Suspected drug death raises fears of potent heroin
12th March 2009, 6:00 WST
Fears are growing that a potent batch of heroin has hit Perth’s streets after the suspected drug overdose death of a woman whose body was discovered in a toilet at Glendalough train station yesterday.
Police were called to the station at 6am after the 24-year-old woman’s body was found by a passer-by.
There were five heroin overdoses in Perth at the weekend.
While details surrounding the woman’s death are unclear, it is believed she overdosed on drugs, possibly heroin.
The police coronial investigation unit is looking into her death.
Five people, three of whom were women, were found unconscious around Perth on Friday night after injecting themselves with heroin. This has raised concerns a strong, possibly lethal, batch of the drug had become available in the city.
Professor Steve Allsop, of the National Drug Research Institute, said the overdoses — in different parts of the city at different times — were indicative of a potent batch of heroin. “This does happen from time to time, as people who have been using a low grade of the drug over a period of time suddenly get a higher quality and use an amount they think is safe,” he said.
“They tend to run into trouble.” Professor Allsop said he was surprised when he was told five people had overdosed in one night. “Usually they (paramedics) get one or two incidents. To get five in one night is very rare,” he said.
The wave of overdoses began on Friday evening when paramedics were called to resuscitate a man on a Beaconsfield street. A female user was found in North Perth just before midnight.
By 2.30am on Saturday, three more people had overdosed.
