WOULD-BE TRAFFICKER'S SURPRISE $6000 drug deal was M&M's

BY ANTHONY HANEVEER

20/06/2009 12:00:00 AM

A WOULD-BE drug trafficker seeking an ecstasy haul was left red-faced by the Melbourne underworld - paying thousands of dollars for blue M&M's.

Dwayne Grant Seabourne, 21, of Devonport, admitted to police in an airport car park in November last year that he had just flown back into the state with 400 ecstasy pills.

But he was in for a rude shock when the package he had concealed down his pants was opened, the Burnie Supreme Court heard.

Crown prosecutor Jackie Hartnett revealed the luckless Seabourne had imported hundreds of blue M&M's.

And his reaction in a recorded police interview showed he was rather angry, Ms Hartnett said, after forking out $6000 for nothing more stimulating than chocolate.

"He felt someone had essentially ripped him off," she said.

Even Seabourne, a past champion darts player, could not hide a momentary smirk when it was explained in court that he had been duped.

While buying confectionary is not illegal, Seabourne's admissions to police left him facing several charges.

Appearing before Justice Shan Tennent, he pleaded guilty to attempting to traffic in a controlled substance, along with other minor drug use charges.

Ms Hartnett told the court Seabourne had travelled to Melbourne from Launceston on November 26, last year, intending to buy MDMA, otherwise known as ecstasy.

"He returned to Launceston with what he believed were ecstasy tablets," she said.

"He purchased 400 tablets for $15 each ... intending to sell them for $30 each."

She submitted to Justice Tennent that Seabourne should be sentenced on the "basis of the evil intended, not on the basis of the evil that could have been accomplished".

Defence counsel Katie Edwards said the harm that could have come from the "particularly unsophisticated attempt" to deal drugs was nil.

Justice Tennent adjourned sentencing Seabourne to 4.15pm on Wednesday.

har har har, check the merch before you split! shit sucks thoughh

Sucks if he spends years in prison.

Doubt hel go to prison. He's in Aus. A friend of mine go busted with 50 pills and recieved a suspended jail sentence, community service, drug diversion and drug tests. They try not to throw you in jail here unless your really big or do it over and over.

How fucking pissed would you be if you were them, fucking hell. Must be a hell of an idiot to ever fall for that, how does anyone buy that many without testing them let alone looking at them closely enough to realize they are M&Ms.

Thats funny shit it seems that even if they were real he would still have been getting ripped off though...

and if this guy didn't tell the cops anything I doubt he would even get arrested. If he kept his mouth shut he would have been fine, it would have went like this:
cops: "whats in the package?"
guy "I don't know"
instead of
cops: "whats in the package?"
guy "oh it's only $6000 worth of ecstasy"

Oh I see what happened, he was trying to import them via mail/ups/fedex or whatever you Aussies use. The cops got him in the investigation room and pulled some "we already know whats in the package, you can make this easy or you can try to play games" or "so we intercepted your package, you're in some big trouble, the judge might show leniency if you come clean now" type shit. I fuckin hate when cops do that shit. But damn, sounds like you aussies have some pretty lenient MDMA laws.

Would not you be able to notice that melting in your pants? Haha

That is possible, but I was thinking that they had an undercover agent ask him about the MDMA.

Shit, I've seen someone walk on time served and a suspended sentence for possession of 5000 pills and 3/4 pound of whizz, I'd hate to think what that would get you in the States, even with a kick arse lawyer.

rather the us has pretty strict mdma laws. if you are over here cought with pills containing less than 20 grams (!) of mdma the prosecution must drop the case if you agree to go to psychotherapy.

@topic
he could be a free man now if he didn't talk to the police.
rule #1: never ever trust a policeman.

How the hell do you carry 6000 M&Ms around and not think to check the package to make sure it contains what you purchased?

He's an idiot for confessing what he had on him as well. Otherwise he'd probably walk off completely free.

wooooow, it sucks that he got m&m's, whast worse is that he paid 15$ a pill!?!? thats rediculous, so he lost his money, his drugs, and his pride lol

Maybe the guy pulled a switch-a-roo on him.. like showed him a bag/container with 400 real/real looking pills and then auctually handed him the container with the m n m's and he had no chance to examine it, like maybe they did the deal right at the airport..

Kinda like that scam in the movie matchstick men, with nicholas cage..

Or maybe the guy is really dumb as shit and had no idea what a pil should look like..

That is so ironic.

Yep.

They probably planned on rippin him off about the time he agreed to pay 15 a pop all the way up for 400 pills. People bitch about 15 a pop for one.
