Older couples are buying each other suicide kits as Christmas presents, says controversial euthanasia campaigner Dr Philip Nitschke.

Speaking at Tweed Heads in New South Wales yesterday on a new "peaceful pill" suicide method being developed overseas, Dr Nitschke's comments sent right-to-life campaigners and church groups into a frenzy, The Courier Mail reports.

"There are people here in this room who I know have bought that (euthanasia medication) for their loved ones as Christmas presents."

I would like to have one of those pills just in case I get some horrible incurable cancer or something of the like....

The idea of being forcefully compelled to continue living out the course of your natural life despite agonizing pain and a personal wish to be able to end your life, is frankly absurd.

That being said, if someone tried to give me suicide pills for a christmas present I would assume they were quite insane. :D
 
I wouldn't even say they had to be in horrible pain or have a fatal illness. They're not getting any younger, they know what's coming.

If an old married couple decide to end it on their terms, together and dying, I presume, in a pleasant way then why shouldn't they be allowed to do so?
 
yeah? anyone know what these suicide pills are?

I'd definitely rather go out on my own terms than slowly losing my mind and bodily functions.
 
I think having "suicide pills" around is a horrible idea. Imagine if these older people have little bastard grandkids that steal thier meds to get high, some 16 year old kid poppin grandpas suicide pill on accident. Wicked shit.

I don't think suicide pills will be medicine cabinet stuff. You only need one dose, so maybe a single prescription following psychoanalysis. Medicine cabinets are already filled with things little Timmy could OD on, regardless.
 
maybe it's just me, but if i ever felt the need to suicide, i'd do it by taking an incredible dope shot. go out in an overwhelming euphoria nod, out with a bang!

I think the suicide pill is a bit weird and at first I might have thought it was wrong but it just scares me, this just seems so extreme but everyone is right, if a couple want to go out together when theyre too old to be doing anything with their lives at all then noone should be allowed to stop them.

In regards to children getting the pills, if it becomes legal here I highly doubt they will get to take the pill home, id say it would be given to the person either in their nursinghome by a doctor or get someone to come into their house to give it to them, I doubt theyd ignore the dangers of a child getting ahold of a pill, theres a difference between a kid eating an oxy than a kid eating a suicide pill.

P.s kids die from eating other peoples meds all the time, theres a massive poster at my methadone clinic saying "methadone kills kids"...I wonder why thats up? Obviously a lot of kids die from getting aholdof mummy or daddies medicide.

Anyway back on track, I think when I get older I want to die with my partner, I think that would be the perfect way rather than wait to die painfuly like have a stroke or heart attack or something. The more that I think about it the more I think its perfectly fine to use these pills.
 
oh for fuck's sake just give them valium or dope for some good times and they can OD if they don't like it.
 
Probably pentobarbital or something similar ( oldschool downers, afaik the traditional suicide drug is pentobarb ). My inner drug addict wants one if i knew the dose, just seperate the powder into normal sedating doses.
 
I wonder what the legal implications of possession of the medicine without a prescription are.
 
Yer the take one only suicide pill that comes to mind is Sodium Cyanide which all Hitlers comrades took b4 they were executed.

A well known suidice clinin in Switzeland used Nembutal elixer, which was available in the USA in pill form til 2004,~30 would do it. Now Seconals back on the shelves thats lethal~50 pills less with booze.

This idea of suicide when youu find out you have some terminal illness has always upset me. Hey when your terminal in medicines eyes it's a green light to bring on the full force of pharmaceutical arsenal. whether i was actually in pain or not i wouldn't top myself, i'd be hitting up the Docs (and getting) all the damn IV Dilaudid HP, Oxymorphone (Diamorphone, if in England) benzos stimulants, and anything else that have me on cloud 9 for the rest of my days.
