5-HTP and Pot

That is how much is in one capsule. I got the bottle from Walgreens (although next time I will get it from another pharmacy where I noticed it was about half the price...).

Ahhh my bad. I just looked at the bottle and I mixed up the numbers. It was a bottle of 30 100mg capsules.

Was gonna say, the largest I've seen was 200mg a pop, but that was a time release version at GNC. Regular ones come in 50mg or 100mg,

Cheers mate. Why is it not available out here do you think?

Its legal, I work at a Vitamin store and we used to stock it. They can't sell it over the counter but its totally legal to buy over the internet. Just Google it, anything over $25 for 60 caps is bullshit.

I can't say I'm experienced with this combo, but I have just experimented with it yesterday. Time log (not real time) and all for your convenience.

11:15-I ingested 4 pills of 50mg 5-htp+some alfalfa. I was sitting for someone trying salvia for the first time while waiting for 5-htp to kick in.
12:30-I start feeling "dreamy", so I prepare a hookah with good pile of bag-bottom shake and some apple-flavoured tobacco.
13:00?-Pretty normal for weed
-Here I lost track completely, wrote some insane shit, listened to music, meditated, etc.-
16:00- Pretty close to baseline, was very fun and quite introspective. Visual distortion was enhanced, more immersive mentally, but also more tension maybe? I don't normally grind my teeth when high...
21:30- I go to sleepand went to sleep; I'm tired, but not burnt out.
5:45 this morning- I wake up very refreshed, not dehydrated as I usually do (even without pot, I probably sleep with my mouth open because it's parched every morning).

So all in all, I think 5-htp made the high more introspective and more tense, but also worked more to attenuate the adverse effects. I usually wake up late and tired if I smoke in the day, and with 5-htp my sleep was deep and refreshing.

For the O.P. what I would also recommand on top of 5-HTP that I know has worked for me is Valerian.

BTW, Don't go overboard with the herbs. Seriously now too many herbs aren't good as you never know the implications.

I can't afford 5-htp and melatonin right now so I got the cheaper of the two. Melatonin has helped me sleep but it makes my dreams quite real atm (haven't been smoking for a few months and its getting to me) I shoulda gone with the 5htp:p

As a potentiator for marijuana, or just for relaxing affects?

What have you found to be the effects of Valerian alone and with pot?

Just wanted to add an update to the thread:

I picked up a bottle of 30 x 100mg 5-htp caps about two weeks ago, and have been taking about 2 per day since. Along with adding noticeable depth to my marijuana experiences, it's helped a lot with some minor/seasonal depression I was experiencing. It's not like an artificial feeling of happiness/numbness (as I experienced with SSRI's several years ago when I went through much more serious issues), but the 5-htp has really helped bring my baseline state up from "general malaise" to "comfortable and content."

Interestingly enough, it does somewhat delay orgasm, very much like other anti-depressants I've used.

use 5 htp with a good amount of caution when consumed on a regular basis....especially when you smoke weed with it. a couple of years ago i bought a good bit of 5 htp and would take some every couple of hours probably about 300-400 mg a day. eventually i started getting very nauseous even when i smoked weed, and when i would try to eat while high i'd vomit on occassion...

also...the dreaming was insane. i couldnt sleep well at night because i would wake up 3-5 times a night after each dream because it was too real, it only took about 10 minutes to fall back asleep.
i overdid it...

btw this is off topic slightly but toward the end of my use 99% of my dreams were completely lucid....from the beginning. i used 5 htp for about 6 months daily.

5htp is the precursor to serotonin basically. serotonin controls sleep, mood, diet and pain tolerance. taking it often is not good as it is rumored to causse serotonin syndrome after long term use. it regulates the diet and you will not be able to eat as much. Its used as a natural alternative to anti-depressants along with st johns wort and is also used as a sleep aid, like melotonin. I could see how the feelings of weed and the sleepiness/mild natural euphoria would elevate a weed high but be careful in dosing. 300 mgs tops at one time or in one day. mix with weed and should be enjoyable as long as you dont eat too much (the 5htp's affects on diet make eating a lot very nauseating, trust me i know from experience :|

^ If it's legal over the counter in your country, you'll find it in the supplement area of your supermarket or health food store. It's an amino acid.

Be careful with this supplement, folx. I've experienced the nausea you all have talked about. That's because serotonin receptors in the stomach get tickled, if the pill's contents hang around there long enough to get converted to serotonin. That's why it's recommended that you take no more than 100mg, on an empty stomach, at bedtime. I would not make a habit of taking doses larger than 100mg.

Do not take 5htp with St. John's Wort.

I've found the effects on weed to be subtle, but noticeable. The high feels more profound. Not necessarily more euphoric. I have found that 5htp does not help reduce weed tolerance greatly, though.

All in all, I'd say this is too risky a supplement to take regularly in liberal doses, JUST to enhance the marijuana high.

I believe it restores serotonin in the brain.. serotonin regulates sleep, so there could be some benefit.

Melatonin is probably a better choice however as it is directly used for insomnia.

5HTP is not available in Australia as I dont think it meets our guidelines for a 'safe' supplement.. Although I think you can get it if you poke around. In Melbourne Ive heard there are third party health food stores that sell it etc.

five htp is more sedating when taken at night than melatonin, usually around the 100 mg range

I tried taking 100mg of 5HTP before going to sleep last night. I had smoked a bit (not too much to a frequent smoker, but enough to get me pretty damn high) around 7 or 8 hours earlier and got around 11 hours of sleep. Today I feel great and completely sober. I should continue to experiment with this.

5-HTP with weed, isn't too bad in my experience. It makes it more calm, but it takes away from the psychadelic effect. Don't get as much of that deep creative, contemplative thinking, but also less frequent racing paranoid and anxious thoughts, and reduces anxiety brought on by weed. Theirs more of a mood lift, and more pain relief. It makes me a more sleepy though with less stimulation, and theirs less of an emotional impact from music and I don't really get the munchies that bad. One time the combo made me almost puke, but it was on an empty stomach.

It also helps greatly with withdrawals from pot, but makes the loss of appetite more severe.

I've found 5-htp to be as effective as melatonin for transient insomnia, if not more. 5-HTP is a precursor to both serotonin and melatonin. Though melatonin is probably a better choice for chronic insomnia, as their would be less of an addiction.

MJ is also known to increase melatonin levels greatly, accounting for the vivid dreams after toking. They're even more vivid when I take melatonin also.

IIRC (although I have no citation for this), cannabis releases melatonin, but does not induce its production. Thus after chronic cannabis usage melatonin is depleted and "burn out" sets in.
