Should it be taken with vit b 6 or will that cause it to metabolize to 5HT prior to crossing the BBB?

I usually take a B-50 or B-100 complex with it, or during the same days I use it at least.

B6 activates the enzyme that breaks down 5-htp in the gut to serotonin.
serotonin does NOT pass the Blood brain barrier.

5-htp is best taken on a empty stomach (atleast 3 hours after last meal, 30min before your next meal) by it self.

Green Tea extract with 50% EGCG will work similary to carbidopa. it will inhibit that enzyme resonsible in breaking down 5-htp before it reaches the brain.

200mg 50% EGCG with 100-200mg 5-htp is probably the best combination...

otherwise. take >90% pure 5-htp sublingulary or via insuffilation.

i nevr take 5-htp orally without GreenTea Extract

I can't stand green tea personally so dunno if there's another option. I also found taking 5-htp on an empty stomach makes me severely nauseous.

^ White tea has plenty of EGCG too, and it tastes much better.

you dont have to typically drink the green tea extract

just cap it up and swallow :)
or wrap it up in tissue and swallow, thats what i did when i didnt have caps and i had to eat 10 chmicals at once in the morning

This paper will give you some clues...

Pharmacology & Therapeutics 109 (2006) 325– 338

Erick H. Turner, Jennifer M. Loftis, Aaron D. Blackwell

Abstract
This paper reviews the preclinical and clinical evidence regarding the use of the dietary supplement 5-hydroxytryptophan (5-HTP) for the treatment of depression. In the absence of supplementation with exogenous 5-HTP, the amount of endogenous 5-HTP available for serotonin synthesis depends on the availability of tryptophan and on the activity of various enzymes, especially tryptophan hydroxylase, indoleamine
2,3-dioxygenase, and tryptophan 2,3-dioxygenase (TDO). Factors affecting each of these are reviewed. The amount of 5-HTP reaching the central nervous system (CNS) is affected by the extent to which 5-HTP is converted to serotonin in the periphery. This conversion is controlled by the enzyme amino acid decarboxylase, which, in the periphery, can be blocked by peripheral decarboxylase inhibitors (PDIs) such as carbidopa. Preclinical and clinical evidence for the efficacy of 5-HTP for depression is reviewed, with emphasis on double-blind, placebo-controlled (DB-PC) trials. Safety issues with 5-HTP are also reviewed, with emphasis on eosinophilia myalgia syndrome (EMS) and serotonin syndrome.

Are there any caffeine free preperations of green tea containing this?

As one sip of caffeine, and I am not having a fun time.

^ Try NSI Green Tea extract. It's stardardized to 45% EGCG, and only 2% caffeine. It's also got a lot of polyphenols and catechins.

Caffeine from tea? If not, then I suggest you try it at least(or the extract). There is scientific evidence supporting what is generally well known about green tea being relaxing.
Inhibiting Effects of Theanine on Caffeine Stimulation Evaluated by EEG in the Rat
the results suggested that theanine has an antagonistic effect on caffeine’s stimulatory action at an almost equivalent molar concentration...On the other hand, the excitatory effects were shown in the rat i.v. administered 1 and 2 μmol/kg (0.174 and 0.348 mg/kg) b.w. of theanine alone. These results suggested two effects of theanine, depending on its concentration.
Inconclusive, I know, but perhaps it's worth a shot in your case. Now I wonder how much l-theanine one could expect to be in a cup of green tea. It isn't even listed on the extract labels I've been reading recently.

Tech Kinetics, either you didn't read the thread, or you know something we don't. If it's the latter, please spit it out.

EGCG is a decarboxylase inhibitor?

I haven't been able to elicit with any search string any papers avouching that notion and, further, even if it were an inhibitor of AAAD, since it can permeate the blood brain barrier, using it to increase intracerebral concentrations of serotonin is pretty much idiocy.

It might make sense to deprive yourself of B6 for a number of days, take your 5-HTP and then follow that up with some B6 a half of an hour later or something. As far as I can tell, though, 5-HTP is a waste of time. (at least for me)

Edit: Oops, this thread is a fucking year old. You certainly live up to your login, The Reanimator.
