The Big & Dandy Nitrous Thread

^One should NEVER inhale nitrous directly from a tank. Fill a baloon only.
Also as said before do not inhale automotive nitrous this is extremely hazardous.

Tanks just dont say "medical grade" on the side :\ they have all sorts of numbers and letters on the side that only someone from the factory in which it was made could decifer. IME nitrous tanks are blue if that helps. I've gone through many tanks myself and have been around even more and they are always blue. Of course other tanks could be blue as well.
i think restaurant grade isnt as bad either but not as pure either as medical
Nitrous oxide used in medicine is 70% N2O 30% O2 so as not to kill the patient lol.
Food grade n2o is 99% pure with traces of preservatives.

OD mods, -->PD perhaps?

Nitrous Oxide discussion belongs in Psychedelic Drugs, I'll move this there for you. It may get merged into the Nitrous Mega Thread there.

...this. The impurities in this will fuck your brain even more than nitrous ever could.

Not to mention the damage to your body, particularly your lungs.

Medical grade is the way to go, as others have said. Take care of yourself, and you will be able to enjoy nitrous for a lot longer.

either way, its all bad for you and killing brain cells.

If it's medical grade, and you're not depriving yourself of oxygen completely, then you are probably killing less then you think.

OD===>PD

You're probably buying "auto-grade" nitrous (or whatever they call it), and you're going to inhale a lot of shit like hydrogen sulfate and other toxic chemicals.
Thats why everyone is saying "medical grade" ... as in the kind used in medical settings.
If it doesn't say medical grade, it isn't medical grade.
Please get the clean kind.
Yes, auto-grade nitrous is what many people can get their hands on...
It's easy...at some auto stores you can just bring your tank in and fill it up for cheap. It sounds great, but it is NOT food-grade nitrous oxide.

It contains "stenching agents". Commonly the stenching agent used is sulfur dioxide, the reason it is added is to try and stop people inhaling it.... sulfur dioxide becomes acid when it meets with moisture (which your lung and throat linings are full of) It is considered toxic and a respiratory irritant, added to that it tastes bad.

I also read this from the link below (states that car grade nitrous often has hydrogen sulfide):
... hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is one of the most dangerous
neurtoxins there is. There have been reports of individuals going into a
sewer and not testing for H2S and being DOA after only one lung full. It
is incredibly nasty. It also causes olfactory overload with only one
breath. In other words, you get one smell then you can't smell it any more
so you don't realize that you are on your merry way to the grave. I would
never do the auto grade of nitrous but if that is the way someone wants
to go then bubble it through a lye (get it from the hardware store) and
water - about 1 heaping tablespoon per qt. of water.

I will admit, I have used car-grade nitrous out of tanks before, and gone on binges, but I will never do it again. I'm probably quite lucky that nothing terrible happened (all 5 of us had 'fished out'* at least once within a matter of 30 minutes however). I will only do food-grade nitrous.

Check this site out:
Obtaining Nitrous Oxide
It is a FAQ on the different kinds of nitrous available/purities, the tanks, the easiest ways to fill them, and other things that are interesting to read. It also includes a technique on how to PURIFY car-grade nitrous. Check it out.

It states that obtaining food/science/medical grade nitrous is kind of hard:
Success stories about obtaining nitrous fall into the following categories:
- Faking a medical/dental permit
- Faking chemical company letterhead
- Constructing catering letterhead

The latter is the best course of action. You need claim that you're a caterer and producing vast amounts of whipped cream, or that you're running an ice cream truck and that you're using the nitrous to chill the cooler. In both cases the deposit for a tank is ~300 $US, but the fill is only ~40 $US (prices circa 1994).

Moral: Don't do car-grade nitrous oxide. Find a medical supply place and obtain it that way (I am sure there are places on the internet that will sell filled tanks as well), or use whippits.

* "Fishing out" is when there is so much N2O in your bloodstream that you literally pass out for a few seconds, and flop on the floor like a fish out of water. This can be dangerous (besides the obvious lack of oxygen when you're doing that much nitrous), as I have seen people hit their heads pretty bad from falling.

