A quick question about Grapefruit Juice

it's supposed to, but the effects are pretty subjective. If you wan tto do it right, go buy some grapefruits and make your own juice, then eat the pulp in the used grapefruits. otherwise, dont bother.
 
Yes, it contains an inhibitor of CYP3A4, which is responsible for the N-demethylation of codeine, morphine & related morphinans to their nor-derivatives (which are effectively inactive).

As to whether you'll notice any subjective effects, well that's the big question. Depends upon how much grapefruit juice is ingested & how much opiate...
 
If I remember correctly, the substance in grapefruits that acts as an enzyme inhibitor is sold in a standardized extract as a health supplement. I'm sure there are other posts about said substance, which I'll refrain from naming, but I don't recommend that kind of thing.
 
I've had success with potentiating hydro- and oxycodone with GFJ (for the record: 16 oz. juice 30 mintues before ingesting 120mgs oxycodone), but I always drink organic, fresh-squeezed juice. I make it myself actually because it's cheaper and it's simple.

I've read on BL that the processed stuff isn't as effective. I don't know about grapefruit supplements. I think I've mostly seen Grapefruit Seed Extract in the stores which sounds like a different animal.

I am quite new to these forums and I'm not sure of the etiquette yet when it comes to posting information that is potentially dangerous to other users. I was probably being overly cautious though, since the information is a wiki search away anyhow. One of the enzyme inhibiting chemicals in grapefruit is call Naringin, and it is sold in what seems to be a standardized extract from citrus by one of the largest mail order vitamin retailers in the US.

If you search Naringin at bluelight, you'll probably get more information than you've ever wanted.

Just to add, I've never attempted potentiating opiates, but I did once drink a liter of store-bought grapefruit juice an hour before ingesting a benzodiazepine. I did this because I have a natural (not tolerance derived) resistance to most synthetic GABA sleep aids. As far as I could tell, there was no difference in effect at all, but that might have been because of my resistance anyway.

Speaking of potentiating opiates and potentially dangerous information, I remember reading that some antihistamines or anticholinergic drugs (don't know the names) strengthen certain opiate effects. Again, I advise against even thinking about attempting to mix those two unless already in a prescribed preparation like some cough syrups.

BTW, please correct me on my etiquette if I am indeed not supposed to be posting information like this.
 
I tried GFJ and White GFJ so many times in the past trying to potentiate my opiates and never got any worth while results, don't waste your time on this nasty shit.... if you wanna really make your opioid 'stronger' then your best bet is to take more of your opiate of choice.

Five patients on chronic opiate medication to treat low-back and leg pain were determined to have developed opiate tolerance on the basis of their failure to obtain significant relief (rated on a subjective pain scale and by the degree of straight leg-raising they were able to endure) after receiving 30 mg of morphine administered i.v. in divided doses over 35 min. After these patients' diets had been supplemented with 4 g/day of L-tryptophan for 2-9 weeks, they achieved significant relief from pain when the opiate tolerance test was re-administered, and were able to lead more active lives while reducing their daily opiate intake. chronic opiate administration probably reduces the serotonin turnover rate in the central nervous system; it may be that this is reversed by loading with the serotonin precursor, L-tryptophan.

what about L-Tryp in combination with an CYP3A4 inhibitor ;) ?
 
Grapefruit juice has been shown to increase the oral bioavailability of many drugs, such as cyclosporine or saquinavir, by inhibiting intestinal metabolism. This was proven because no interaction was seen when saquinavir or cyclosporine are administered intravenously and grapefruit juice was given orally. This effect appears to be specific to CYP3A enzymes and P-glycoprotein transporters that are found in the gut wall of the intestine since grapefruit juice does not appear to significantly affect enzymatic liver activity.

From what i have understood, the increase of effect of dextromethorphan by grapefruit juice come from the fact that the bioavilability of oral dextromethorphan is low (~10% ), due to P-gp activity in gut wall.
Oral bioavailability of codeine or hydrocodone is high, and as enzymatic liver activity is not affected by grapefruit juice, i guess that codeine or hydrocodone cannot be potentiated by GFJ.
 
personal experence with grapefruit juice with benzos and most opiates consuming 30min-1 hour prior to taking the benzo or opiate makes the effects last noticiable longer. it doesnt make it hit harder if thats what your looking for increase your dosage. but i like it because it means i can save my pharms for another day instead of redosing
 
Personally I notice a difference if I eat my opioids or kratom with GFJ. Usually I pre drink some juice 20 minutes before I take the (inset fun stubstance here)

I really haven't tried this with many other substances, however I plan to try it with others and will report back with results.

How DARE you speak of grapefruit juice like that? :X

I'm feeling pretty good from the poppy seed tea I drank a few hours ago right now and I just ate half of a ruby red grapefruit, about to drink some gfj as well... just for the hell of it.
