in six months I will have a BA in Poli Sci and a minor in philosophy. I intended this combo to go to Law school, now I'm not so sure I want to go to law school.

Anyways besides being a teacher or a lawyer, what other pratical uses in the "real world" will this expensive knowledge come in handy?

Professional politician?

Or an aide to a politician, or you could work for an activist organization or a government agency.

Try applying for jobs with the local government. (or state government if you live near the capitol)

You could also write editorials for a local newspaper. Or you could sell your soul to the devil and work as a lobbyist. :p

There are lots of things you could do with a political science degree.

You could do quite a range of things with the skills from it. The analytical skills and gathering of information and research would be attractrive to quite a range of employers. Might not be the most exciting work though.

I too majored in poli.sci. and minored in philosophy.

I graduated from law school. If you are not sure about law school, I would advise against it. It will chew you up and spit you out by the first semester. Law school was literally ten times more difficult than college.

You could look into being a city planner. It is a very interesting occupation and pays in the six figures.

study abroad, get an internship with an embassy in that country, and there is a good chance depending on the school you went to that a very cool consulting firm will pick you up. political science is highly underrated imo, and i foolishly dismissed it as impractical as an undergrad. nothing as interesting as political science is impractical if you follow your interests and get involved in stuff like international travel or volunteer work. You don't even have to go to law school afterwards to make insane money, just get an mba after your work experience and you might end up in a position that is both fun and well-salaried. like pottedmeat said, if you have any second thoughts about law school don't go because you will be tortured if your heart's not in it. Then, you will be further tortured when you work for a law firm.

You know, groups like NORML and MAPS have lobbyists as well as environmental and animal rights groups. You can find a cause you believe in and try to work lobbying for it. Might not pay as well as Big Pharma, Oil, or Tobacco, but there are good hearted lobbyists pushing good issues. To the OP, I too am about to finish up with a BA in Poli Sci. What is your emphasis? Mine is International Relations, so I'm not quite sure what I want to do with it since I have practicly no knowledge or experience in Public Administration. Defense and Intelligence is a good option for Poli Sci, especially if you have foreign language skills, which you should have somewhat with a BA. If you are a PA Poli Sci major, you can always be a bureaucrat in one of the various federal and state agencies. I'm planning on going to a SE Asian country, either Vietnam or Thailand and teach English for a year or two as soon as I graduate. I'll be able to save money to start paying back my student loans, plus have some experience to put on a resume. With a BA in a Liberal Art, you can get an entry level position at pretty much any company as they see that you can be flexible in your learning and are well rounded. Theres a lot of opportunities outside of law school.

I just got my B.A. in Criminal Justice with a minor in Political Science. My University offers an M.A. program and that's what I'm starting this fall.

I didn't pay for any of my school as an undergrad so I'm pretty debt free.

I've had a Political Science degree from Univ. of Georgia for 10 years now. I was a reporter for the local paper. That was a very interesting job. But if you're looking for big bucks, you won't find it in any form of media. My dream is to be a Television News Consultant (shoulda been a journo major, but o well). You can work in public relations, administration, lobbyist, local govt. jobs, etc. etc.

You get to post NO, FUCK YOU! in bigger font in Current Events and Politics.

Personally, I'd like to be an advocate for methadone and suboxone treatment for heroin and painkiller addicts. Or just for my particular political party. It can be a useful major if these things interest you.
