Actually, if you're throwing down any money for a headliner, the sound should be the most important facet, regardless of venue.

Well, if you're gonna start a nightclub PERIOD, sound should be on lock. Sicne it took them damn-near 5 years to understand that [and they still haven't, really] one additional headliner ain't gonna help none. Unless PvD does nothing but talk shit about the sound while he's there.

Edit: spricht Sheisse. Which means that they probably won't understand him.

Edit-2:
This event would have been bad-ass at the old Industry space.

regarding the sound....
I have kept my mouth shut but I really feel like I need to intervene here and say something. Not cause I work for the venue or anything I just do shows there.

But.....

when a dj plays at a venue they owe it to their crowd to come in and sound check. They need to be aware of how the room sounds. Not all spaces are created equal.

This shouldn't be a problem with PVD because the dj's performing have previously played there and PVD as well as the other talent will be doing a sound check. Not only that but PVD will be using his own mixer which will be attuned to the venues particular needs prior to the show.

It is Talbott streets feelings that they should not in any way shape or form touch a dj's levels because.... what then is the point. They are the mixers right?

So basically it's up to the talent to know how to properly mix, and do a proper sound check. And with everyone and their brother bringing some kind of wierd setup laptop cajigger thingy with them these days they need to arrive early to set it up and make sure it's working properly.

This is all. :-)

This is a very unfortunate attitude to have for a number of reasons.

Dj/Artists aren't sound engineers. Nor does the promoter/club pay them to be. The sound-check is merely there to make sure that equipment is in working order. That's it. A pro Dj may make suggestions as to what they need--warming sound, more highs, harder-hitting bass--but it is not their job to be able to manhandle the sound equipment to get that sound. That would require such a knowledge of electronics, sound, and each brand of equipment, as well as sound principles and acoustics

Answer me this: who would you expect to know this? A traveling Dj who has to play on a myriad of different systems and configurations? Or the sound guy at the club, who has the single configuration, the single system, and the single space considerations? Hint: It's the sound guy. That's why clubs HAVE sound guys, or at least should.

And by sound guy, I don't mean, the cute guy with the faux-hawk who can tweak some knobs every now and again. Heh.

No one would dare even contemplate throwing a concert with no sound guy simply because Korn did a sound check. That's preposterous. And we shouldn't be expecting PvD to make the club sound better. He'll come in and sound "ach! Nein! Das is' schlecht!!! Die Tiefenregelung ist nicht dicht genug!!" But he sure as hell won't try to adjust the compressor [do they even have one?] to try to make it Tiefenregelung dichter. Or at least I'll be surprised if he did.

It's his job to worry about the music content.

It's the club's job to make sure there's someone there that makes the content sound nice for the club's environment.

It's sound design, not magic; and it's not something that we should expect traveling Djs to be able to do. If they can, awesome. But most can't, because they shouldn't have to.

There's a club.

A club has sound.

Fuckin' fix it.

It's their job.

No one else's.

Moreover, a Dj's hearing deteriorates as the performance goes on. That's why the monitors get louder and louder, highs get higher, volume creeps up. It's because the Dj is 'chasing' the sound as his ears start creating more wax to deaden the noise. So relying on the Dj to keep the levels reasonable is a lesson in futility. Some Djs realize this and consciously make sure that levels and EQs remain where they were in the beginning, and that's awesome if they're that disciplined--most aren't. Most don't trust their ears enough. That's why every concert--electronic or otherwise--should have a sound guy.

And that sound guy should be more than just a knob tweaker.

Maybe a knob gobbler, certainly.

Ha!

At any rate... my rant is done.

For now.

On a more positive note: props to the promoters for lowering the prices a bit.

yes they have compressors. They have one of the most awesome sound system setups I've ever seen on the back end.

I think PVD has his own sound "tech" coming in on the bus.

Not to get into any kind of pissing contest but most house sound guys for bigger shows just advise they usually just setup and load the equipment in and then the tour manager or tour sound tech actually "runs" the board.

anyway I can assure you the sound will be awesome.

Okay, now that actually does make sense. PvD would more than likely have a pro sound guy touring with him. I still say Talbott's sound has improved a hundredfold since, say... early 2007, and having a touring sound tech will only improve the chances for even better sound.

imagine if you will your on the dance floor admist a sea of people and you want a drink.... now image only having to walk 5-10 ft to get a drink instead of through a crowd of hot sweat men (hum... sounds hot) and women (I need a new girlfriend the last one broke up with me for her straight boyfriend). Now imagine getting to see the sea beneath you and having a more private feel.

And if that isn't enough I'm working on working out some stuff... but nothing official yet.

Besides the upstairs bathrooms lock... boy if those walls could talk.

ps regular advanced tickets are for sale at Luna Music downtown just ask the clerk. and they can be purchased at the Talbott Street coat check/box office
