Times iz tuff right now, so how to save money?

This thread is for any and all - big or small - tips for saving money.

Inspiration came from our broadband contract (which happened to be with Virgin and was previously very reasonably priced) was up and the first month of the implied new contract jumped to fukkin sixty fukkin quid a fukkin month 8o

After a little research we’ve decided to switch to Sky for around 24 pound a month. If we’d just caught it before the contract ended we’d’ve saved over thirty quid :!

Over to you, folks: save us all some pennies ✊✊✊
 
There's a shit load of videos on Youchube covering this subject, You've probably seen many of them.

Unfortunately a lot of them all say exactly the same super obvious things; like cancel unused subscriptions and memberships for example, that one always gets mentioned first. :rolleyes:

Now, whenever I hear that as point 1, I stop watching, as from experience it means that the entirety of the rest of the video, will also just be covering the same old points, that everyone else covers. :sleep:

There's many other points besides the subscriptions and memberships that always gets mentioned too.

If I can find a couple of the more original videos I've seen, that stood out for covering the subject in an original, different, or better way, I'll post them.

The problem is that my liked videos and watch history is absolutely rammed, so it may be very difficult to find the relevant ones, as they'll be like needles in a haystack.

A personal opinion, and method of mine, is that you can save a lot of money by totally cancelling cable or satellite TV subscriptions to providers such as Sky or Virgin Media.. All main 5 terrestrial channels do "catch up" services that you can stream online for free. Apart from the BBC's Iplayer, that you have to legally pay the licence fee to watch, obviously. I genuinely don't watch anything on Iplayer, nor any BBC live streaming, so I also save £180 a year, because I don't legally need a TV licence, as I don't watch anything from the BBC, nor any "live television broadcasts" from anything that could be considered a TV channel. Many of the bigger (in addition to the traditional top 5 terrestrial channels) cable TV channels probably also do catch up streaming services, but I cannot be sure about that, as it's not something I've looked into in any depth, nor at any recent time, but IIRC I have watched catch up streaming for free from at least one Cable TV channels 'catch up TV', streaming website, at some point in the past. I think by this stage that more of these tend to be pay for services, as opposed to the free ones you get from channel 4, channel 5, and ITV, for example.

I find more than enough to watch on youtube, (although sadly the overall quality of the content is getting much worse of late, with the mass proliferation of AI slop, and the use of AI narration, which is also intensly annoying and offputting,) streaming the catch up services provided by the non-BBC channels, and any films or TV box-sets I want to watch are generally super easy to download completely free using P2P torrent services.

It's been in my extremely long 'to do book' (I have so many things I'd like to do, but don't get round to actually doing a fraction of them, that I use notebooks to keep track of them, not just paper lists) to get a Bluray DVD player and to start frequenting the charity shops to start building a collection of any of the more obscure movies or boxsets that you cant get on the torrent sites, or sometimes only in pretty low quality. I'd also like to do more of this for music CDs. There seems to be a resurgence of people doing this for TV series, movies, and music, as people are getting fed up of digital subscriptions and purchases that can remove any title from your collection at any time. Once you own a physical DVD or CD, you own it for life, obviously. And no one can take it away from you. Charity shops used to sell CDs, DVDs, and Blurays extremely cheaply, but the word is that they are starting to jack up their prices a great deal. So it's no longer so easy to get great bargains in many charity shops, but some still do, and long may those last, hopefully!

AI narration is sometimes unintentionally good.

 
Shop at Lidl, make the pounds work for you (ie when the coffee beans are on offer, stock up, when the toothpaste is on offer, stock up), patch the takeaways, shop around for everything at the end of a contract, learn to turn wrenches a bit for keeping maintenance costs down on your vehicle, dare I say it... ditch the booze?

As an aside, I do marvel at the inflation-proof nature of the UK cannabis market. In fact, it's cheaper than ever and generally of a quality too (although proper old world hash seems scarcer, and the "cali packs" trend is scamming the youth).

