Wallabies are forcing their way into poppy paddocks and getting "high as a kite".

The increasing trend, revealed in a state government Budget Estimates hearing, can explain the emergence of mysterious crop circles in many of Tasmania's poppy fields, The Advertiser reports.

The wallabies break into the paddocks, eat the poppies and start running around in circles, said Attorney-General Lara Giddings.

"We have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles," she said.

"Then they crash … we see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high."

But the problem is not confined to wallabies, with growers full of stories about deer and sheep eating poppies and acting in a similar way.

"But as growers we try our best to try and stop this sort of consumption particularly by livestock due to concerns about the contamination of the meat," said Tasmanian Alkaloids spokesman Rick Rockliff.

"There is also the risk to our poppy stocks … there has been a steady increase in the number of wild animals and that is where we are having difficulty keeping them off our land."

Think about the joeys!!

The message it sends to those poor little joeys makes me sob. We need to teach harm reduction and get safe eating sites set up, and make methadone and suboxone available to every wallaby that wants it, at no cost.

Australian wallabies are eating opium poppies and creating crop circles

Australian wallabies are eating opium poppies and creating crop circles as they hop around "as high as a kite", a government official has said.

Lara Giddings, the attorney general for the island state of Tasmania, said the kangaroo-like marsupials were getting into poppy fields grown for medicine.

She was reporting to a parliamentary hearing on security for poppy crops.

Australia supplies about 50% of the world's legally-grown opium used to make morphine and other painkillers.

"The one interesting bit that I found recently in one of my briefs on the poppy industry was that we have a problem with wallabies entering poppy fields, getting as high as a kite and going around in circles," Lara Giddings told the hearing.

"Then they crash," she added. "We see crop circles in the poppy industry from wallabies that are high."

Rick Rockliff, a spokesman for poppy producer Tasmanian Alkaloids, said the wallaby incursions were not very common, but other animals had also been spotted in the poppy fields acting unusually.

"There have been many stories about sheep that have eaten some of the poppies after harvesting and they all walk around in circles," he added.

Retired Tasmanian poppy farmer Lyndley Chopping also said he had seen strange behaviour from wallabies in his fields.

"They would just come and eat some poppies and they would go away," he told ABC News.

"They'd come back again and they would do their circle work in the paddock."

Equal rights under the law. I expect every one of these animals to spend the next 3-5 years in lock up and forced to detox in a concrete cell for B&E, burglery and possession.

Ohhh damn I was just about to post this. This also answers the question to that thread about where do the main precursors for pharmacuetical opiates come from. Well 50% are from Australia!

LOL! Ok, on that note, I nominate this thread for the Best of Bluelight!

Just the title had me laughing, then the article turned out to be so much more amazing than I could have imagined lol Society must never forget this moment

I agree. maybe we could cut a deal with one wallaby if he'll be an informant on the big time wallabies but other than that no mercy for these delinquents. some prison time would do them good.

dude someone needs to start sellin to those lil fiends..you could make some easy cash off those wallabies..they'd pay in like little insects or something
