I'm looking to pick up a gaming system this winter as my impending health issues will keep me confined to the house more and more. Anybody have any advice on which system an old fart like myself might get the biggest kick out of? I'm more of a sports gaming person than anything, however I like blowing things up as well as some racing games...My physical movement is starting to decline(back, knee, neck and shoulder) so I figure the Wii is out. Right?
So please enlighten this dying man with your expert opinions folks? What shall it be? The XBOX 360, The XBOX ARCADE, The PS3 or The Wii?

for comfort i'd say the 360 has the best controller, plus all the benefits of live (soon to have streaming netflix, too, if you get into that)

For your situation, I would actually suggest picking up the xbox 360 pro ($299). The ps3 doesn't have the biggest selection of games just yet, and if you get the Arcade you might not be able to have enough room for game patches, any games you want to DL, pretty much anything, including the new Live experience coming to your system (11/19).

Not only that but they have an amazing line up of games. Whatever your taste is. The Pro now comes with a 60g hard drive (vs the old 20gb), 2 games (Kung Foo Panda and Lego Indiana Jones), headset, pretty much everything to get you started. If you're looking for online play, I'd also suggest the wireless network adapter, 12 month subscription card, and maybe 1600 MS points to download fun arcade games. (Don't put a Credit card on the Live account, it's a bitch to get off.)

yeah.... can you tell I work at a game store?

Trancey,
Thanks for the info. I have a question though since I'm a video game moron.....How hard is it to hook up a XBOX 360 to a 42inch HD Vizio Flat Screen? I have a tv box with all sorts of ports from my HD consolidated communications DVS television box, as well as surround sound. I guess what I'm asking is................."How hard will it be to hook up?"

It isn't that hard. Just match the colors as far the plugins go. Then since you have HD, There is a little switch on the end of the cord that plugs in to the xbox that you switch over to HD. After that go to dashboard/ tv settings and set it to the specific HD that your TV can handle.

It sounds a little complicated but if you had one in front of you and you follow these directions I'm sure you could figure it out.

I use a standard definition TV. So if I'm wrong about anything or there's more to it, feel free to correct me.:)

Actually elephant that was perfect!

Jamshyd, the Arcade is the 360 without a harddrive.

And Oxy, it's incredibly easy to set up for your HD tv. You can't miss the switch on the cord itself, and once you start your system up you'll go Dashboard/Console Settings/Display and set it according to what you have. :)

I've owned all three of the consoles and I think the PS3 is the best.

Higher resolution, built in rechargeable batteries for wireless or you can use a removable cord, the controller I find more comfortable/usable, no fees to play online, built in blu-ray player, browser for internet on TV, better system interface.

The biggest "perk" to the 360 I always hear is the game selection. I've found no shortage of awesome games on the PS3. I got bored of my 360 though as it has a huge selection of FPS games but in terms of other genres it's lacking and I don't like FPS games on consoles because the controls make it awkward to precision aim.

Anyway, off to buy EndWar and Blitz: The League II for my PS3.

Oh and yeah you want to avoid the Wii if you're gonna be in physical pain.

I have all 3 systems as well. But....
To address some of the "differences" you list.
"rechargeable batteries" check. it's called wireless controller and charge dock for when you're not playing.
"you can use a removable cord" check. it's called the plug and play pack.
"the controller I find more comfortable/usable" That's down to personal preference. I don't enjoy the ps3 controller because it feels flimsy, weighs next to nothing. I like something with a little weight to it because it feels more sturdy. Fits my hands better.
"no fees to play online" tuche. But you also have to deal with massive lag and their crappy servers that can't handle good multiplayer online yet.
"better system interface" That's also a personal preference. Not to mention on Wed. xbox is giving us a better interface that's a mix of the wii, ps3, and current interface.

Game selection? lacking in genres anything other than FPS? Come on. Seriously? the 360 has a great selection of racing games, and when it comes to sports games as he's looking for, those come on all of the systems usually.

But you know.... I'm just taking what this in particular person is looking for into consideration.

So you have to flip out batteries as they die and put them in a charger and this also costs more.

Add on $30 (charger), $40 (controller) to the price of the system.

Cool, didn't know. The PS3 comes with it and you don't have to "charge" the cable for it to work because it's not a pretend battery with a wire attached like the 360 version.

Add on $20 to the price of the system.

You obviously don't have the Dual Shock controllers then cause it's the perfect weight. I know what you're saying about the originals but that is old now.

If you really have a PS3 I highly recommend it. The only reason the 360 controller was heavier is that it features the same vibration components.

"no fees to play online" tuche. But you also have to deal with massive lag and their crappy servers that can't handle good multiplayer online yet.

I play GTAIV with 16 people and there's rarely lag. I've played RSLV2 with 16 players and again rarely lag. Not sure what you're talking about.

No one is ever going to convince me paying for online play the 360 gives you anything better than the PS3. I've played both systems online extensively and noticed absolutely no difference.

"better system interface" That's also a personal preference. Not to mention on Wed. xbox is giving us a better interface that's a mix of the wii, ps3, and current interface.

Cool, better meaning what? At least my better is based on something that exists already. Also, isn't the fact that they're redoing the interface kind of indicative of it sucking?

I found the racing games on the 360 sucked ass. True the sports game are for both consoles. However, the main focus of the 360 is FPS titles, you can't deny that.

Anyway I guess if you add $100 to the price of your 360 you can mimic the PS3 controller perks but it still won't be as good because you'll be switching out batteries and the "plug and play" thing needs to be charged to work as well. Compared to the PS3 where you just plug a cord into the controller or unplug it it's a lot more hassle. With the PS3 your controller can be going dead and you plug it in and start charging without even stopping play.

So in the end you can buy a 360 Pro for $299 and add $100 in additional hardware to have the same capabilities as a $400 PS3 except it still won't have a blu-ray player and you'll be paying monthly to play online.

Well, I purchased the 360 yesterday, but will have to wait until Christmas to start playing. In the meantime I'll be buying and receiving the extras that I'll need to be up to snuff with everyone else on here with their more than generous insight into my dilema of what to buy. Thanks for your input folks and when I get my act together maybe we can hook up for a little online fun.

^^ I suggest you buy Halo 3/Dead Rising/GTA4 as far as FPS titles go. Not sure what good sports/racing games there are for the 360.

fifa 09 is beautiful

and i've actually got a partial hang of it's very tricky realistic controls.

dead rising and gtaiv are not fps. i'd suggest the call of duty games for fps.

Good point I meant shooters. I'd suggest not using a console for FPS ;)

First Person Shooter = FPS

And really Call of Duty 4 is where it's at for that.
For racing: Project Gotham Racing
And for sports. I don't know cause all sports games are crap.
