Stating the obvious
I personally would like to see some research done into how GBL has increased in sales exponentially to its media coverage over the years.
Not that it will ever be done, and it would have to be backdated and people would have to remember when they first heard about it and when they first bought it, but it is something I have been thinking about for ages.
Personally my encounters with GHB-alikes started in 1999 with an article in a magazine about "liquid ecstacy" and how a new legal drug was being sold in clubs for £5 a cap. And then it went into how people were mixing it with alcohol and passing out. It was mentioned in various places in magazines that year and then no more said.
In 2001 there was a short documentary on channel 4 concerning how it was legal to posess, but illegal to sell. The undercover journalist went into a sex shop and procurred some straight away.
Following that I went into a sex shop and was denied

, so gave up.
Read about GHB kits via erowid about 6 months later, but I was back at my parents and no way was I going to order something like that in a house with a control freak father who searched my possessions even though I was 25

Had some GHB given to me in April 2005 and tested it out (only had a small amount) and thought that it was ok but now it was no longer legal to sell kits online so therefore I would never have any again.
Cut to October 2005 and every paper in England had an article about GBL, the club drug that was basically GHB but was legally available online as an alloy cleaner etc. Well I was online next day and the day after I had my first 125ml.
Conclusion: I would never have heard about GBL and its availability without the national media. Since then there was a call for it to be banned at the end of 2007, more talk of banning in June 2008 and this year, first the girl dies, then later her mother comes back to warn the world of the dangers some more, and this last week the Government is talking about banning it again.
If I was in the government and was an anti-drug type I would want things like this kept under wraps as soon as they were brought to light in order to prevent many people knowing.
If GBL had silently been made illegal to possess without any fuss in 2006 it would have been a successful coup.
Right now after multiple mentionings in the media so many people know about it that its going to be selling like "hot cakes"....and it wouldn't be at all surprising if a whole host of incidents occur before January 1st.
Anyway Mr Policeman I will now be moving to mainland Europe
