Overdose doctor who killed grandmother and gave another patient a potentially lethal injection is struck off

A doctor who injected two patients with six times the correct dose of painkiller - killing one of them - was struck off the medical register today.

Dr Michael Stevenson, 57, was spared jail when he admitted the manslaughter of grandmother Marjorie Wright at her home in Workington, Cumbria, in January 2005.
The family GP, from Millom, Cumbria, accidentally gave Mrs Wright, 58, a 30mg dose of diamorphine instead of 5mg.

And he failed to monitor her reaction to the drug and left to do another call, a court was told.

Mrs Wright was found dead when police broke into her home shortly after.
On his next visit for the CueDoc out-of-hours GP service, he administered an identical
overdose to a 59-year-old builder who suffered an immediate respiratory arrest.
The builder survived after paramedics were swiftly called and gave him a vital antidote.
A General Medical Fitness to Practise panel ruled Dr Stevenson's conduct over both patients 'demonstrated a disregard for patient safety'.
Dr Stevenson was handed a 15-month jail term, suspended for two years, at Preston Crown Court in April 2007.
The court was told the senior partner at the Seascale Practice was forced to take a sabbatical by colleagues over concerns about his workaholic nature.
He had suffered from depression since childhood and tried to bury his mental illness through overwork.
The panel, sitting in Manchester, said it was 'disturbed' by the evidence that Dr Stevenson continued to undertake a heavy workload at the time - despite concerns for his wellbeing.
Removing Dr Stevenson from the register, panel chairman Professor Ken Hobbs said: 'He (Dr Stevenson) has failed to demonstrate any insight into his attitude in this respect, nor did he acknowledge the risk which such an excessive workload posed to patient safety.

'The panel considers that Dr Stevenson's conduct demonstrates a continuing risk to patients and regards it to be fundamentally incompatible with his continuing to be a registered medical practitioner.'

This guy so deserved to go to jail! That is fucked. Quite interesting that he was administering heroin as a painkiller though.

I haven't heard of H being dosed as a painkiller in UK in ages, I have relatives there also. Crazy shit - what a wingnut, sad for the families :/

^ I don't think it's common practice, like I said my cousins there couldn't believe they even have it available like that.

Since the Harrold Shipman affair it's been much, much, much less common and fairly unpracticed other than in Hospices with terminally ill patients.
This will again result in a tightening of prescribing controlled pharmaceuticals to those who actually need them (which is what happened after the Shipman case).

Still, what a fucking numpty.. There's an obvious visual difference between 5 and 30 :|

If it was an 'identical' overdose he administered to both patients, wouldn't you guys agree there's a strong possibility that he just brought the wrong concentration vial with him that day? Think about it, what's more likely, a higher concentration was accidentally used and administered at the usual volume, or a trained professional who injects the same people with the same stuff all the time accidentally pumped someone full of SIX times the volume of liquid he was used to seeing loaded, then went on to the next patient and somehow managed to perfectly execute the same mistake again (really, no pun intended).

The article doesn't imply at all that he did it on purpose.. it sucks for the old woman and her family, and thank god the guy got narcan'd in time, but I don't think he should go to jail. The guy's 57 and probably been helping people as a doctor the majority of those years.. he just burned himself out doing it...

• Diamorphine HCL injection 5mg vials in packs of 5
• Diamorphine HCL injection 10mg vials in packs of 5
• Diamorphine HCL injection 30mg vials in packs of 5
• Diamorphine HCL injection 100mg vials in packs of 5
• Diamorphine HCL injection 500mg vials in packs of 5

There ya go, this is a newer document, but I'd imagine the different concentrations were available at the time of the accident.

And take a look here...

Not too familiar with H but can anyone around here handle 30mg? Or is that pretty ridiculous?

I'm sure many people here could handle that amount, but an elderly woman sure as hell couldn't unless she had a tolerance. Same with the other bloke, it didn't seem like he had a tolerance either.

Dragynfyr - Both boxes look extremely similar so I agree with your assumption, I very much doubt he meant actual harm to either of them.

I have to say after seeing how similar the different ampoules are packaged it has made me a little more sympathetic towards the doctor but not much. He still killed somebody by not paying enough attention.

Just a reminder also that price discussion is not allowed, whether it be street prices or prices of pharmaceuticals.

even if it's stuff only available to pharmacies and country specific? =p haha ok, noted :)

*wonders...decides to test limits* sooo.... liike.... If I say 'wal-mart has 30 day supplies of select prescription drugs for only 4 dollars!', that would have to be struck down by the hand of a wrathful modgod?

lol sry =p

oh, and just so you guys know, I wasn't trying to say that the vials in the pic were the same ones used by the doctor, just show you that apparently the doses mentioned in the story seem to be standard issue.

Doesn't matter if its only available to pharmacies or what but the post in question actually compared the cost of the pharmacy only medicine to the illicitly sold drug so it still wouldn't be allowed.

ahh.... discussing how the principal of buying in bulk at reduced rates applies to both worlds is blackballed? So many rules! lol you guys must go to an awesome mod-training camp when you get the job =p
