DJing, and the 'ability' to select 20 tracks THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS WRITTEN does not deserve any respect, in my humble opinion (this from a guy who djs regularly). sure djing is lots of fun, but I have found that what it REALLY takes to be a 'good dj' is knowing a lot of well connected people and throwing successful parties.
"what it REALLY takes to be a 'good dj' is knowing a lot of well connected people and throwing successful parties". i'm sorry but you shouldn't call yourself a "dj", cause i don't care how good you are, the fact is you don't know the first thing about being a dj.
to begin with, im a mini deadmau5 fan who thinks that he has about 5 really good tracks and maybe another 5 mediocre ones. the rest of his music is extremely repetitive and generic in its ideas and execution.
that's for his production, as for his live show, i've seen him last year in amnesia in ibiza and i really enjoyed his set. but i don't think i will enjoy it if i see him again.
so to the point, your argument that playing your own production in ableton trumps djing and track selection is utter bullshit imo.
yes it takes time and effort to prepare his set to play his own productions and loops, but it isnt as hard as you make it out to be and djing and track selection for a proper set could be much more difficult.
deadmau5 has been playing pretty much the same set for about a year, largely because he only plays his own music, this alone is a huge downside for your whole argument that its much more difficult to do what he does and that we should respect him for it.
the fact that djs go out there and try to play a different set that matches the venue and the crowd and that also expresses their musical style, through playing current tracks or classics or whatever and maybe going through different genres to create a proper set. that is much harder.
also he was saying in an interview that he always plans for his set down to the last bit and that he doesn't read the crowd or improvise in his playing. im all for djs preparing their set but losing the ability to improvise is just a step too far.
and although his sets are technically good, they have no real flow most of the time. and having his loops and samples prepared for the live set is not that difficult, and no, im not saying that anyone can do it.
for one, all the separate loops he uses are the building blocks of his tracks that are done using ableton, so after he produces a track they are ready for him to use in his live performance.
so if you are a deadmau5 fan, i advise you to channel your admiration and respect towards his production abilities, cause mostly that's what he does, and the skills he uses for his live set are about 90% studio skills, and btw there are producers that are more talented and creative than him by a long shot. but i guess people just have diff perspectives.
