her mother made a frantic attempt to revive the star, who had collapsed in the bathroom, before paramedics arrived.

The actress 'had been complaining of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pain' for 7 to 10 days prior to her death.' According to the notes, Miss Murphy went into the bathroom at around 7:30am on Sunday and shut the door.

Thirty minutes later Brittany's mother Sharon went to check on her daughter, opened the bathroom door and 'discovered the decedent lying on the floor unresponsive.' According to the notes, Sharon yelled for help. Brittany's husband, who was in bed, heard the screams and ran to the bathroom.

Sharon called 911 and Mr Monjack 'attempted to revive the decedent by placing her in the shower and running the water.'

The notes continue: 'The decedent remained unresponsive and purged her stomach contents prior to the arrival of the paramedics.'

When the paramedics arrived, Brittany was 'without signs of life.'

It is expected Mr Monjack will be questioned over his wife's death. He is one of several people who will be interviewed by the authorities about Miss Murphy's final hours.

Mr Monjack told the investigator during the 7 to 10 days prior to her death, Miss Murphy complained of shortness of breath and severe abdominal pains but he was not overly alarmed because 'she often suffered from severe menstrual pains.'

Investigator Blacklock spoke with police at the scene, who told him 'foul play is not suspected.'

Last night screenwriter Monjack, 39, said his world had been destroyed by the death of his wife.

Speaking for the first time since the actress died on Sunday, he told Access Hollywood – a celebrity TV show and website – that the day she collapsed in her bathroom had been just a ‘regular day’.

‘Sharon (her mother) went into the bathroom because she had been in there a long time. Her mom screamed for me and I ran. Then called 911,' he said.

‘My world was destroyed yesterday.'

Miss Murphy had been ill in the days leading up to her death and had seen a doctor, confirmed Mr Monjack.

‘She had laryngitis. She had been tired at the end of the year. She had made a couple movies,’ he said. He hit out at suggestions that his presence in her life had had a negative impact.

‘I don’t know why anyone would think that,' he said.

‘She found love. We found love. Brittany didn’t get to where Brittany was with anyone controlling her. Brittany was Brittany.’

Mr Monjack, who is from North London, said he had been touched by the messages of support he had received since his wife’s death.

Adding that he was particularly moved by her ex boyfriend Ashton Kutcher’s tribute posted on Twitter, which read: ‘2day the world lost a little piece of sunshine. My deepest condolences go out 2 Brittany’s family, her husband, & her amazing mother Sharon. see you on the other side kid.’

Mr Monjack said: ‘I loved what Ashton wrote on Twitter. It was comforting to me. I couldn’t have said it better.’

Speculation is mounting that anorexia may have played a role in Miss Murphy's death.

The U.S. star, who is thought to have suffered a heart attack, was pictured looking painfully thin just two-and-a-half weeks ago at a fashion event in Los Angeles.

She even admitted at the time that she was a little concerned about her weight.

She reportedly told FOX News: 'I am a bit thinner now than I would like to be'.

Some guests at the Tt Collection Pop-Up Party claimed she also appeared 'unsteady on her feet'.

Yesterday LA chief coroner Ed Winter, who investigated Michael Jackson's death, insisted that Miss Murphy's death was not caused by drugs as her autopsy was concluded.

But the results of the test were deferred pending toxicology and neurological results, which could take up to six weeks.

She was found unconscious at 8am on Sunday in the shower by her mother at the home she shares with Mr Monjack.

Police called to her Los Angeles home found numerous prescriptions for drugs including, it is alleged, Vicodin - the same drug Michael Jackson was hooked on.

One report claimed Miss Murphy was struggling to kick her addiction, which started after she underwent a series of plastic surgery operations.

Yesterday, a coroner's spokesman confirmed that prescription medication had been discovered at Miss Murphy's home.

He insisted foul play was not suspected and that the actress's death at 8am on Sunday 'appears to be natural'.

However, one police source told the celebrity website TMZ: 'There were a lot - a lot - of prescriptions in the house.'

A friend of Miss Murphy - best known for her roles in 8 Mile with rapper Eminem and Girl, Interrupted - said last night: 'Brittany has been living life on the edge. She definitely had a drug problem and we have all begged her to get help.

'A lot of Brittany's problems were due to poor self image. She wore extraordinary amounts of make-up, tons of fake eyelashes, got her teeth capped, dyed her hair blonde, lost weight - she wanted to be a beauty.'

Actress Kathy Najimy, who worked with her on the cartoon series King Of The Hill, paid tribute to her co-star yesterday as 'the sweetest, most talented angel' but added 'she got hooked up with wrong people'.

In recent years, Miss Murphy has earned a reputation as being notoriously difficult to work with.

She was reportedly fired from the thriller The Caller, which she had been shooting in Puerto Rico until late last month, and was also recently replaced on Disney's animated Tinkerbell film.

A source told People magazine how, on the set of one unnamed film a few years ago, Miss Murphy appeared 'unfocused and never knew her lines'.

'She wouldn't do the same take, the same way, twice,' the source said. 'There were accusations of drug use. She said they weren't true. Brittany said, "Everyone was saying I'm doing drugs and I'm not".'

An insider on her recent indie thriller Something Wicked said she 'was barely there. She'd go in and out of consciousness in the middle of takes'.

Meanwhile, the Mail can reveal that Miss Murphy's friends had concerns over her husband - whom she married after a whirlwind four-month courtship in 2007 - and how he is entangled in a series of debts.

The Hollywood Reporter newspaper claimed that a 2006 court judgment for £293,000 was made against Mr Monjack, who was formerly married to GMTV therapist Simone Bienne, by Coutts bank.

It alleged that a year before the court ruling Mr Monjack was evicted from his New York flat for failure to pay £5,000 in rent. The paper said there was a similar incident in 1997 in Los Angeles.

Other American media have claimed that Mr Monjack was arrested by customs agents in April 2007 after overstaying his U.S. work visa.

They speculated his marriage - a month later - was a way of overcoming his visa problems.

U.S. website Gawker has also claimed that Mr Monjack has two outstanding warrants for his arrest in Virginia for alleged credit card theft and fraud.

Mr Monjack said: 'Like all businessmen, I have faced many lawsuits. It is a real tragedy that success, greed, envy and celebrity are the motivation for attacking my family and character.'

From the combo of drugs in the last posted article, an OD seems kind of unlikely (although not impossible, it would take a lot of benzos and hydrocodone to make someone with a tolerance OD IMHO). I'm thinking it was probably a combo of drugs and diabetes....maybe? Or maybe she was taking more drugs than what she was scripted (most likely).

It's still sad. 2009, the year of prescription drug overdoses and mistresses.

since when is it bizarre to not want the body of your wife to be cut into little pieces???

yeah it's what a guilty person would say, but wtf??? Who WOULDN'T say that moments after their mysteriously super attractive wife passed?

And what? No OC's even to add to that list? That's a pretty thin list of suspects.. if she was supposedly abusing the stuff, it would be pretty damn hard to accidentally OD off benzos and hydros with a tolerance wouldn't it?

Police called to her Los Angeles home found numerous prescriptions for drugs including, it is alleged, Vicodin - the same drug Michael Jackson was hooked on.

And fuck the muckraking doushbag that wrote this, like petty vicodin was what did him in!

That guy got Brittany Murphy? Wow. There's hope for fatties. At least he pops his collars, perhaps it was his fashion sense that won her over.
