Meth Fueled Frog Hunter Guilty Of Killing Pal

A Tracy man has been convicted of voluntary manslaughter for fatally shooting his friend after a frog-hunting trip in Brentwood during which both men were high on methamphetamine.

Jared Alger, 30, faces more than 20 years in prison in the shooting death of Steve Goodmanson, 40, on Aug. 27, 2006.

Prosecutor Gerald Chang told a Contra Costa County Superior Court jury in Martinez that Alger should be convicted of murdering Goodmanson during an argument and kidnapping his girlfriend, with whom Alger once had a relationship.

But Alger's attorney, Deputy Public Defender Elizabeth Barker, said Goodmanson had provoked Alger by pointing a .22-caliber rifle at him. Alger pushed it away and the gun went off, killing Goodmanson, she said.

"The bottom line is it never should have been charged as murder," Barker said Thursday. "At worst, it was manslaughter."

The men were among a group of friends out hunting for bullfrogs, rabbits and coyotes, Barker said. Both Alger and Goodmanson had been using methamphetamine, she said.

After deliberating for eight days, the jury acquitted Alger on Wednesday of kidnapping and felony assault charges in connection with Goodmanson's girlfriend but convicted him of the lesser charges of false imprisonment and misdemeanor assault.

Alger has been agonizing over the shooting, Barker said.

"He feels horrible," the defense attorney said. "He will feel horrible for the rest of his life."

Chang said, "I am disappointed with the verdict, but respect the jury's decision."

Judge John Laettner will sentence Alger on July 31.

Drugs and/or alcohol+guns= bad news. LOL.

I wonder what a bullfrog hunt jacked on meth would be like. I shudder at the thought.

Sitting out in the woods, listening for croaking, audio hallucinations all around, with a loaded gun. This is where those "the babysitter stuck the twins in a microwave" stories are born.

I wonder how people get talked into this kind of stuff.

"Hey, I haven't slept in 6 days. Wanna smoke more crystal and go hunting?"

^ Fucking rednecks lol. Seriously though I have used and enjoy meth, and I am sick of the total demonization of it but there are some cases where it is inappropriate and to anyone with a brain cell that lights up it is obvious. I have never shot a gun before, much as I would like to try it, as it is a considerably more expensive and legally difficult past-time to pursue in my country of residence than it is the US. I love drugs and alcohol BUT there are certain boundaries that should not be crosses, guns with intoxicants is a big no-no, much as intoxicants and driving or operating heavy machinery is a retarded idea.

When it comes down to it, there are too many idiots out there, too many people unwilling to give their actions and decisions 1 second of thought. Drugs would still be illegal because the world is ran by fascist pig, big brother like Governments, but idiots like this sure as fuck make the medias job of making us look bad REALLY easy.

Hunting mostly does involve drugs and alcohol to be honest. But there is a point where it is obviously too much. Going hunting ripped on meth is one of these cases. But I feel bad for everyone involved, it is a truly tragic incident, and the deceased really should have known better than to put guns in peoples faces.
