Death Penalty - for or against

death penalty

Against. I'd prefer the guilty to spend the rest of their waking lives incarcerated where they can truly reflect on what they have done (and get assraped every two months..I keed.)

I'm for the death penalty in certain cases, as of right now I feel its being used fairly properly. I do agree with what some people said in that with some people its more of a punishment to be kept alive and behind bars for your entire life than to be killed within 5 years of conviction.

However, with certain individuals, mostly high ranking gang members and people like them. I feel its better to kill them off and get their influence out of the way. Because a large portion of these people live lives behind bars that are nearly as high quality of a life they would have outside of the prison system. They get thousands of dollars in their commissary weekly due to illegal activities that they are a part of, they get access to TV, internet in some cases, drugs, alcohol, and just about anything else they could possibly want. They have no fear of getting in trouble because hey, they're already in prison for life, what could happen? So they continue to run their organizations without any worry or fear. I say kill them, and let the people who actually fear prison live their lives behind bars and then you've got the best punishment for both types.

I am concerned about posting here because this thread should be in a different forum. But, people seem to be debating this seriously, so I'll add my two cents.

The death penalty has so many flaws both in practice and in theory that I continue to be surprised by the number of people who support it.

People on death row, or worse, already killed by the death penalty, have been shown to be innocent. Isn't that reason enough to abolish this form of punishment and revenge? Note that I did not say "this form of Justice." The death penalty isn't about justice, it is about revenge. Someone commits murder, so we want to kill him? How does that make sense? If a person stabs someone, do we stab him as punishment? If someone starts a fire, do we light him on fire as punishment?

Besides, if someone kills my friend or family member, and I wish to murder the perpetrator, I am not legally allowed to do so. If I did, I would be prosecuted for the crime.

Yet the state is entitled to kill the perpetrator? Why does the state have more of as right to exact vengeance than I do? I am the one who had a friend or family member taken away from me. If I cannot take revenge on the killer, nor should the state.

When did killing people become an acceptable way for a civilized society to deal with its criminals?

The arguments in favor of the death penalty are rather weak. Some say it is an effective deterrent. This has been shown to be false. People who commit murder aren't thinking about the consequences. They either don't expect to be caught, or they are reacting emotionally and therefore not thinking rationally.

Do you really believe people in the middle of committing a murder stop and say to themselves, "I am going to go through with this crime because if I get caught it's just life in prison, no big deal. But I'd discontinue with this murder if I knew I would get the death penalty?"

Some say, "Why should be pay to keep them alive?" This is NOT a valid reason for killing people.

Some say, "We need to protect society from these people. What if they get a life sentence but escape?" This is not a valid reason for the death penalty. It IS a valid reason for improving prison security and making sure prisoners do not escape. Did anyone ever escape from Alcatraz??

And of course, let's not forget hat the death penalty is not applied fairly, and there is no way to ensure that it ever will be.

I have very mixed opinions about it. I think it depends on the circumstance of the crime that lead to the conviction. With the way the US economy is, it makes much much more sense to execute them. It costs somewhere between 50-60 thousand dollars a year to maintain an individual in prison. I think that there are too many variables in regards to the death penalty to make a true 'just' system.

Two very good reasons to be pro death penalty.

against.. for cost reasons, trial and police errors, and of course the whole value of human life thing which is not as important to me, but i'd rather them suffer in prison than get the luxury of death

i really love pro-lifers who are pro-death penalty

lawl

DP : i think he said prison should be better

better? how could it be any better for a leader of the aryan brotherhood or similar criminal organization? no fear whatsoever, you do what you want, basically when you want, and you have any amenity you'd have outside of prison. the reason I say kill them is simply because by keeping them alive you're allowing them to continue running their multi-million dollar enterprise from inside a federally funded free apartment. why should I pay for that?

im against death penalty but i guess i would enjoy seeing the op being executed with impaling lol

just replace "and making sure prisoners do not escape." by "and making sure prisoners do not continue running their multi-million dollar enterprise from inside a federally funded free apartment.

and i guess that would be fjones reason to invalidate your post.

ninjy-poo: If the highest security prison in the entire country (I.E. the ADX supermax in Florence, Colorado) cannot suppress the leaders of these gangs I doubt it can be done.

now that is only while maintaining the "basic human rights" that this country must give to these "people" I put it in quotes because I don't consider them people so much as animals. If the government would stop pussyfooting around with these highest priority inmates and just A) wack 'em or B) drop this PC "human rights" bullshit and give them what they deserve (which is death, so option A and B are essentially the same thing, really.) then I think they could really do some good in regards to keeping the prisons safer for the general population and also stopping a large portion of crime outside of prisons.

against, but with exception. if someone fully admits guilt and chooses to be euthanized, i see no reason to go against that decision and keep him/her in prison for the rest of their life, if they are given a life sentence. but that's the only time that i see it as a waste of money to keep the person alive.

future scenario

well its being going the other way around since forever
we evolved from the tribe mentality
we ended up with concepts like human rights
countries who still use it are mostly backward country i wouldnt live in

shit brow = Retains death penalty

jugging it from its evolution,
i think that, as a whole, its a matter of cultural mentality evolving toward a greater good
a better way

edit : and i say "as a whole" cuz im not sure what is my stance about it, i think that some people should be killed (tho not in a painful manner)..
