i bought a bag of Scotts premium potting soil with out doing any research on it :| very stupid of me... How is this soil, will it work? will it work good? and my baby is about a week- a week 1/2 in... i was planning on transfering it into this soil probuly today but i want to mke sure it was okay to grow with....

Thanks to those who answer....

its says exactly this on the bag

0.07-0.01-0.03

Total nitrogen...............0.07%
0.04% Ammoniocal nitrogen
0.03% Nitrate Nitrogen

Availble Phosphate........0.01%
Soluble Potash..............0.03%

and then it says

CONTINOUS feeding up to full 4 months

i dont know much about soil and all that soil i just copied exactly what it said..

thanks

that soil is fine. as long as your pot is big enough for the roots to have room to grow. and if you give it ferts they should have no problem in that soil.

I have 5 years exp. with indoor/outdoor hydro, i never used soil too much of a commitment. If you ever become interested in hydro a simple very efficient technique that I used was DWC (deep water culture) just FYI.

Chances are it will work just fine, however on your next grow id recommend some better soil. Better soil = Better herb 90% of the time.

Although with cheap soil you have to watch out for things like fungus gnats :(

While realitively easy to control and fix, its still a pita and can get out of control. The gnats themselves dont hurt anything, but are annoying, however their larva feed on organic matter in the soil (anything from roots, to old decaying bark)

I've got a good friend on another forum using Miracle Grow's Organic choice. He contstantly post pictures of them doing great. He also just uses CFL lights and some outdoor.

You can even make your own soil realively easily, just mix peat moss, limestone, ewc, perlite. Then for when they are a bit older make another batch of the same, but add in 1/4c. of blood/bone and kelp meal for NPK, aswell as a touch of dolemite lime again, mix this soil 2-3 weeks before using, and DONT use on seedlings/small plants.

get some foxfarm from your local hydroponics store. good shit, bat guano worm castings ocean kelp, all kinds of good stuff in there.

or bumpercrop, they sell that at some nurserys. anything with bat guano and worm castings should be top notch soil.

You probably have this but dont forget Perlite, as I said you probs have that but just in case you don't..Mix 2 parts soil to one of Perlite.

Maybe you guys can help, Ive got a seed starting to sprout, but the container its in only has about an inch of mix, so i need to transplant it asap. Whats the best method? Cut out the bottom and put in a bigger pot? Or try to lift it out?

Well you should only transplant once the plant has had time to establish a good root system, this typically takes about 2 weeks.

The usual method is to simply turn the plant pot upside down and gently squeeze the sides till the compacted soil drops out the pot, but as said transplants are dependant on a good root system already been in place.

Basically make sure you put your seeds in a decent sized pot to start with and with much more than a inch of mix, as I said you need to establish a good root system before you think about transplanting but as you don't have that just try and do it as I said. So turn the container upside down and gently squezze the side of the container it should then pop out no problem the key is to be as gentle as possible as plants don't like undue stress.

The only bag soil I will ever use is the above mentioned Fox Farm, I think it is called "Ocean forest". I am slightly biased though, I love fox farm products. It may cost more, but in my experience it is more than worth the invesment. Nothing but the best for my babies.

I suspect it will be fine. Drainage is very important... put some stones/broken crockery or something of the sort at the bottom of the pot to aid drainage as weed doesn't like to be soggy. That was irrelevant to your question, but I thought I may as well give you a tip.
:) Happy growing.
