Marijuana use could increase the risk of testicular cancer, according to a study by the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center out this week.

If a man has smoked marijuana on a weekly basis or has been exposed to hashish for an extended period of time, the chances of testicular cancer double compared to someone who has never smoked marijuana.

The study found that marijuana could also decrease sperm quality, decrease testosterone levels and cause impotency, since these are similar side effects of testicular cancer.

Men already produce a "cannabinoid-like chemical," which protects the reproductive system from cancer, but marijuana use could reverse that protective chemical and instead work against the body. The marijuana link is somehow associated with "nonseminoma," malignant germ cell tumors, and is increasing the risk.

The study has prompted more research as it has open up a bevy of questions, said Stephen Schwartz, a member of the Public Health Sciences Division at the Hutchinson Center.

"What young men should know is that first, we know very little about the long-term health consequences of marijuana smoking, especially heavy marijuana smoking," Schwartz said in a press release. "So, in the absence of more certain information, a decision to smoke marijuana recreationally means that one is taking a chance on one's future health."

The National Cancer Institute estimates almost 8,100 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer, and 380 will die because of it in 2008.

Patients, survivors, caregivers and loved ones are invited to share their advice, questions and experiences in our Living with Cancer Forum. Last week, readers entered more than 1,000 votes here sharing views on marijuana legalization as medical marijuana cases and Michael Phelps put it in the headlines.

I thought this shit wasn't true.

i remember reading this back in like February. then i found some other articles going against it...so idk :p

umm this is just another stoopid ass 'scare-tactic' guys.. If you believe this then just go ahead and be a brainwashed zombie and suck the governments dick of lies

Care to substantiate that claim? While it is foolish to believe every single negative thing the government says about drugs, it is just as foolish to dismiss every claim without any investigation. Marijuana is a drug, and most drugs carry some physiological risk.

I don't buy this "reversing the endocannabinoid" thing. First, if it's an agonist, it's just doing the exact same thing. Second, if it's an antagonist, obviously THC isn't going to reverse it.

THC is a partial agonist but the potency numbers for endocannabinoids are usually quite high as I recall, so there shouldn't be a Bupe-Naloxone thing going on.

With a little bit of statistical skill, one can link anything with anything else. It's a game among graduate psychology students to see who can come up with the most dubious significant correlation.

I bet that testicular cancer is linked a lot more closely to alcohol or tobacco use than marijuana use, probably by orders of magnitude. There is no reason to believe that marijuana causes cancer in any way. Science is political too.

I think they are full of shit & just trying to combat the THC when exposed 2 cancer destroys the dead ones while leaving the live ones as stated by harvard studies.

"Exposed to hashish" What the fuck is that even suppose to mean? The big red flag is that "could", its probably a theory they're trying to scare people with, adding disinformation to the pile to help cover up for the truths big Pharma is hiding.

Okay... I think the obvious should be stated. Marijuana does not cause testicular cancer. It does exacerbate paranoia, and the evidence of that is displayed in this post. There are two reasons this source should not be taken seriously.

First, "blog" is clearly stated in the link. This leads me to believe that the information isn't based on any accredited source because the person who is writing this isn't being backed fully by the USAToday. Blogs are basically Opinion's columns. Don't EVER take them seriously... EVER. It's junk news.

Second, it is from the USAToday, which may as well be called DrugWarPropogandaToday. Now, if this were from a respected news agency, like the Wall Street Journal, which does contain articles relating to medicine, then I'd be more inclined to feel paranoid about testicular cancer.

TL;DR... I call bullshit on the source.

it's a good bargain compared to pretty much anything else, especially considering the benefits.. ill take the chance :P

^^ I agree. We are taking a chance on our future health each time we drink a glass of wine, eat meat, or cross the street. Deciding to live in a big city with pollution is a huge risk. Walking around downtown is a risk. Driving a car is a risk.
The questions should be a) how significant is the risk, and b) what are the benefits we derive?
In the case of marijuana, the risk seems to be essentially insignificant, and the benefits seem to be great.
