Alright crew,

Here's one I was thinking about recently.

What do you think the most expensive (recreational) drug of all time is? Say on a price per gram, not per dose.

I'm struggling to think. Good methamphetamine used to be pricey for a gram. But something like LSD as a gram would cost... I dunno any ideas?

But the question is what do you think the most expensive drug is?

Just for fun... There's no prize or anything.

Not sure. Maybe opium?

I paid £95 for a gram off Silk Road, back in the early 2010s.

I'm guessing that the price would have at least doubled by now.

I really would love to get some more, at some point, though. Especially seeing as I totally fucked up my consumption of said gram, rendering the beautiful, fragrant, exotic, little black ball, completely ineffective

(Although I guess that top tier, proper, potent poppy pod tea, would be pretty similar effect wise, seeing as they are more or less the same thing? (Can anyone confirm or otherwise?) and considerably less expensive.

I would guess it must be something like LSD given how many hits you'd get from a gram, street price x hits would be crazy money at it's "peak" price, $100,000 per gram maybe?

think it might be more interesting to think about price per dose though as it's not really a like for like comparison

Idk if the seller was legit but i saw a gram of LSD being sold for 10-15k (cant quite remember but it was around that price range)

wholesale price now? but in the 60s considering selling each trip at full retail value....after all that's what the feds would claim as a win!

$10 a hit (adjusted for inflation), 10,000 hits per gram...doesn't sound too far fetched

this is an interesting bit of drug culture history!

just had a quick AI assisted search
"what were the top 5 most expensive recreational drug per gram of all time adjusted for inflation"

While street prices fluctuate based on location, purity, and era, historical data adjusted for inflation identifies the following as the top five most expensive recreational drugs per gram of all time.

1. LSD (Lysergic Acid Diethylamide)
LSD is widely considered the most expensive illegal drug per gram in the world.
  • Historical Peak Price: In the black market, a single gram of pure crystal LSD can cost approximately $3,000 to $4,000.
  • Street Value (Microgram Pricing): Because a standard dose is only 50–100 micrograms, a single gram contains roughly 10,000 doses. At a street price of $10–$20 per "hit," the functional street value of one gram reaches $100,000 to $200,000.

2. Heroin
Heroin was significantly more expensive in the early 1980s before global supply chains matured and synthetic alternatives like fentanyl appeared.
  • Inflation-Adjusted Peak: In the early 1980s, a gram of pure heroin cost approximately $2,200.
  • Current Value: Today, the same amount typically costs less than $500, marking an 80% decrease in price over four decades.

3. Methamphetamine
While often viewed as a "cheap" high today, high-purity methamphetamine has historically commanded extreme prices during periods of low supply.
  • Historical Peak Price: During price spikes in the late 1980s and early 1990s, pure methamphetamine reached roughly $400 to $1,000 per gram.
  • Current Value: Prices have since stabilized, typically ranging between $10 and $100 per gram depending on the region and purity.

4. Cocaine
Known as a "rich man's drug," cocaine has maintained a relatively high price point due to its short duration of effect, leading to high consumer demand.
  • Historical Peak Price: In the late 1970s, a gram of cocaine was priced around $375 (over $1,500 in today's dollars).
  • Current Value: The current average street price in the U.S. is approximately $120 to $160 per gram when adjusted for purity.

5. MDMA (Ecstasy/Molly)
MDMA is typically sold by the pill, but its crystalline form (Molly) is often sold by the gram.
  • Peak Price Range: Depending on regional availability, MDMA can cost between $60 and $100 per gram.
  • Comparison: While cheaper than cocaine or heroin per gram, its price remains significantly higher than that of cannabis or synthetic "bath salts".

Yeah I would say opium high was same as pod tea for sure.

Afaik Latex opium could have slightly different ratio of secondary alkaloids (mainly thebaine and papaverine) than pods themselves, but effects are very similar, if properly prepared for consumption.

Well, there are many ways to look at this, but I would say kopi luwak deserves a spot on the list. Coffee beans eaten in the wild by civets and then shit out ( unlike the cheaper variety, shit out by monkeys). It can go for $500 a pound, and a cup of kopi luwak coffee can you run you up to $100
Pretty expensive for a cuppa joe.
But I read that they are starting to capture civets and keep them in cages, forcing feeding them coffee berries, which is really fucked up and immoral bullshit.

It's immoral and also ineffective, force feeded civets do not process coffee berries in the same way as wild ones (normally, they would not eat so much of it) so product is inferior.
