NEW YORK, March 31 (UPI) -- New York City smokers will soon pay $9 or more for a pack of cigarettes, or about $275 a month for those smoking a pack a day, health officials said.

City health department officials estimate the 62-cent federal excise tax increase, which goes into effect Wednesday, will prompt about 20,000 adult New Yorkers to quit smoking -- a response that would prevent more than 6,000 premature deaths.

"Now is the time to quit," Dr. Thomas R. Frieden, New York City health commissioner, said in a statement. "Smoking is hurting your health and your wallet. For the many New Yorkers looking to save money during these tough times, this is a great way to do it. You will feel better, your families will be safer and you will save thousands of dollars."

To help New Yorkers who want to quit, the city will offer free nicotine patches at Health and Hospitals Corp. locations and other community sites across the five boroughs, or New Yorkers can call 311.

New York City has 300,000 fewer adult smokers today than in 2002 -- thanks, in part, to price increases -- and smoking has dropped 52 percent among public high school students since 2001, Frieden said.

Woah $9 USD for the cheap, shitty brands am I guessing right? We thought it was absurd in Canada/Ontario at $10.75 CDN for pretty much the best smokes you can buy. There's some (nasty) smokes for as cheap as $5.75. Or we also have Natives from the reserves which is like $20 for 200, lol, but those taste like dirt.

I suppose this isn't price discussion, lol...But it feels really weird talking about money here!
 
its over $8 here in arkansas cause we had a state tax that kicked in last month too. Thats up from $4.75 for a pack of camel lights back in december. Black and milds are now like 2.30... Such bullshit. But luckily theres a petition going around the state to be voted on in october 2010 to legalize pot fully woohoo.
 
They should do something for april fool's some year where they tell smokers that they're raising prices to $100 a pack. :D

yeah that's me.. lol.. I buy the bag of 200 for 18 bucks though.. the bags are printed.. and are farely decent. Also in Ontario.
 
its like $5-6 down here in texas, its a good thing i only smoke whenever im at work or if im drinking
 
The cheapest pre-rolled cigarettes in Ireland are 7.15 EUR (9.50 USD) and most normal brands cost 8.10 EUR (10.75 USD). They are expected to go up again in the next budget which is in a few days:-/.

One of my boys is actually selling cartons for $25 and packs for $4...I don't know where he's getting them at but it's true. I hit him up once and it went through, but I don't feel like calling him and setting up a deal every time I need a pack of smokes. I'd rather pay the extra dollar and some change.
 
At what point do cigarette taxes become so high that the government has a vested interest in keeping people smoking to finance their budgets. Loose tobacco is raising 2600% in Michigan a true tax on the poor.
 
These vice taxes make no sense after a certain point. Eventually people will just stop buying whatever it is they are taxing (or go to the black market) and the revenue stream dries up. Idiotic. This shit is just kicking the poor when they're down.
