Info on PEA:
Phenylethylamine/Phenethylamine/PEA are all names for the same compound. In short, PEA is a natural neuromodulator that is produced in the brain. PEA is similar to dopamine and nor-epinephrine and is often touted on the Internet as “enhancing dopamine and nor-epinephrine transmission”, “elevating mood”, or as “the body’s natural amphetamine”. In addition many forum-users have described its’ effects as euphoric and is often generalized as a nice “high”. PEA is currently marketed as a nootropic effective in improving mood and increasing energy. Online research (forums) have helped discover that certain doses of PEA can induce a “high”.
My experience:
All of these claims had me intrigued. I have tried many nootropics that work on mood. I have tried 5-HTP, tryptophan, SAM-E, L-Phenylalanine, D-Phenylalanine, GABA, ect ect. Obviously I like getting high but also the science end of it interests me greatly. I often experiment on myself. Anyways I bought some PEA and decided to take the average dose to induce the “high” I had read so much about.
I took 1.5 grams. The general consensus online is that the threshold for effects is around 1 gram. It seems that the bodie’s MAOB? can immediately metabolize about a gram of the PEA so you need a gram just to counter the MAOB + the ½ gram for the effects. I took the dose via gel caps, do not eat the stuff or mix in drink it taste like metal!
In about 10 minutes I could feel the effects coming on… first a change in vision (difficult to describe), then a tingling sensation in the peripherals, and lastly some form of brain buzzing going on but altogether different than the buzz of a cigarette or a beer. The effects peaked at about 20 minutes and were gone by about 30 minutes.
Although I was glad I experienced the PEA it did not live up to my expectations. It provided no discernable energy, which was an affect that I was expecting after reading about it. Does it provide a “high”?…I would say yes, but in the same way something like salvia provides a “high”. Basically it gives many of the effects of being high except all of its’ effects are neutral. The effects are neither positive or negative. The tingling in the limbs for example isn’t really pleasant but not altogether unpleasant. I’m pretty sure the “buzz” doesn’t effect any of the key neurotransmitters because it is NOT euphoric it is just a weird buzzing kind of like a small dose of salvia.
Cliffs:
You can become “intoxicated from PEA” but it is hardly a high and if it is a high is certainly not pleasant. At best it is a neutral experience. Anyone who says it is euphoric has not experienced euphoria. Save your money.
