QUEENS, New York (KABC) -- Some shoppers in Queens, New York, got an alarming surprise when they bought peppers at a neighborhood market. When they cut into the peppers, they were shocked to find plastic bags of cocaine.
A handful of customers bought the drug-filled vegetables at the Liberty Avenue store in the Ozone Park section of the city, according to police.
"That's really scary," one shopper said. "You open your pepper and see cocaine."
"Somebody's got to be held accountable," another added. "That's not right."
Once police got word, investigators shut down the store to investigate on Monday night. Despite numerous requests for an interview, employees say the only comment from the owner is no comment.
At this point, police are not investigating the store. They're more interested in the company that sold the peppers to the store, thinking someone there may have put the drugs inside.
Police will only confirm which store was involved, and that it was some kind of vegetable, but another source confirms it was peppers being used to hide the cocaine.
