Snakes in Australia

^ When I went diving up at the Reef when I was a teenager, I was more scared of Sea Snakes than any of the sharks I could imagine. Crazy venomous.

^^ Hell yes!!! I would imagine they would swim really damn fast too?? I must admit I'm a bit scaredy of them!

Bush ticks and paralysis ticks are the same thing - different life stages. They're all Ixodes holocyclus.

Hmmm while I appreciate your knowledge in the area, I'm aware of several other species on the East Coast that aren't holocyclus. Being a vet nurse, one has to be aware of the subtle differences in body shape and colour of different species and male/female, larva/adult, etc :)
Having said that though, the ticks I found on me I couldn't 100% tell the specific species because they were small (like you said, not yet engorged because I felt them and removed them).

Ewwwwww TICKS!!!! *shudders* :|

In New Caledonia (Year 10 French Trip) on La Phare Amedee (Lighthouse Island) there were lots of banded sea snakes basking on the coral shore (much less comfortable than sand, let me tell you). They're very poisonous but quite helpless and sedate, movement-wise on land - but quick in the sea. I split secondly stopped my soon to be girlfriend from stepping on one. I'd love to say that's how I won her heart, but that came later from persistence :)

There has been a Carpet Python curled up in my neighbours Birdbath all day today. I watered their garden yesterday because they are away but didn't fill up the birdbath. It has been chilly here today with drizzle so the ceramic must have been warmer than the air temperature even though it was half full of water. Reptiles are fascinating things!

I was reading yesterday about a cool snake that plays dead and flips onto it's back. If you turn it over it flips back again. Also it flattens out like a cobra and "strikes" to try and scare things off, even though it doesn't have any fangs.

We are halfway through spring and we are having one last cold snap here.

First snake of the season I've handled today, a blind snake (Non venomous)

Only other snake so far is a small diamond python in the shed.

Hi all I'm from Darwin and I just thought I'd show you some of the awesome snakes and exotic pets we get to keep up here :D Getting a license to keep a snake is as easy as driving to town and buying a snake is as easy as walking down the street! I live on a street where there is a pet shop, brother also works there hence the many snakes and turtles at my house :)

This photo is of my youngest brother holding charlie, the coastal carpet python. He's about 2 meters long, and as wide as a coke can in his girth!

This photo is of Charlies girlfriend, she is unnamed at this time and she's just laid 15 eggs, so around Christmas time well have a lot more snakes! she's also a coastal and is massive, well over 2 meters and a lot wider than a coke can!

This photo is of me back when I was fat with a bad haircut 8o But to a snake enthusiast this is pure porn, a Green Tree Python! Native to a very small part of far north Queensland they are very expensive. Although they've gone down in price now, at the time of this handling, she was worth about 5 grand.

A bit off topic but I'm sure you'll like these guys, My turtles!!! This is Alice, shes a northern long necked turtle, about 5 years old I think, we adopted her after she outgrew her previous little fish bowl home.

This is an unnamed turtle I adopted from a kid who smashed his tank while cleaning it. Hes pretty big and eats lots! He's a Yellow Faced Turtle!

Cool photos!

You might want to host them after getting an account at imageshack.us, flickr.com, tinypic.com or something similar. You only get a certain amount of room when you post attachments hosted here on Bluelight.

:)

Nice pics

I used to have a male and female pair of eastern long neck turtles. They were very funny to watch :)

I grew up on a farm in SW Vic and had countless run-ins with tiger, brown, red belly black and copperhead snakes.

Out of hundreds of stories of close calls, I think my best story is this...

Late one winters night, I went to stoke the fire place and realized I had run out of wood inside. I stepped out the back door (close to the fireplace) and felt something wriggling under my foot and a tapping sensation on top of my steel capped boots.

I shone the torch down at my feet to see a number of baby tiger snakes between 30-40cm long, one of which was under my left foot and ferociously biting the steel cap of my boot.

As it turns out, there were multiple snakes living and breeding in between the cracks and stone walls of our old bluestone house, especially near the fireplace. We used to have the fire going throughout the day and night for most of winter. This provided enough warmth to keep them active at this time of year, when their bush relatives were hibernating underground. It also explains the mysterious death of my boxer x ridgeback the week before. I let him outside to do his business at 2am on a 3 degree June night and found him dead an hour later. RIP Lajon :(

I have countless other stories, snakes are a part of life in Australia, even in the city. How I haven't copped a bight in the flesh is beyond me. I know plenty of farmers who have been bitten by tiger, brown and copperhead snakes.

One day I took my welding helmet off, after welding a roll cage into my rally car and a 1.5m tiger snake struck the welding helmet in my hand before slithering off into the piles of car parts in my shed. A fang had penetrated the tough plastic of the helmet and there was a decent squirt of venom on it. There was no one else on the farm that day and I was 400m from a phone. Would have been a very close call if the snake had got my arm/hand instead.

Watching snakes hunt and eat mice in the hay stacks was a favorite summer past time when I was a kid.

They are amazing creatures that should be protected and respected :)

For real..

Speaking of reptiles.. i got a real appreciation for steve irwin and his work when i went on a fishing trip to melville island 100k's off the coast of darwin..

Great place!

I saw massive crocs in the wild..some we even enticed RIGHT to the boat by attaching a can to the fishing line. Amazing, beautiful creatures!!

Where I grew up in south west NSW we get all sorts, and frequently lol.

A couple memorable stories -

1. The varandah at a house I used to live in at our property has a large tree hanging over it. My dad and his worker were sitting around having smoko and out of no where a rather decent sized brown snake drops out of the tree and onto the worker's lap. Typical shitstorm follows, with snake getting flung through the air and my dad grabbing the convieniently placed shotgun resting next to the door. He took a shot, poor snake got blasted into peices and shards of concrete flying everywhere. The dent in the concrete is still there and makes me laugh whenever I see it.

2. Clean up australia day when I was a kid in the scouts. We were combing the river bank for trash and having been doing it all day I wasnt really looking at what I was picking up. So when I leant down to pick up what I thought was trash and my hand met yet another rather large scalely brown snake I was suprised to say the least lol. The caring fellow only felt the need to graze me however, which was good of him because I really wasnt in the mood for another visit to the emergency room =P

Oh dude, In my room I've got a fish tank containing two short neck turtles, they're always a favourite of the trippers... Poor things constantly having fish eye'd weirdos staring at them for hours on end :P Even when not tripping they are relaxing to watch because they are such elegant swimmers

Fishing's supposed to be great up there! If you're determined enough you can launch your boat from the city and drive a few hours there.

Crocs are scary as, not so common in Darwin, but a short 150 kay drive to the Adelaide River and Arnhem Land are supposed to have the highest concentration of salt water crocodiles in the world...

My only memory of encountering a wild snake was when i was younger around 13? I was walking through bushland near my school, and saw something move within the leaves.. as i went to have a closer look i saw the snake skin and the coil.. i could tell this was a Dugite because i had seen them around in the past..

I froze up and backed away so quietly, i like snakes.. but coming across them in bushland scares the ever living shit out of me.

I've had pythons and that wrapped around me at snake farms, the texture of the skin is so weird to feel sliding around your neck and arms, the way they coil themselves around your body is so cool.
