100 people charged with drug possession after dance festival — Penrith
Sunday, 20 Sep 2009 09:35am

Police have charged 100 people with drug offences following a dance festival at Castlereagh in Sydney’s west yesterday.

Between 10am and 10pm, a large scale dance festival was held at the Sydney International Regatta Centre on Castlereagh Road.

The event attracted a crowd of approximately 15,000 people with a major police operation being conducted to ensure the safety of all party goers.

Police from Penrith and neighbouring local area commands as well as officers from the Drug Dog Unit and Public Order and Riot Squad attended the event.

With the use of a police drug dog, a large number of people were searched and 100 people were issued court attendance notices for possessing prohibited drugs. The main drugs detected at the festival were ecstasy, amphetamines and cannabis.

A 19-year-old Canley Heights man was arrested after he was allegedly found in possession of 140 ecstasy pills at the festival.

He was taken to Penrith Police Station where he was charged with supplying a prohibited drug and refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court today.

The festival was also marred by a number of small brawls which erupted during the evening with officers from the Public Order and Riot Squad stepping in to remove the culprits.

Penrith Duty Officer, Chief Inspector Damon Cox said he was disappointed and concerned to see so many people arrested for drug possession and anti-social behaviour.

“The general behaviour of the festival goers was pleasing and most who attended had a fun and safe time, however, it is disappointing to see a small minority of people ruining it for others.

“I am saddened to see so many young people being arrested for drug possession but I make no apologies for the hard work police did during the festival to detect those hell bent on breaking the law,” Chief Inspector Cox said.

During the course of the dance festival over 200 people received medical treatment for heat exhaustion and minor injuries while five people were taken to Nepean Hospital suffering suspected drug overdoses.

“This event could have ended in tragedy and with five people being taken to hospital for drug overdoses – it is five people too many. I want people to realise drugs aren’t fun, they are dangerous and they kill people.

“We will continue our investigations into all those arrested and charged with drug possession and I expect further charges will be laid,” Chief Inspector Cox said.

Brawls, drugs and arrests

Five suspected drug overdoses, 100 people charged with drug offences and brawls caused problems for organisers at the DefQon.1 music festival in Penrith on Saturday.

The controversial festival took place in hot conditions at the Sydney International Regatta Centre for around 12 hours yesterday.

The event attracted a crowd of approximately 15,000 people with a major police operation being conducted to ensure the safety of all party goers.

Police from Penrith and neighbouring local area commands as well as officers from the Drug Dog Unit and Public Order and Riot Squad attended the event.

Many in attendance at the event labelled it well-organised and one of the best dance events of its kind ever.

Praise has been coming in thick and fast at the InTheMix website.

"I gotta [sic] say that was the best organised festical i've ever been to. Sound, production, layout, location, no bar queues, mostly decent crowd, pretty much was all perfect. Easy and quick to move between stages with no problems unlike FMF where the main stage was baricaded and blocked off," one poster said.

"Not much into the hard dance scene so went in with 0 expectations and left in awe. Good to see sound was pretty much perfect no matter where you were at any of the stages."

I want people to realise drugs aren’t fun

Someone has clearly never taken MDMA.

Anyway, I'm not sure what to think of the security. On the one hand, I walked through the gates around 12 or 12:30, only ever saw one dog and cruised right past it no problems, so I'm thinking they must have massively ramped up the number of dogs after an hour or two, or toned it down just before I arrived. There were no dogs inside the festival proper, and I didn't once see the cops in there do anything except stride around looking menacing. I guess I should count myself lucky that I skipped the major dog presence.

Likewise with OD's and violence, only saw one incident of each (the oft mentioned brawl at the black stage, which was a bit of a laugh really, and a shirtless muzza-esque bloke on the ground in a bad state with some paramedics just as the red stage was clearing up after Zany closed his set). For an event of that scope, I think those numbers are fairly positive, and the fact that the majority of attendees had an awesome time with no interferance from cops/blowouts/people starting fights, should count as a huge positive for the party.

Are they charging people for small quantities of cannabis these days? I thought one normally got a cannabis caution? Might just be a festival thing..justify their prescnce etc ?

Well you're kind of asking for it by smuggling cannabis into a festival, pills are one thing, but cannabis is much more conspicuous, both in storeage and in useage.

What a day so much fun pity the cops focus on catching people eating substances instead of the people looking for fights.

Defqon.1 was absolutely fantastic. Well run, well policed, well organised. VERY well organised.
ok so 5 people got sick , out of 15000 - that's like 0.003% of the ravers.
.. and yeah out of 150 people, 149 were well behaved (one wasn't).

It was still a very awesome event. I loved it. I am 38 years old and I am proud to have been part of it. (and my legs are killing me hahaha).

fun note : at the end they were giving away posters of the event, posters with photos of the event itself : they must have done a montage with photos during the day (until dark) and then started printing before 10pm when people walked out. TOO GOOD - bloody dutch people haha.

Amusing note : The people with an ID from VICTORIA had a vip line with extra strong search. HhAHHAHA I felt special.

hopefully the dust settles for Melbourne and we get Defqon1 again here.

Wow really? That's fucked, and kind of funny...

i think the saddest thing here is people's need to have a scrap at a fricken dance festival.....wtf!

..but then again it was held in the western suburbs ;)

i got there at like 12 and had bag checked twice, patted down twice, and walked past 2-3 dogs but cruised past no probs. alot more secruity than im used to haha.

Thats because Melbourne is very well-known for GHB users. I noticed that there were a lot of G users there at the festival. I know I was one of them haha.

But I noticed the policing there was crazy. Good if your a non-drug taker of course but fuck me dead, what a pain in the arse security setup! Was pretty intense.
