Most effective way to obtain Kief (from about an Oz.)

For a long while I have wanted to make some honey oil with an ounce of weed and then mix it with the kief from that same ounce to form a solid hash. I think its called jelly hash. As time goes on Im wanting to do it more and am now looking into everything Id need.

I have a grinder with a screen that collects the pollen but I usually only buy a few grams at a time. It would take forever to grind a whole ounce and collect all the kief from it using that small grinder. Is there an easier way to get all the kief from an amount of this size?

I've seen the 'Hash Maker' which is essentially just a tub with a screen. Chuck in your buds and shake it to get all the kief. I was wondering if this would be more effective.

Does anyone have any better ideas?

^i must respectfully disagree.

a coffee grinder will pulverize your weed if it is dry, giving you plant powder, ie not trichomes.

id use a dry sieve screen box.

yep use a BIG kief box. you can make one if your handy and have access to the required materials.
 
Ya I also gotta disagree with the coffee grinder, and this is coming from experience! We actually used a cheese grater but its the same principle. My friends and I bought a QP and tried to do this with about an ounce and at the time we thought we got so much kief! Looking back it was definitely mostly pulverized weed..
 
I have a keif catcher... box with a fine screen in it. It's made of wood, and the top and bottom of it were glass plates edged in wood, which could both be removed. It's absolutely ancient and stained yellow from use. =D It's really beautiful, I oiled the wood to make it shine. <3 It's terribly easy to use. Glass is amazing like that.

From what I hear, modern ones are inexpensive. Get a keif box.
 
How would one use kief from an ounce when they've already done a butane extraction on it? Cant imagine there'd be much left.

I like the coffee grinder method, but as said you have to be careful. you have to do it very lightly, just tap tap tap. if you hold it down you just grind everything to shit. You can tell when youve got kief vs crystal. Anytime ive ground the bud too much the hash never sticks together. If ive done it correctly the kief turns into hash super easily, barely even need heat to get it to stick.

If you for a kief box dont buy one, make one. Keep in mind too that the smaller the screen the higher the quality of hash. same principles as bubble bags, which is just a series of progressively finer screens.
 
coffee grinders do work well. but i think to get the MOST keif you possible can. use a keif box. even rub the nugs against the screen, even though the keif will have tiny green leaves it gets alot of crystals off. even just doin it the normal way, you'll yield a whole lot of crystals. WAY more that just using a keif grinder.

Plus in the keif grinder some of the crystals get stuck in between the screen and the metal part and you'll lost some that way too. That happened i my grinder and eventually it built up so much the screen was forced out and finally i was able to get alllll that keif stuck in there over the year or so i had it, but i had to break it. so just stick with the box. Good Luck

You know, just to ensure that the oil isn't complete shit.


But hey, anything's worth trying at least once.
 
Just to be specific to the OP "jelly hash" is a certain ratio of oil and high quality kief. lots of people call any oil and kief mixture jelly hash but the way jelly hash was originally done by Soma i believe is a 3:2 ratio of oil and kief inb/w 120mic and 70 mic (dry sift of course)

so to make proper jelly hash you need to get a good kief box i recommend the screen set on bubble bags.com they're the shit
 
Ah, okay. I didnt know that.

To be honest, I might just invest in a decent screen and press that kief using an iron like you see on youtube. My tolerance isnt that high so that will have me goin for a while and Il have an ounce of bud to smoke too. :)

I don't think you could kief it first then make oil from the same ounce. Once you kief it there isn't going to be too many goodies left.

I don't even think the bud would be worthwhile to smoke after you have kiefed it. It may be worth it to put the remains in some cooking oil/butter for edibles though.
