This might seem like a corny thread, but was thinking about how some people have a more intense connection to music than others (most of the time, its more than they would let on, or others can even fathom). I figured that some have a special affinity for music.

Can anyone answer yes to all of these?

Are you...

never caught without your music player, which you have plenty of from years past

unable to understand why some people drive without any music on

Able to play several instruments as well as learn by ear

Do you...

Like depressing or melancholy songs because they are just so amazing in their own right to affect you.

Get melodies, songs, or guitar solos stuck in your head that seem to somehow interrupt your train of thought.

Get so moved by music even without the use of recreational drugs

Listen to music to soothe yourself from a rough day

Visualize whole scenes, events, or visuals along with music. sometimes as if part of a feature film

Get perplexed yet so intrigued when you hear a piece of music that you can't put a label on

I can relate to all of these except that recently the radio in my car died so I have to listen to my headphones, which is a little obnoxious, so I go without music while driving a lot of the time. The silent driving thing is nice because it allows you to listen to other things that are going on and you can ponder stuff, also I like to sing or play djembe while driving. Occasionally I will play my acoustic guitar or harmonica.
I have just recently found a few people at my college who also are like this about music, we met in jazz band, and they are some of the best friends/coolest people I know.
Sometimes I can definitely relate to the melodies and the rhythm. Rhythm is what gets me. Whenever I hear crazy syncopated melodies I get all giddy inside with delight.
And yes labeling is a very perplexing and largely pointless thing except if its used consciously trying to describe a piece of music through comparisons with other songs. But I don't let the label hold any more weight than just as a temporary descriptor.

i can also relate to what you mean. ive played a few different instruments in my life and love to just sit down and improvise riffs and solos to any time of music, even rap and techno =) but mostly blues, it probably dont sound good to anyone but me but oh well its fun. I have never played in a band but have played guitar for about 7 years, i cant stand the thought of sitting down and learning a song, i have to just jam to it and learn by ear....and to connecting with music without drugs i can also relate too, i love to go to music festivals, also like psychedelics, but even without them, i have just as much fun. Whenever i hear good music it gives me goosebumps, always has ever since i started guitar, i love it, i dont know why. Now if i could find some way to make money at it...

^Put yourself out there dude. That's the only way. Craigslist and myspace and facebook and youtube plus if you know html you could make your own site. Just put whatever sounds good to you and someone somewhere will dig it.
I know what you mean when it comes to learning songs. I definitely prefer to jam along and just really explore the groove by ear. That's the best way to talk the language of music. Widdling your fingers along the neck just because that's how a famous guitarist played 20 years ago seems unnatural to me.

If I have company I don't play music, unless it's a road trip then banging beats of course
Able to play several instruments as well as learn by ear
I don't think i can do this, but never tried

Quite regularly, interupts meetings sometimes ahah

Very much so. The DJ set from last night is an example.

Listen to music to soothe yourself from a rough day
This is especially true for me. If i feel crap, close my door, put on some music i know and love, ranging from Ludacris - Word of Mouth, Infected Mushroom - Converting Vegatarians.. as long as I know it. And just fucking jam the fuck out. This is what I love about music the most

YES!!!!!!! omg YES. often imagine the film clips being me walking along with my headphones shot as a POV clip.

Yup, get confused, and then normally decide on a clashing of genre's :)

Music is my life. So i wonder why I'm doing a phD in physics :/

I adore music, it stimulates me soo much it's unreal, but I don't like listening to music much while driving it distracts me too much & I can't appreciate it, plus I never walk around with an ipod or anything like that. And yeah emotion in songs can really lift or depress me depending on what type it is. Different music for different moods though, listening to less rock & getting back into dance atm =D.

Music for me needs to be listened to as the main activity or when cleaning my room, browsing the web or partying. I have to constantly taps my legs when I listen to music while browsing, I must be one of the only people to build up a sweat from browsing the net lol. I suck at playing instruments though, & I doubt I pick up on the little details that would enable me to play guitar without tabs etc, no chance.

I hate defining music into specific genres it pisses me off, don't see much point in the millions of sub genres & yeah I like visualizing stuff while listening but I don't think that's anything different I would guess most people do this. I love playing tracks that I've heard live at a gig or at a moment in time which I really enjoyed in life & bringing back those great memory's & feelings.

I like it when people really are into a song. Like the song penetrates you so deeply it just makes you feel so good. I usually get this way with certain Wood Brothers songs or other folky people due to their lyrics about life, but sometimes I feel very connected with instrumental works.

am i a right brainer if im a lefty?

