I was wondering, after reading several mixed reports. Does it really make a difference whether you use a roach or filter in a joint? Is there a real scientific explanation as to why using a filter would be less effective than a roach?

basically a filter (from a cig) will soak up the cannabinoids whereas a bit of rolled up cardboard will let it all pass right on through.

Thats my understanding anyway

Personally I don't think it makes that much difference. I can't tell anyway.

Filters are better for my lungs and that's more important to me.

i use roaches so i don't burn myself...thats the only purpose for me

Word. I'm sure it'll work If you use the filter to some extent. In desperate times I've used a hollow cigarette with filter included with more success without. I prefer the "rolled up cardboard" than just rolling an old school joint mostly because you can smoke the whole thing in one shot.

I don't use either when I smoke. I just use the rolling paper and that's it, or I smoke a pipe/bong. I like the full taste of the weed, especially if it's flavored, or the paper is. I think it may be a matter of preference of the smoker mostly.

Some people are concerned about their lungs, some people like a more full taste, some people rather have that roach so they don't burn themselves other people use clips instead. I don't think it's more than a matter of preference of the smoker.

filtration differences..

filters would make a difference in the amount of total tar molecules to thc moleculoes per hit although i'm not sure if it'd be a significant or even noticable change.

As others have said the filter most likely takes out a fair portion of THC. I usually rip a little bit off the rolling papers case and then use that as a crutch.

Cig filter or rolled up cardboard? When I roll double paper joints I put in a filter(rolled cardboard) so it's easier to roll and weed doesn't fall out the back. Sometimes when I roll a cannon I'll stick in a filter. Sometimes with pinner joints a really small filter seems to help it haul better.

Also though, the filter takes up room on the rolling paper, so less weed in there

^ This. I don't really worry about using a filter for the health of my lungs. I use a vaporizer when I'm thinking about that. I just like to smoke the joint down to the crutch so I don't have roaches hanging around. Comes back on me though when I run out of weed.

Heh, exactly dude. I used to smoke with cuts, or filters, of cardboard in them. But now I don't put anything in them, and hold my joints like cigarettes and smoke. When it gets hot, it's good for the roach, and out it goes, then into my punk skeleton ashtray so he can oversee my emergency stash while he puffs on his joint. Heh.

I've found that using hollowed out cigarettes can be useful, I usually cut the filter in half.

But .... a cone always gets me much much farther than a joint ever has.

Water filter vs material filter, water is my friend. Far better for the lungs, atleast tar wise but moisture isnt great in the lungs either.

I must be one of the only people who prefers filters!

Unless I've read the thread wrong, lol.
I just find that roaches make the joint more finnicky. And the smoke trastes awful towards the end of it, whereas I never notice this when using filters.

But hey, I love cigarettes and if weed ever became legal, I'd just buy pre-rolled ones.
Screw the "art" of the spliff, just get me goddamn baked already!! :P

I just roll a joint with a paper. I never tried to add a filter or mouth piece of any kind before.
