IN, Bloomington - 11.05.09 Thursday - Bassnectar at Bluebird Nightclub *REVIEW*

I wouldn't mind going if it wasn't $22. It was a lot cheaper down south for some reason. :\

well...i couldn't go see crystal castles/boys noize/chromeo this past friday in chi and i can't go see modeselektor/basement jaxx/mstrkrft this coming friday at the same venue. both of those shows were $35 and worth every damn penny. so...i can go still go see someone worth seeing, stick close to home plus tap a neglected demographic by passing out juxt flyers for the weekly and the evol intent show. imo the $22 is worth it regardless if it was cheaper elsewhere ;)

I work until 8 then at 7:30 am next morning or your ride would be set G. :!

i lived in bloomington for three years so i know what goes down...but i never thought for one second the dj talent could hold a candle to what indy has.

That's because a vast majority of the kids in Bloomington graduate and move somewhere else, like any college town. Indy isn't a college town. The DJs here in Indy that they can't hold a candle to have been around a long time. Some of them are even twice their age.

Some DJs there manage to pull it off and stick around. Action Jackson and Phenom, for instance, but even they spend a lot of time in Indy. DJs like Ashley Ross, Flufftronix, Colin B, Miles Maeda, ... they all moved on, along with the rest of their class.

;)

fair enough. but I wasnt responding to a concise explanation, either...

riiiiight...seeya at toys'r'us, kid.
lol, you just dismissed one of the cats holding down dance music in btown and indy, but you'd categorize his taste in dance music as pedestrian too, which is funny bc jackson's linked up w/ scion and iheartcomix.

Patrick,

Aight man your dismissive, condescending attitude is one of the main reasons why major tours/shows/agencies, etc... skip over this city. I don't want or need this to turn into a pissing contest but just understand that I know what I'm talking about. I'm very fortunate to be able to do this as a living and trust, I CARE about what I'm doing. I have almost zero interest in drum and bass or even dubstep for that matter but you know what, I APPRECIATE it. I appreciate anyone trying to push things forward, I appreciate all forms of dance music, and most importantly I appreciate anyone trying to provide a venue for any of that in the city I call home. That's the difference between me and you.

Cool you lived in Bloomington for 3 years, congratulations, what exactly were you looking for. It's not NY or LA and never will be, that said, look at the acts they/we have brought in to Bloomington the last year or two, Girl Talk, Franki, Floss, Bassnectar, Toxic, dj assault, Neon Indian, etc etc etc... As Geek said CURRENTLY RELEVANT artists not relects of the dance culture of the 90s.

Get the fucking chip off your shoulder and have fun.

And yes you can call me a toy or whatever you prefer, but me playing Lady Gaga on a Monday at Kilroys allows me to play Afrojack or whatever else I feel like on Wednesday.

Hope this doesn't come off like I'm on a soapbox. Continue to be salty and hate while I enjoy myself.

G'night

dear action jackson

well...what was happening was an open dialogue that wasn't bitter at all. just because some of it was argumentative doesn't mean it was for the sake of arguing or a pissing contest for that matter. i find it amusing that it took you to actually register on Bluelight to stick up for geek's pov...there are people perusing this forum and most likely this thread with creds like yours or better, but i don't see them standing up for geek nor entertaining anything to the contrary.

why?

because it's the same damn thing week in, week out on bluelight. if you think for one second big shows skip over indy because of attitudes like mine, per se, then you obviously don't know me or have a clue what you're doing here in this forum in the first place. i also don't even think you realized how preposterous that sounds...and just by reading that, and by never meeting me in person EVER, i guess i must have a chip on my shoulder? nice reasoning...you mistake a sincere interest in the topic at hand for something quite the opposite.

not once did i discredit you or slander YOU, action jackson, nor your contemporaries by name. my beef was with bloomington v indy and vice versa. perhaps if you cared to entertain my opinions in person you would get the gist. congrats to you for getting your shit done but again...i never knocked any of it. i just knocked you, as a n00b to the forum, coming in like we're supposed to be in awe of you and your opinion. you got creds? i respect that...but it doesn't mean i have to agree with you or geek's opinion nor anybody else's for that matter. welcome to bluelight...i hope you stick around :)

ps: i just want to touch on one thing you said...

I CARE about what I'm doing. I have almost zero interest in drum and bass or even dubstep for that matter but you know what, I APPRECIATE it. I appreciate anyone trying to push things forward, I appreciate all forms of dance music, and most importantly I appreciate anyone trying to provide a venue for any of that in the city I call home. i guarantee you that you ask ANYBODY that knows me if i share the same passion you do...they're going to tell you what you probably don't realize is that i'm more like you than you realize, holmes...

trust.

I don't understand this perception that people are skipping over Indianapolis.

Can someone explain this to me, or provide some details on that one?

Because I don't believe it's true. The onus is on the promoters to bring the talent to the city.

We could've had Girl Talk here, if we wanted. We could have many of the names mentioned in this thread.

We have to want them, and assume the risk. That's where we fall short. In both assuming the risk and the WE.

matt...you're cool as a fan, brother :) i'm glad you're in the loop and making things happen. indy needs more open-minded promoters like you.

agents ACTIVELY try to get relevant talent into Bloomington. they look for venues and promoters to host shows in Bloomington w/out anyone making an offer to them. they do not bother doing that w/ Indy for relevant dance music acts. Yes, you as a promoter could get talent here by reaching out to an agent and making an offer. However, w/out your initiative, that agent wouldnt have even bothered trying to get the artist booked in Indy as they would have w/ Bloomington.

i take personal offense to this notion of not assuming the risk. please go review every event i've thrown at http://iqentertainment.net ... i've assumed enough risk.

the WE does exist. it's just not you or the rest of the 90s rave music promoters. i was at a rave w/ 300 ppl on saturday in Indy (and the kids were dancing, so you know it wasn't any of Therapy's former attendees). the djs rocked mashups, hip-hop, bmore, and other currently relevant music.