Im a lefty anyway and another music junkie, Degree is in sound and music production and basically my music is about the most tangible thing in my life i care about, I'm always being told that the only time i really start to become animated is when I'm discussing and relating music.

It's more complex than this though, and blatantly music is fucking cool, and chixdiggit and stuff so if youre a lefty and someone tells you "ahh no way doesnt that make you good at music?" then im sure most folk would say 'fuck yea, im SO into it cuz you know i was designed to ROCK!'....If being a right brainer made you far more likely to be a nonce I doubt there'd be such a culture of lefty's proclaiming their taste for such pursuits.;)

I actually think of all the creative arts music is the most formulaic by far, at least rhythmically and melodically....

Theres a fair process of tonal 'colouring' that is beyond my reasoning of computation so that it appears almost abstract....

oh yeah my answers.....

Are you...

Always have my tunes, all my old shit gets wrecked so dont hsve much of a museum, unless youre referring to my music collection, which is ample!

Depends how shit a driver I was at the time and how hectic the road was.

Oh fuck, I wanted to put a fairly important P.S to my post.....will be interested to know how others feel about this...

As yuo'll have noted music is a masssssive part of my life, but but but but, for about 4 years, the music died man! the music died.

I didntwrite a single riff, i didnt sequence as single phrase didnt compose arrange prgram record perform a note! Had no inspiration and no motivation, in fact I barely even listened to music, I fuc,ing turned my back on the noise......

Fortunately I am climbing back, listening to music constantly again, jumping around tunes as the play exploring their textures and landscapes and sneakily note taking, putting a stufdio (of sorts) back ogether and locking myaelf away in the lab has never seemed so exciting. It's honestly one of the best feelings in the world.

Not sure if it was worth those years of losing the music though. It was dark. Not cool evil, black sabbath/venetian snares dark, but like just 7pm november evening dark. no fucking fun.

i think i qualify :)
if i don't have access to good music for a whole day i'll become irritable; my addiction to music is definitely stronger than my addiction to tobacco.
if i have the time i spend many hours a day on creating tunes with logic.

same here, just swap the phD in physics with m.sc. in biochem.

The only reason I continue to study is so I have enough spare time to spend on music. Motivation, but not the best one.

I listened to them so much it gave me perpetual ear ringing! Can't use them anymore for this reason.

Well, it can distract you quite a bit. I always play music, but I can understand why others wouldn't.

I can't play any instruments.

Melancholic songs don't depress anyone IMO, or people wouldn't be listening to them. The word that applies here is melancholic. Sad songs can get me very melancholic, a feeling I just barely prefer over the usual uppity/dancy feeling other songs give you. Music when done right can provoke powerful emotions, I don't understand people who say that techno (meaning electronic music) doesn't have emotion. Are they fucking deaf or what?

When I go to a party that I know will have good music I don't even bother taking any drugs. When I'm on them though, I NEED MUSIC.

Yeah, It really bums me when I don't have any access to music for a while, due to my PC being out of order or something like similar.
According to my Last.fm stats I listen to about 2.5 hours of music a day on average, since early 2006.

Yeah, I did this alot when I was 15-16. I kinda stopped doing that for some reason. Or maybe it just happens subconsciously now, I'm not entirely sure. =D

Usually I'll think 'what is this madness?' yet for some reason keep dling sets of it, and get addicted. Remember thinking 'this sucks' when dubstep came out? ;)

i'm an addict, compelled by a deep instinct to seek tunes. my heart feels happiest keeping time. gotta hear it, gotta feel it. i love how instruments talk, always wondering what they're saying just for the words even though the momentum of the music betrays its meaning anyway. it's an intimacy that transcends the kind of intimacy you get with other humans, and yet it would be nothing but the scattered syncopations of nature if humans didn't invest in it and lift it up and bang it out loud inspiring sparks of life in even the most base motherfuckers

I love music, I've answered Yes to all the questions except the part about playing instruments, can't really play anything.

I love music, good music that evokes emotion can truly take you to other places. I love listening to music while going to/from class. Even if it's raining and/or I am in a really bad mood, some good tunes make me forget about where I am, my problems and other BS. I'll just visualize that I am somewhere else listening to this awesome music.

Melancholic songs can have a lot of impact when done right, they can actually cheer me up sometimes because they remind that melancholy is what makes happiness so much better.
