US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

Life of Imprisonment.
Followed by 5 Years Supervised Release.

Wait, what?

a life sentence is usually not a lifetime long. depending on the terms of the sentence, they could serve, say, 20 years then receive supervised release.

They signed and passed the "Fuck the poor continue to boost the rich bill"

they did. a lot of trump voters in red states will be negatively impacted by this bill. maybe, just maybe, when that happens, they'll realise that trump doesn't give a shit about them.

alasdair

The Medicaid cuts don't kick in until after the midterms. The tax cuts which don't favor the rich expire after the midterms.

IMO, the world won't end right away and libs will be accused of overreacting.

^Thanks for that small bit of hope friend. I thought this bill meant the tax cuts that favor the rich CONTINUE and do not expire????

THIS BILL ABSOLUTELY PROVED THERE IS NO LINE. How many Republicans said they couldn't sign it blah they had Alot of soulsearching to do etc --- they all folded. (Exception Tillison(Sp)? )

The "Libs" are always overreacting---- as seeing anything coming more than a month away is very "Lib".

Global Warming for example (climate change w/e) Been hearing about how that would mess things up in 30 yrs for about 30 yrs --- and here we are watching Islands go under and (Australia?) willing to take in 250 some ppl a year from said Island. Where the US contributes zero and still the GOP is on some "coal" shit.

The US dollar I guess tanking is a strong word but since it is based on the globes trust in the US I think I can say the trust is tanking -- perhaps the dollar won't follow. Pray they have more symp/empathy for us than us for them lol

this is an interesting observation, the term I think we are looking for to describe those who don't like examining future consequences is "reactionary"

reactionary politics sums up the republican party pretty well, and even a portion if the democratic party

A Brtisih journalist noted that the MAGA loyal are prepared to swallow bills they KNOW will harm them as long as it upsets a Democrat MORE.

I don't know how true this is but said journalist does consume a lot of social media and appaently has seen this exact pattern of behavior.

I'm in no position to know - so can anyone comment?

^ Yes this is true. He ran on a promise of retribution -- first thing he did was pardon the Jan 6th folk and start shutting down and prosecuting anyone that was previously prosecuting (Or in many cases simply speaking the truth) about h im.

He talks about how he would like to see democratic leaders in jail on a regular basis and "Owning the libs" seems more of a concern than running the country; in MN two democrat politicians were killed in the last week (maybe 2). Whitmer the Gov of MI they attempted to kidnap. Who is "They" is a fair question; right wing nut jobs that know (or feel strongly) they will not be prosecuted thoroughly for attacking Democrats right now.

In fact I claim "Refugee" lol I am just kidding of course but the doxxing swatting shit is all them pretty much. Objectively I have seen Trump weaponize the justice system where Biden definitely did not or there is no way Trumps cases woulda dragged along like that.

Sorry, It was early. I should have specified. The Medicaid cuts don't kick in until after the midterms. The tax cuts are immediate but the ones favoring the middle class expire after the midterms. The tax cuts for the wealthy are immediate and permanent.

By pushing the Medicaid pain past the midterms they can say Dems are overreacting now and try to blame them then. It' a tried and true Repug trick. Always look for it.

Long ago I suggested that the closest historical analogy to the US today wasn't any of the fascist regimes of the 19th and early 20th century but was in fact far closer to Rome cicra 24BC.

It seems few people have studied that particlar set of events. It's quite complex but I think the key detail is that it was presented as a fait acomplice. There was not precice date when one could say 'democracy ended HERE' but rather the senate became increasingly corrupt and servile and allowed all of the power to fall into the hands of a single person.

It wasn't so much that they said yes, more a case that for one reason or another (bribary, patronage, threats) they didn't say no.

Complacency and convenience very well may be the enemy alright!

It's interesting that the orange gimp seems to be enacting changes that hit his own core supporters the most. I suggest the next step will to agree to go easy on the states he doesn't have much support in. I presume US politics is much like UK politics in which there is a lot of 'horse-trading' behind the scenes. So at the moment he would still need the support of Democrats in both houses to get some of his craziest bills through. So for now, he's prepared to offer them a win for their home state in return for abstaining. Not voting against, merely abstaining.

THAT is exactly what happened in the Roman Reupublic.

Of course he knows that US law sensibly (in my opinion) only allows a US citizen for two terms. But we saw how Putin was able to manipulate both the State Council AKA the Duma and Federation Council (upper house) to ammend the constitution. Because I have a question. If the orange gimp were to run as vice-president in the next election, wouldn't the media circus still surround him and not the Ewok lookalike who is nominally running to be president?

So a question for all of you learned US BLers, if J.D. Vance is elected as the next US president and resigns, what next?

Because while I see WHY former vice-presidents may quite legitimately go on to be president (resignation, death and so on), their doesn't seem to a 'term limit' and someone could frame it as an anomaly? Because members of both houses can only vote yes or no OR abstain, would it be possible to tack something on to a bill that assures THEIR state of future success? Just one random example might be that funding and tax relief on businesses developing renewable energy and green alternatives will be legally secured... oh and BTW no limits on presidential terms...

This is not my field. I read a lot of history along with my sciences but I'm from a family of journalists so my formative years were spent knowing things that couldn't be published. Mostly boring stuff but occassionaly stuff that could potentially put one of us in personal danger.

If you think I'm making it up, I recommend any BLers from Liverpool to find the birth certificate of former British PMs wife 'Cherie Blair'. If you know, you know ;-)

Trump wont allow another election ever again, Why should he? He hates America and has no use for the simps now hes King. Jokes doesn't get close to this madness, but at the end of the day all he and the right have to do is lie about everything. Hes won. The UK is broken, but compared to the US I think its still proper for common folk.

I suppose the only thing we can hope for is that well known 6'3, 215lb Adonis Donald Trump will discover that he cannot sign an exective order to ban mortality.

I suppose most people are aware that Donald Trump is fond of one particular chain of fast food outlets, but even I was shocked to discover his order:

2 x Big Mac
2 x Fillet-of-Fish sandwiches
1 x chocolate milk shake.

But hey, no fries. Proof it if were needed that even a stopped clock is correct once a day.

But I still think it worth exploring HOW Donald Trump will hold on to power.

He has no use for a world which thinks it can carry on after he dies. If he cant have life then no one can.

Am I correct in saying that when the orange gimp lost the last election, the speaker of the house actually had to get assurances from the Joint Chiefs of Staff that an insane president could not nuke the world. They took it quite seriously and pointed out that 'an illegal order would not be acted on'.

Little bit of trivia for you - the UKs nuclear deterrent is entirely based on SLBMS and it's presumed that if a war began, their would be no orders possible. So the captain and chief weapons officer decide... based on the 'letter of last resort' written by each PM in turn and stored in a safe on-board said submarines. It gets even stranger. One of the KEY ways those submarines know if when to read that letter is if the BBC world service doesn't broadcast the world news (ever 30 minutes day and night)

Bit worrying - WW3 could strart because someone at the BBC forgets to read out the weather!

Its BBC Radio 4 Longwave - if we dont hear the midnight chime after the shipping forecast then we have to assume the balloons gone up. We have no civil defense left so were all fucked anyway.