I'd like to include this too, as it might not be obvious for beginners:
Be aware that tanks of compressed gas are DANGEROUS. If you knock the valve off of a large tank, it will go straight through a wall. Small tanks (~20lbs or ~2' tall) are relatively safe. Please talk to someone with some experience before playing with tanks.

NEVER PUT YOUR MOUTH ON A TANK TAP. YOU WILL FREEZE YOUR VOCAL CORDS OR POSSIBLY POP YOUR LUNGS. SERIOUSLY. FILL A BALLOON.

NEVER TAKE A TANK INTO A PARTY. BRING BALLOONS IN.

NEVER OPEN A TANK IN AN ENCLOSED SPACE (car, dorm room, etc).
Don't ever try to use a whippit without a cracker and a balloon, either. You will freeze your lungs.

^i know a place in south philly that you can go to, throw down the money for the steel, throw down somewhere between 5-8 dollars a pound, and then th row down around 200 for a license - a bunch of my friends have them - when fillin gout forms or when asked questions 2 of them said they had ice cream trucks.

i know hot to use gas saftley, i know the difference in grades, i know all of this stuff, i was just wondering what sort of tank to look for becasue their are many different kids of tanks.

i think a co2 tank will work fine.

i have an idea i bet no one's thought of.

forget the tank and buy a scientific weather balloon.

Fill up said weather balloon with nitrous.
tie a string onto it.
walk into party.
peel off the hippies humping your leg.

You could even make nitrous balloon animals! imagine wearing your awesome balloon hat around a party, then at the opportune time, cracking the end of it.

I still vote for large weather balloon.

hope you don't ruin that setup by talking on the internet about it 8)

^That's how it is synthesized at the factory and how it is shipped(in fact, ALL N2O made in legitimate factories has to be 99%+ as per US law I believe), but as I said, when it is used to anesthetize a patient, there is O2 mixed in at around 30%(33% to be as precise as possible). Other gases may be present as well but by and large it is N2O and O2.
If one was fed N2O at 99% purity through a mask(used in dentistry), oxygen deprivation would set in rather quickly and the patient would die.

You posted the same link twice btw.

nitrous after effects?

last night i did some nitrous. eleven isi brand chargers to be exact. anyway, afterward i didn't feel quite right. i have felt after effects from nitrous before so i assumed they would go away but now it's been 24 hours and i am still feeling it. i feel dizzy, it's difficult to focus, my balance seems a bit off and i have mild headache. this morning i almost hit a pedestrian while driving to work because of these effects. i have never had the effects of nitrous last this long before and it's been a while since i've done it. ive also done similar amounts before with no problems like this. anyone have any insight?

well its very common for people to get head aches after a night of nitrous. it can cause those side effects to some. every one is different

also have you eaten and gotten enough sleep since than?

im not too sure but utse, it may have been covered

I've felt kinda off after doing lots of nitrous....queasy, dizzy and just plain strange. Your best bet is to simply wait a few days, eat healthy, get some B12 supplements and get them into you, get some rest....you should be fine :)

In my view, people seem to underestimate the consequential effects of nitrous oxide binges. Three or four hits on occasion is all I consume. Even the debated long-term effects are enough to take into serious consideration, wether such a short-term high is worth the risk.

^ I tend to agree. Nitrous got boring for me very very quickly (though its nice on a strong psychedelic :))- also, I had some rather disturbing thoughts while on it, such as thinking it would be quite nice to die from the effects of nitrous :\ Not good, hence I rarely use it anymore...

thanks for all your replies thus far, i very much appreciate the help. is it really necessary to take B12 supplements after only 11 bulbs? i thought that was more for regular users. also to answer someone's question, yes i've eaten a couple of good meals and gotten a night of sleep but i still feel off. hopefully this won't last more than a few more days.

^Well, taking some B12 certainly can't hurt....depletion of B12 leads to some pretty nasty physicaln effects; I take a B supplement daily myself...