On this, i would like to mention. Discs are terrible physical media due to their unbelievable fragility and inability to last a reasonable amount of time. Especially certain blue rays can after only a couple years already give out, sometimes resulting in you buying a still sealed movie with a disc that doesnt work. If you want to actually have movies without streaming services while not burning through a bunch of discs every couple years, you will need to get a plex server. This way you can stream your own high quality movies to your TV without all the space of blue rays, while having them be physically on your ssd's (or multi layerd hard drives) in your own home.

i hear spray packs like that are far more common on the east coast with california being way more elitist about their weed, but i m not american. Theres defintiely a monkey paw though about weed becoming way cheaper over the last 20 years.

I'd say so, a fuck ton of our weed (and partially culture, like it or not) is imported from there. And its not like we dont have out own spice/grey market "sold as deoderizer" half synthetics problem. The type of advertising being refrenced is mainly just aiming at the lowest common demoniator (children and people who just want to get high) a equally as profitable audience here as anywhere else. People fucking love vapes and all that. Really just depends what kind of weed your smoking and where your getting it from

also, marketing, seeling "cali weed" nets people a fat premium sometimes

We're the second largest exporter in the world. I'd be surprised if we get more than a few crumbs from California.

If some people put shitty weed in 'Cali packs' that's another matter.

A closed mouth doesn't get fed. I would sometimes ask for a front from a drug dealer(many ways to pay back, make profit, or trade)..using these avenues of course risky bitness, ahem but d.o.c or not & always pay back, it's not just good business to be of your word but it's actually very healthy, and that trust can open more doors just like it does in a job promotion...yet all in all THIS is risky business), ..yet I'm still scared to ask the fucking bank for a personal loan because I really do suck at finances and would probably blow it all in 20mins then resort back to lack of funds(I am a broke ass millennial).

Don't waste gas speeding or sitting in idle. What else? Hell there are many many ways to start a hustle, for example: reselling merchandise or furniture that another person is throwing away...which.. hustle.. itself is important because we fucking constantly consume so we need it in order to START saving.

I shop on ebay largely I will admit. 1k boots 295 new (still alot) --- I literally aim for 10-25% retail.

Play a modded ps2 and am pretty convinced im having all the fun possible with vidja games for an adult. (Just beat "Destroy all humans" to start the second one or maybe a tomb raider or something idk)

I did get a 1:1 pair of prada knockoffs and can tell absolutely zero difference after inspecting a real pair about a year later. (no place here is carrying prada). I am pretty sure they came from the same factory and am positive all the materials are the same as is the UV protection. (This works well for designer accessories but not so much the main stuff they make; wouldnt try it with a suit for example)

Cut cable bundle completely as youtube and if streaming is allowed where you are have literally the same and more content anyways -- that one saved alot.

No cell phone and a jenky ass 10$ a month modem based landline that worked about 75% of the time. (That is more an I failed activate 3 cheap cell phones in a row and got stubborn problem though)

Stopped vaping, 20 bucks a week aint nothing.

Live half off the grid and use propane so one less utility; although they just jacked the price up for economic reasons that are no mystery to me.... Have a well so no water bill either.

umm a pocket knife can lock any door (see youtube) without leaving damage unless someone really shoulers into it...

If you still running a CRTV for whatever reason (PS2) always unplug that shit when you aren't using it or it will constantly pull electricity -- was 100 bucks a month roughly assuming it off for 12 hours back in 04' (at whatever our local rate was at the time YMMV)

weed is absolutely cheaper and better than it ever has been, same with hash....MIdwest -- spend less than half of what I did when it was blackmarket.

Go magnet fishing and copper stripping if it is legal? Invest your money somewhere better than the bank and never trust any of those fucks.... Im out of advice and no im not magnet fishing or stripping copper, pretty sure both are illegal and positive they are not worth my time. (YMMV, beats collecting cans probably) -- Think I have maximized frugality pretty well though haha

Haha anyone knows how to dryclean at home tell me im about ready to play with toxic chemicals rather than to keep paying the local drycleaner who charges so much I literally only see uniforms there. (write offs) Only game it town type deal and I wear suits so fuck me....

My BB went from 45e pm to 70e ,I bought a 5g router and signed up to a 30 day rolling contract for a 10er.

Bone in chicken thighs are great value, I bone and skin them, use the bones to make stock and render the skins to make chicken fat then eat the skins.
