Euthanasia campaigner Philip Nitschke has unveiled a new kit for testing a prohibited euthanasia drug.

It is the first time the kit has been seen in Australia.

Developed by the euthanasia group, Exit Australia, the kit has already been launched in the United Kingdom.

It is designed to test the potency of the barbiturate, Nembutal, which is banned in Australia.

Dr Nitschke says people go to great lengths to obtain the drug and the kit will give them peace of mind.

"So that if they take it in the way that it's suggested they will, not might, have a peaceful and reliable death," he said.

Dr Nitschke launched the kit at a public meeting in Hobart this morning, and now plans to demonstrate it in other states.

He is also lobbying over the Greens' Dying with Dignity Bill which is now before the Tasmanian Parliament.

so in this case, underdosing means you get high

This is great imho, firstly assisted suicide should be legal. Secondly, this is just harm reduction practise to ensure the people are getting the drug they are buying and not something dodgy or impure.

It is a shame they banned free pill testing at music events though, I don't know how they think this is somehow less controversial.

The two most common assisted suicide/euthanasia at home methods promoted by right to die groups are the Darvon Cocktail and Nembutal OD. I read an article not too long ago about the huge number of old and sick people traveling to Mexico to purchase Nembutal meant for farm animal euthanasia (available OTC from veterinary pharmacies/farm stores). Once the story broke the Mexican government clamped down, so the Darvon Cocktail seems to have picked up steam again.

I'm very happy someone decided to do this. It is hard enough to make those final preperations only to hurt yourself further without causing death, or to die painfully.

Darvon cocktail will kill you?

Darvon Cocktail is the name of the suicide / death-inducing combination of drugs that has become popular, and is advocated by the assisted suicide/right to die movement. A good off topic, I think 'Darvon Cocktease' is a good name for a variety of applications.

Option 1: The Darvon cocktail, as documented in the "Guide to a humane self-chosen death"
Note: This cocktail uses Propoxyphene HCl (Darvon, Depronal, Deprancol):

Drug amount
Antiemetic drugs must be taken before
Propoxyphene HCl (Darvon,Depronal,Deprancol) 3.5 grams
Diazepam (Valium),or other long acting Benzodiazepine 300 mg

Option 1a: Darvon cocktail with fast-acting benzodiazepines
Dr. Pieter Admiraal and his committee suggested adding another fast-acting Benzodiazepine (300mg), to potentate the cocktail.

Drug amount
Antiemetic drugs must be taken before
Propoxyphene HCl (Darvon,Depronal,Deprancol) 3.5 grams
Midazolam (Dormicum) 300 mg
Diazepam (Valium) 300 mg

Option 2: The Darvon cocktail, as documented in "The peaceful pill handbook"
Note: This cocktail uses Propoxyphene Napsylate (Darvon-N, Doloxene):

Drug amount
Antiemetic drugs must be taken before
Propoxyphene Napsylate (Darvon-N, Doloxene) 10 grams
Serepax (Oxazepam) 750 mg (25x30 mg)

Propoxyphene is a Sodium channel blocker, which mean that it closes the fast ion channels of neurons which control the conductivity of the crdiac system.(the neuronal process which operates the cardiac muscle's contractions ,which in turn pump blood into the body and back from it).

Scientifically speaking, neurons signal to one another by a process, in which ion channels in the cell's membrane are opened (following an electrical signal propagated from adjacent neurons),and in turn, positive Sodium ions are flowing into the neuron cell, therby altering the trans-membrane potential (meaning that the internal cytoplasm becomes more positively charged than the external cytoplasm),and then the neuron may start to "fire" electrical signals to other neorons, propagating action potentials to adjacent neorons in the cardiac system.

When the Sodium channels are being "blocked",totally or partially ,it delays and hinders the process described above, leading to uncoordinated neuronal signals ,and hence, uncoordinated ventricles' contraction of the cardiac system (tachicardia, and sometimes "torsade de points").Those arrhythmias ,if maintained for too long, would make the heart incapable of contracting the cardiac muscle (since the ventricles are not coordinated),leading to heart faliure and death.

I wonder what the shelf life is. It would be nice to have some around just in case. We all got to die sometime. Some ways are rather unpleasant.
