Anesthesia Concerns - I'm a Regular Opiate User & Get Operated on Next Monday

Hey Folks,

Just wanted to make a post regarding some concerns I have..

Is there any known interactions between Opiates, specifically pod tea, and Anesthesia?

I'm getting some plastic surgery done next Monday, and I want to avoid any and all possible interactions. To be honest, I'm a pretty up-front and honest guy, and I gladly admitted to the doctors that I'm a casual marijuana smoker, but I didn't want to alert them of my opiate habit thus possibly screwing up my potential for quality pain meds for post-surgery recovery.

My habit is 1TSP of dried ground pods per day for depression, nothing major, I'd probably equate it to a 5mg vicodin, or even less. But still, just want to make sure I'll be okay!

Thanks in advance for any replies.

Prior to your plastic surgery, a propofol induction is typically combined with some volatile anesthetic. There are some potential interactions with poppy tea and these agents, specifically an increased incidence of bradycardia and negative inotropism (a reduced contractility of the heart muscle).

I would advise against taking poppy tea on the day of your surgery. It contains a number of other compounds (aside from opiates) which could interact with the anesthesia.

Thanks for the informative post sir, it is greatly appreciated..

Do you know the possible interactions that can happen? If you could list them that would be great.. And is this something that happens with all opiates? Or just pod tea?

Definitely not going to dose on the day of surgery now, but should I be weary of doing it the day before due to the Tea's long half-life??

Now I'm a bit scared!

IMO , you should be fine. Your poppy pod habit is very small. I would not dose on the day of surgery though.

I would only worry if I had a huge opiate habit and had to go under. Sometimes opiates are used for sedation, and they could use too little or something shitty like that.

Dosing the day before the surgery will most likely not result in any complications; in fact, you should probably avoid being in opiate withdrawals during the surgery, so it may be necessary for you to take it...

I woke up while having my wisdom teeth removed they used Fentanyl I told them that I had a high tolerance "natural" they apparently did not believe me and when I woke up they were shocked luckily they had not really begun yet and I was out only a few seconds so they gave me more and it worked but I think about what if I was under until half way through 8o !!!

Oh but your case your fine thats not a habit in my book I was using alot of opiates at the time and it was taking me over 200mgs of Oxycodone to get high!!!

I didn't think they would use something like Fentanyl just to put somebody under. It seems to me like there are much better chemicals for putting people to sleep than opiates, but then again, there's no M.D. after my name.

Fentanyl is rarely used for this purpose. Sufentanil for induction in conjunction with a volatile anesthetic like sevoflurane is better, and is sometimes used for extractions.

Anesthesia is interesting; for a time I had wanted to go into anesthesiology...

My last surgical proceedure involved a general anesthetic.

At the time I was prescribed Oxycontin, Tramadol and Xanax. (40mg/300mg/2mg respectively)

The doctor delivering the anesthetic just told me to take exaclty the same dose as I always take. I was worried as well until he told me this.

He used Fentanyl and Midazolam to knock me out. How do I know? I asked before I went off to lala land.

I awoke feeling like a million bucks :)

A fentanyl/versed combo is a pretty common way to put someone out.

I was given this combo for my wisdom teeth...but unfortunately I woke up about half way through. Even more unfortunate is that I was awake enough to see and feel, but not enough to tell them I was hurting like a mother fucker. The sweat pouring off my body shoulda been a hint but I got nada.

Best of luck.

Im confused regarding why potent opioids (like fentanyl) are so commonly used as general anesthetics. It just seems a bit odd to me to essentially induce a controlled opioid overdose in order to achieve anesthsia. What are the advantages going this route as opposed to using something like propofol?

The only advantage the occurs to me is that analgesia that will likely still be present upon the patient awakening. For a patient coming out of surgery who will likely be in a ton of pain, I can see the advantage of the use of fentanyl as the general anesthetic, as Im sure its analgesic properties would still be lingering as the patient came to, and would thus, effectively alleviate some of the post-surgical pain. But aside from this aspect, it just seems odd to me. Like killing a fly with a hammer.

Well, I'm not sure how to revive someone from a propofol OD, but its pretty simple to wake someone up from an opiate OD.

This may impact the decision of surgeons who don't have a highly paid anesthesiologist sitting around awaiting orders.

just thought i'd inform ladies and gents,

everything went 100% fine..

I even took my 1TSP pod tea dose early morning, and vaporized some weed a few hours before the procedure due to early morning unexplained nausea..

Woke up post-op feeling like I hadn't even been operated on, and have been in minimal pain and dosing on hydrocodone for the past few days.. havn't taken a dump since monday though, lol

It is good to hear everything went well for you.

It was a good question, and I am sure it will benefit may BL members.
