What do you say to friends and people you're in conversation with who are drastically misinformed about the 'dangers' of marijuana?
This one dude I was talking to today, told me I shouldn't smoke becuase "it enhances brain cells so much that no modern tool can detect them, there for, they presume they are dead"
Word-for-word quote.

I just asked him "What? What study has EVER said that?"

To which some girl near us replied "Uranus" and that ended the conversation
What would you have said? What do you say to people like that?

Just tell them you appreciate their input and accept the differences of your opinion. Every person has their opinion and leave it at that! However, it seems they were just throwing a line at you by:

>it enhances brain cells so much that no modern tool can detect them, there for, they presume they are dead"
The whole line says that this is an assumption, and they also assume they are dead.
Not much backing up, nor much sense in that!

yeah ve been in this situation many times
witht eh classic line of

"i dont wana do weed i care about my future"

i just laugh at there ignorance

If somebody said that to me i'd just crack up laughing, leave and go smoke and laugh about it some more. What a fucked up thing to believe..

I choose to let people think for and decide for themselves when it comes to such issues. I believe that it is wrong and potentially insulting to go around trying to convince people who have chosen not to use drugs that they are uninformed and wrong about their personal choices.

Sometimes, I find it is much better to leave people alone, especially if they do not know that much about substances. Most people do not take kindly to people preaching and telling them that they are wrong.

The thing is, misinformed people spread misinformation, which in turn does the same on a never ending cycle, hence, the reason we have commercials like above the influence. Stop the bullshit before everyone believes it... it's not a matter of opinion. Opinion is "Marijuana is great" or "Marijuana sucks", bullshit is:
"it enhances brain cells so much that no modern tool can detect them, there for, they presume they are dead"

I agree but I would like to help them come to the conclusion of "I don't really know" by digging deeper and asking them more about they just stated as fact. Usually there isn't much there except that factoid that they just pulled out of wherever.

In my experience the problem with these conversations is that they are in it for the conversation, not so much the content; so while you are looking to educate, they are just looking to hang out and have a good time.

i usually give them the link to the movie - The Union - The Business Behind Getting High

I think we're a bit confused here. People keep saying the word "opinion", but we're talking misinformation. I guess I've never looked into how weed affects brain cells, but my example is... an older guy at my work:

"All those medical marijuana people condemn cigarettes, when weed is 20 times worse for you."

That isn't true. It's not his opinion, it's misinformation. I run into it all the time, and I never know how to respond. Obviously I don't at work, because no one wants to be the woman who knows all about weed... If it's to someone who I can freely talk to it about, I gently try to bring it up. If not, well, never helps to make people angry.

If they show an interest in learning more of course I would be happy to help them.
