State Police Pull Over Speeding Car, Find $1 Million In DrugsStory posted 2009.08.07 at 01:50 PM EDTState police said officials pulled over a speeding car on the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Somerset County Wednesday night and found $1 million in drugs. Police said it is the second largest heroin bust in the state and the largest ever in Somerset County. Officials confiscated 25,000 stamped bags of heroin with the help of drug sniffing dogs. The drugs would sell for $1 million on the street. Corporal Vincent Mock said Deshawn Ulmer, 45, was nervous during the stop and was driving without a license. "Corporal Mock did an excellent job and his training and his ability to recognize that there was criminal activity afoot. It's that extra step that this trooper has taken to take the drugs off the street in Somerset County and part of Western Pennsylvania," said Sergeant Tony Delucca. Tameyka Lawrence, 19, was a passenger in the car, police said. Troopers said even thought this is a large amount of heroin it still only amount to about 2% of the drugs going across the Turnpike. Both Ulmer and Lawrence were arraigned on charges of manufacture, delivery or possession with the intent to manufacture or deliver heroin; possession of 25,000 stamp bags of heroin; use, possession with the intent to use drug paraphernalia and conspiracy. Bond has been set at $750,000 each. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Aug. 10. Both are being held in the Somerset County Jail. Story posted 2009.08.07 at 01:50 PM EDT

Man, that sucks!

Plus I'm not sure how they expect to get $40 per bag.
My first thought as well. Even with the "suburban/rural" markup, it's unlikely to pay more than $20 per stamp, less when buying in bundles, etc. Hell, they were probably going to be sold in Pittsburgh where last I heard they're 10.

While this is a very large bust for a low level operation, don't forget that this is just that: a low level drug operation.

Stamped bags are the bottom rung of the ladder. The Heroin has already gone from a poppy field, to a farm lab, to a factory lab, to a number of distribution points and middlemen, to a number of bulk dealers, to a number of smaller bulk dealers, to the guys who actually do the packaging and retail sales, to the local gangs that run open air or phone number operations.

While that is a lot of stamp bags, realistically it probably is enough for one gang/crew running a few corners in Pittsburgh to stay in business for a week.

How many gangs, how many corners are there in Pittsburgh, PA?

Very true. Like the cops even admit, this is about 2% of the drugs that find their way to Pittsburgh from jersey and the Philly area.

He had roughly 2 and a half kilos of heroin on him if the bags were the standard 100mg ones, which is in no way shape or form worth a million dollars.

I just love the exaggeration ( propaganda ) the cops do to make the bust seem like they've done something great to stem the drug trade. The middle echelon above him will just have a new person start moving thier dope ( not to mention there are lots more operations of the same caliber moving work in ) to Pittsburg. It might dry up a few low level dealers, but it won't disrupt the trade for long....if at all. It's an unwinnable war thats destroying countless lives on many different levels, directly and indirectly.

meh :\ :|

some people seem to just fuck themselves...
speeding while carrying that much product in the car? shit i'd be driving strictly the legal rate

you know what happens when they give you just one...they'll have to give EVERYONE one too!

About 2 months back in Buffalo there was a "big" bust involving a dope "kingpin". Not one dude I knew had a problem scoring the next day. The hype the paper puts out is amazing.
