antidepressants and marijuana

I just started Prozac and Wellbutrin yesterday. My doctor says if I smoke marijuana while taking them, they will have no effect.

Does anyone know why this is? I can't figure it out for the life of me...

I mainly use marijuana when I get agitated and irritable, which is quite often, and for insomnia. I have a medical card, but I have no idea how I"m going to get through a month without it while these antidepressants start to work.

I don't think your doctor is being truthful, at all. I've been taking Celexa for quite some time now, and pot has had little to no effect on it...if anything, the first week or two I took them I felt like I wasn't getting as stoned, but that went away.

it's not true pharmacologically. marijuana isn't going to stop prozac from inhibiting your seratonin re-uptake. BUT, from a medical standpoint, it's hard to treat depression in someone who continues to smoke marijuana. some people disagree, even to the extent that they recommend marijuana as a treatment for depression (my .02 -- depression is such a personal illness that it's hard to generalize regarding the efficacy of various treatments).

i was told the same thing by my psychiatrist several years ago (treated for depression and ADD/ADHD) . . he said he could help me, but if i kept smoking pot (and i was smoking daily) there was only so much he could do. i made a lot of progress, but don't doubt that i could have made a lot more if i had followed his advice.

that was my experience with zoloft, although it continued the whole time i was taking it.

I find that marijuana doesn't help me with my depression at all... in fact i think it makes it a bit worse to be honest. I just smoke it so I can calm down and sleep at night mainly.

Did zoloft work for you? I'm seriously to the point where I will try anything. The only reason I finally gave in is because I took ecstasy for the fist time this weekend, and to be honest... I've never been happy like that for as long as I can remember. I just kind of like my brain and would rather not drop E every night... :)

oh yeah . . marijuana plays a huge role in depression for a lot of people.

zoloft worked to an extent. i was really unstable as well as unhappy, and it kind of evened me out and allowed me to deal with day-to-day life. but once i got my shit together (pulled up grades, got back into exercise and social life, etc.), i started to get frustrated with the way it made me feel not-quite-myself and stopped taking it. but by then i was out of the woods and was able to manage my life w/o it.
