Nebraska lawmakers vote to ban hallucinogenic drug
By The Associated Press
Friday, Feb 20, 2009 - 05:21:51 pm CST

Nebraska lawmakers voted Friday to ban the hallucinogenic drug Salvia divinorum.

The bill (LB123) from state Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber makes it a felony to possess or sell salvia. Possession would be punishable by up to five years in prison; selling it, up to 20 years. A similar bill didn’t reach a final vote last year.

Salvia divinorum is generally smoked, but it can be chewed or made into a tea.

Called by such nicknames as Sally-D, Magic Mint and Diviner’s Sage, salvia is a hallucinogen that gives users an out-of-body sense of traveling through time and space or merging with inanimate objects.

Unlike such hallucinogens as LSD or PCP, however, salvia’s effects are shorter, generally up to an hour.

huh, so we finally jumped on the ban-wagon. Good thing I tried it while it was legal. I hear the owner of the shop I got it from was even prosecuted over this b.s.:(

Up to 20 years for selling?! What the hell???? Doesn't that seem a bit over the top....

Plus it lasts up to an hour? Uh...Maybe if you chew the leaves...but even then 5-10 min top of peak trip, maybe another 10-15 til baseline. Argh I hate all the misinformation on drugs.

Why make salvia illegal? It has zero potential for abuse, and no negitave effects as far as I can see.

Its funny how some drugs dont fit the criteria for "illegal" at all, but they make them illegal anyway. I bet salvia will be shedule 1 in the next 5 years.

son of a bitch! the last time i was there was last September and i read about it in the paper...they had some seriously messed up information. totally skewed.

why NE, why???

lol, the fact that they are making it illegal is just going to cause a spike in its use, most people don't even like it

you guys gotta stop posting shit like this, my fuckin forehead is starting to hurt from banging on my computer desk so often

Honestly though, who would sell salvia? The shit is so retarded that I can't imagine there being a huge blackmarket for it. And really, 1 hour? that's just some fucking bs right there.

You are completely right. How absurd that the bans that are designed to stop people from doing an unpopular drug will increase it's popularity. That's the drug war for you...:X

Check out the comments, looks like most see it as the "feel-good, knee jerk" legislation that it is. They are really going out of their way to ban something that has few return users. The main joy it seems that comes out of salvia is watching and videotaping your friends freaking out on it and posting it on youtube. What happened to basing policy on empirical evidence?!

i'm from nebraska and i really don't care.. salvia was the worst drug i've ever done...

So you only care if they ban the drugs you like? Would you like everyone else to take that same approach? We will never get anywhere towards any drug policy reform with that attitude.

shit like this just doesn't make sense anymore...i hope the fed. gov't won't make any more drugs illegal. goddamn ignorant state politicians.:X

That's not the issue. ALL drugs should be legal for you to use in your own home, not while driving, working, or other important tasks, such as child care!

Salvia, while not useful for you, is enjoyed by many as a VERY powerful (and mostly harmless) tool. It's not a party drug. It's not a social drug.

Yeah, seriously, if you care about your right to use the substances you enjoy, you might want to consider opposing the criminalization of all drugs, not just the ones you like.

If you were a beer drinker and win were outlawed, would you really sit back and say, "Well, I don't care, I don't drink wine, I drink beer?"

i'm not for it, i'm against the bill..what i was saying is a dont really care as salvia is a foolish drug, you dont "learn" anything from it like other psychs.. its just a mindfuck that is unpleasant and feels somewhat evil to me

I understood you exactly. But what I am trying to say is, as a drug user in general, you should care, because an attack on any drug is an attack on all drugs.
