What are you listening to? Part XXX - Sexxxy tunes for sexxxy folks

I should reserve judgement until I listen. Never judge a book by it's cover and all of that.

But I suspect it'll be of the traditional and staid variety as opposed to the more raucously free spirited and inspired. Maybe with some 60s / 70s Lancashire working mans humour thrown in here and there. My great grandmother might have liked it lol.

But something somehow tells me they aren't going to be no for-runners of The Pogues, Waterboys, or even Fairport convention or The Dubliners. I can't imagine how I get that impression.

Definitely not in a receptive mood right now. The day has been far too long and hard. :\

I'll let you know after I've listened in a receptive mood. Not sure if you're winding me up at this stage.

Finally listened. It wasn't really up by street tbh. Very very trad. I prefer folk with some kind of modern twist, or blended with other genres, or the spirit of other genres at least.
 
Also interest-piqued by Bleaney's quite particular folky leanings hmmmm...been on the dexys today for work and now just starting a few beers (one of the rare scenarios that where I truly enjoy a drink tbh) with a cpl friends taking turns on the sounds, strictly 2 tunes each - gotta be democratic as we have different leanings but all have taste so no worries (edit, seems like ya gotta watch on youtube, gwaaaan_

 
on beer number 3 now, what a performance, the sheer virtuosity on the pipes in particular and the transition into Tabhair dom do lámh is just woaahhh....for context nobody would have been expecting these tunes to be combined and I've heard it said that Irish music changed forever at that moment

I guess it's not entirely logical, but I guess in summary / in general I like a lot of the contemporary British and Irish folk, that I have heard, but I have more time for American folk & country that was before my time. (Edit: Bob Dylan of course! How could I forget him, ) and the likes of Townes Van Zandt and Johnny Cash etc. Although TVZ blurred the lines between folk and country, and Cash was probably more firmly country. But good country, not the awful line dancing, cowboy boots, barn dance, type stuff you sometimes see.

Anyone remember Michelle Shocked, and Anchorage Alaska? What a song! She had a brief moment in the sun in the late 1980s, and recorded a great album, that has some great tracks on it. Sadly youtube cancelled her years and years ago, over some alleged racist slurs I believe. So the only way to hear her is to get the CD, or she might be on Spotify, I'm not sure.

I'm sure if I went through every pre-1970 British / Irish Folk music track I'd find other things I'd like apart from Matty Groves. There's another track that Fairport Convention (or one of their off shoots) recorded on a Peel session, and when Sandy Denny's vocals kick in, it just elevates the track to a whole new and much higher level. I'll find it and post when I get the chance.

I think this might have been what I was thinking of. It has a much more of a rock based guitar sound than usual for FC.



So I should probably check out more of the FC stuff that she sang on. Although there is just such a vast quantity and choice of music of all genres to listen to, I'll never be able to be as familiar with everything of decent quality as I'd like to be.

Especially as I'm spending more time listening to audio books these days.

I am genuinely surprised. If you are the person I'm pretty sure that I think you are, then IIRC, everything you liked in your previous incarnations had to be pretty "edgy," for want of a better phrase.

But yeah I guess the origins and history of Western civilisation's folk music could be an interesting subject. I wonder if there are any decent docs on youtube. Films are another great source of folk music of course and there's lots of great Southern American folk, with all sorts of influences going on there.

I think though after hearing The Pogues'; Rum, Sodomy & The Lash, and If I Should Fall From Grace with God, and The Waterboy's Fishermans Blues so early in my life, I've been thoroughly spoiled, as I think they are among the finest folk albums I've ever heard, and the quality is so hard to beat. So I think I pretty much started with the best British folk albums of all time imho.. I had a long long gap of not listening to IISFGWG and when I came back to it after maybe 20-30 years I was absolutely blown away by the quality and majesty of the songs, medleys, lyrics, layers of instrumentals, and the melodies, and the vocal delivery. OMG, just fantastic. Of course the late Shane MacGowan's genius is no well kept secret.

It's so hard to pick just one track, but this one is thoroughly steeped in the tradition and is just sublime. It's the quality of the musicianship, the layers, and production, as well as the lyrics, and the melodies, and MacGowan's voice never sounded better!

Barbara Streisand and Barry Gibb? You couldn't get much more easy listening radio 2 than that? Nothing wrong with that, I like some of that myself at times, and no disrespect intended, it's just that I'm really not sure what sure to make of some of your latest posts in this thread.

Considering your previous tastes.
