A £40 torch that traps clubbers using drugs
Tuesday, March 31, 2009

Police are shining 'magic torches' into clubbers' faces to check for tiny traces of cocaine – and now employers and parents are being encouraged to follow suit.

Forces across the country are buying the £40 torches which can make any microscopic particles of cocaine or amphetamine that are invisible to the naked eye appear bright green.

Officers say the UV lights work as well as ones costing ten times as much and make it easy to spot the tinpni.spoololife.nfoiest traces of cocaine on nasal hair.

But drug campaigners have suggested the UV lights could be unlawful.

Claudia Rubin, head of policy at drugs charity Release, said: 'Searching someone's nostrils could amount to a cavity search and is a serious breach of individual privacy.

Police in Blackburn are the latest to use the torches allowing them to block revellers from parties and nightclubs. Sgt Alan Clayton said: 'This simple piece of equipment will have a big impact on drug use in pubs and clubs.

'Traces of cocaine are also left on the cheeks and chin that are not visible to the naked eye and these show up bright green, too. It really is amazing.'

The torches are produced by Wrexham-based JNE Marketing, intending them to be used to show markings on stolen property.

It only realised they could be used to spot drugs when police officers starting asking about them. They will detect cocaine that is at least 87 per cent pure and 78 per cent pure amphetamine of, including some, but not all, Ecstasy pills.

Sales and marketing manager Nick Hughes said: 'I'm sure there's a lot of groups who would want to know if their employees or family members were taking illegal substances.'

But Ms Rubin added 'If random drug testing is not written into the employee's contract, the employer has no right to request a drug test.'

"This simple piece of equipment will have a big impact" on the arrest and incarceration of otherwise harmless citizens. My god, just leave people the fuck alone!

"They will detect cocaine that is at least 87 per cent pure and 78 per cent pure amphetamine of, including some, but not all, Ecstasy pills."

Good thing you'll never find 87% pure cocaine on the street.

thats some pretty pure shit they'd have to be snorting to have it show up. 87% pure coke and 78% pure amp.

its a UV light... wooo big technology.

i'd just get a uv marker and write a big fuck you on my face..

as with the other article on the front page about the false positive field tests, this is another useless tool in the war on drugs, just going to get more people in trouble over flimsy evidence.

i wonder if nasal sprays would glow in uv light?

haha. That's a mad idea. Draw a little moustache and beard that lights up when they shine the torch on you.

And yeah seriously, what the fuck are they trying to prove with this? Honestly. What does it achieve?

Thats what i was thinking. Plus in the UK its even less pure since they are having a massive shortage right now.

I read somewhere that the average cocaine in the UK is somewhere between 18-25% pure.

From bitter recent experience I can surely believe this :\

At first I got rather worried reading this article and then reached the bit about the torch only picking up cocaine of 87% purity or higher.

Now I'm OK with them.

The day I get a bag of 90% purity coke in the UK will be a day for such celebration that if I go out to a club it'll be all finished in the line before I even reach the front door. =D

I don't see how purity plays into it. I mean coke is coke, how does it differentiate between someone who has a lot of residue that came at like 15% purity and someone who doesn't have as much residue but is snorting shit straight from Columbia?

Someone tries shining a light into my face like that they better be prepared to eat it.

Civil rights used to mean something, ya know?

And how many different things will also glow under UV light?

Seems like there would be a ton of variables that could cause false positives to light up on one's face..........

I hate this shit! You can be the best employee in the whole world, but then they pry their eyes into the contents of your piss, and now possibley nose, find out about drugs and fire you because your a poor worker and unreliable or whatever garbage they pull. The fact that they even need to do this to find druggies to fire them, should be proof that drugs aren't that bad. Employers should fire people for being bad workers, not lifestyle. As far as I'm concerned it's just as bad as firing someone for believing in an obscure religion instead of Christianity

This is a good example of how the drug war is just a pretext for those sadists at the capital to create a police state..

with a few alterations, I can see this as being a good way of testing cocaine purity on the street. Good job, JNE Marketing.

does it work with ketamine? and 2c-x? and kanna? and all the other obscure drugs?

I wasn't aware that pure cocaine 'glew' under UV light. I mean it can't be anything else, but a quick google search brings up nothing about it reacting that way under UV just this same article. Can anyone explain how this thing works?
