Opioids What causes opiate hangovers?

Wow, I must admit I've never experienced an opiate hangover.

I've been addicted (pretty mildly) to pod tea, but for a damn long time, something like 7 months. Something wacky about pod tea, it seems like rather than suddenly coming off it just afterglows into the next day and slowly fades to normal.

Then again that doesn't happen to me anymore, now when the high fades I feel normal for a bit and then I feel god awful when I come down all the way.

Perhaps longer acting opiates reduce this effect because they bring you down a lil' slower?

Well, headaches, nausea (sometimes vomiting), bad taste in my mouth, and a general shitty feeling -- all very similar to an alcohol hangover only worse. You mention getting ill if you do too much. Do you mean during your high or after? What I am talking about is different from the nausea that can hit you while you are high.

Also, as I have said, the hangovers are less of a problem when I actually have a habit. So during the times in my life when I have used daily, I didn't have hangovers.

It really seems that not everyone has a problem the next day. Could it be some sort of personal sensitivity to opiates?

Wow, worse than an alcohol hangover? That really sucks.
The main reason I started using opiates was because of the fact that I wouldn't get the shitty hangover like I did with alcohol.. plus they feel way better than alc.

The only 'hangover' type symptoms I really ever get is the bad taste in mouth and a little bit of grogginess.. and that's only if I've had a long night blowing OCs. Actually, lately I've been throwing up a LOT from oxycodone. Mostly on the comedown, but a couple of times it has gone into the next morning..

Perhaps you are sensitive to opiates.. it's quite weird that you don't get the hangovers when you use regularly- I guess your body is just getting used to the opiates being in there? I don't know. :\
Sorry I couldn't be of more help.. Maybe djsim will chime in with some sort of medical explanation. =]

it's caused by your body chemistry returning to normal after being changed by the opiate. i can't tell you the exact mechanisms, it's probably very complicated just like the alcohol hangover is quite complicated (it's more than just dehydration).

Right, the only "hangover" I ever felt was some sluggishness and major depressive symptoms over the week after the use. Mind you this was like one single use of about 60mg hydrocodone.

I always thought that this was caused by my brain stopping production of certain neurotransmitters when it was flooded by the opiate, and taking a while to turn the production back on.

I have gotten sick and have gotten hangovers and they are disticinly different for me.

I do oxycodone, plugged maybe 2-3 times a week.

Always a good dose though 75-90 mg up the butt. The next 24 i get the worst headache, nausea, throwing up, just so not well. Some stuff resembles being more dope sick but the headache is really the most painful. Being dopesick doesnt have that for me.

10+ hours asleep, go to bed while coming down NOT high, dont take huge doses. For awhile i didnt even touch opiates cause i would get so sick in the morning. But if you do, 1-2 cups of coffee, then a nice hot shower will shurely rid you of your hangover. I recently started drinking coffee, for this reason

ive never gotten any opiate hangovers. after the effects wear off i'm completely normal again. it's just chance i guess. some people get them and some don't. i know some kids who cant even take a bunch of opiates at one time or else they get all sick and shit so they have to redose their opiates.

I have had a few opiate hangovers. They are indeed worse than most alcohol hangovers I've had and I remain completely still in the dark until the early evening the next day. Dehydration is certainly a factor, but there is more at work it seems.

A few questions for those who personally know the opiate hangover:

1) Do you have any history of migraines or headaches that aren't caused from drugs/alcohol?
2.)Do you have any sinus problems?
3.)Do you drink alcohol much? With opiates at all?
4.)Is the hallmark factor the 'braincrushing' headache?

For me:
1)A handful of sickeningly terrible migraines and headaches were normal before sinus surgery.
2)As mentionted above, I have had sinus surgery because of severe sinus problems.
3)Moderately for both.
4)YES! Sometimes accompanied by vomiting.

Maybe we can find some similarities between us and narrow things down. I am really curious to see what the cause is and if preventative measures can be taken. Maybe insufflation plays a part? Maybe stomache contents? etc...

/\ Interesting, although I personally don't fit the bill at all ;) ..never had migraines, I never get headaches at all otherwise. I drink, but never with opiates stronger than codeine, and no sinus problems for me.

Ingestion is via plugging or IV, so neither should have anything to do with my head..

It's wierd though, I don't *always* get it, and size of dose doesn't seem to be a factor, so I'm thinking that for me, the headache must be dehydration caused, and if I'm more careful with fluids all I get is sleepiness/lethargy the next day, which is a nuissance but wholly bearable!

1. No
2. Yes but I only plug my pills so I dont see the relevance
3. None at all
4. YES feeling the headache right now, so painful.

1. I do get migraines/headaches. Migraines rarely.
2. No sinus problems.
3. I have stopped drinking with opiates as I found this made the hangovers much worse.
4. I would say the headache is the main factor, severe nausea when it's at its worst.

I'm intrigued that a few people mention dehydration. I tend to drink a lot of water when I use for just this reason and am pretty sure its not that. Does anyone else have the experience I have that as my tolerance grows the hangovers dwindle? About 4 years ago I had a serious heroin habit and during that time hangovers were never an issue. Now I am strictly a poppy tea/pills user and my tolerance is much less, so the hangovers are back. It seems to me to be clearly related to the bodies tolerance. I would still love to see if anyone had an answer that touched on body chemistry or solved the mystery of why some people seem lucky enough not to get hangovers.

Staring at the computer screen for fourteen hours and scratching my face. Thats what causes it.

I suffer from horrible nausea and headaches after an evening of using hydromorphone (iv). I use at about 12 pm (6-8 mg), and awake the next day at about 11 and begin my day of puking (while attempting to work :( )

I feel Xanax seems to help with headaches, but what will work for the nausea?

Anything over the counter? Would a suppository work better?

1) Do you have any history of migraines or headaches that aren't caused from drugs/alcohol? no
2.)Do you have any sinus problems? none what so ever
3.)Do you drink alcohol much? With opiates at all? rarely drink and never with opiates
4.)Is the hallmark factor the 'braincrushing' headache? yes, along with extreme nausea

I only get a "hangover" if I do a lot of dope the night before. Its only if Im like SUPER high like uncontrollable nodding, not being able to focus on something for more than 3 seconds.

When I wake up, I have a slight headache and Im a bit "cloudy." Just feeling a little weird and groggy in general. Thats pretty much the extent of it. Im not sure how long it actually lasts
because right after I get out of the shower, I snort a bag of dope.

i get an afterglow
im a heroin chipper, i only snort, and i do it like 3 days out of a week, after each day (pretty heavy session, like 5 bags spread out over the course of the day so im REALLY high for like 15 hours
then the next day i wake up and just feel the mildest bit of a high, it feels great, like il have a cigarette and itl feel even better, i love it
ive never experienced a headache or any unpleasant hangover effects

More tea, NOT the answer !!!! The head banger is worse than that of a champaign drunk. (the kind you get once and never drink the stuff again) , But because I'm in love with O , I'll give the PPT one more shot . But if it hurts me like this again, I am done with it forever.

i wouldnt call it a hangover. i would call it an afterglow, it feels awesome. so relaxing and kind of twitchy too the way you can still kind of move around and feel it tingle a little bit sometime. if i did a bunch of heroin the only hangover effect ill have is a little nausea maybe. nothing bad tho, i just might not want to eat right away when i wake up.
