Honestly, I really don't need a tinfoil hat here. I find the simplest explanation why Trump won the best one. There was absolutely no adequate opposition to beat him. Three times in a row. First there was Clinton which was pretty much the only possible candidate remotely as unpopular as Trump. This resulted in a coin flip situation where Trump won.The supreme court ruled that he couldn't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of the official duties of a president. There is no legal mechanism at this point to hold him accountable. The only political mechanism would be impeachment and censure which must be initiated and adjudicated in congress - but with Republican control of both chambers, and a lack of willingness to vote to uphold impeachment during his prior administration, and then following his actions on January 6th, it is inconcievable to think that he is at risk of that occurring at this time. The 2026 mid-term elections could result in some change in the makeup of congress. If a ton of democrats or anti-trump Republicans were to somehow win and form a large enough majority, then it would be possible.
Given how much control and influence he has had thus far, I would be shocked if he isn't trying to use every legal and illegal means to ensure that he will retain as much power as possible at that point. Voting districts have been realigned to benefit republicans at the expense of democrats (clumping small numbers of republicans across many districts and isolating large numbers of democrats into as few districts as possible - gerrymandering - in order to increase the power of rural voters over urban voters). There is a non-zero chance that Elon's involvement in the election included manipulation of voting machines that used his internet company to communicate with the internet ("Everything can be hacked" - Musk's statement just before election day). There were also a disporportionate number of bombthreats called in by russian troll farms to swing states, shutting down those voting centers and restricting access as well as leading to unattended voting machines which may have been compromised remotely or through things like USB drives, during the shutdown of those centers. At the very least, these threats may have scared away voters that may have voted against Trump.
So much of this shit goes into tinfoil hat territory that I just simply shrug and accept that there are powerful people playing powerful games that have real consequences for Americans, let alone everyone else in the world. His crypto memestocks that he pumps and dumps are siphoning money away from investors who buy-in, while also providing a method to bribe him that lacks regulatory oversight. His kids are creating a crypto empire in the background while all of this is happening, cementing his family's legacy as a member of the ruling class.
Still - I have faith that karma comes for those who generate wealth through the creation of suffering and chaos. Maybe? Maybe not?
Then there was Biden next. Biden was already way too old and confused when running for his first term. He was lucky that Trump lost sympathy during COVID or he likely would not have won. He rode into the white house through another coin flip situation, which is a pretty low bar when its about defending the country from someone as dangerous as Trump and if Biden would have undergone the same scrutiny like Reagan (when it was believed his dementia took over they were about to make him step down until he proved them wrong) he would not have been president for long.
After barely being successful with an aged Biden they tried it again with an even older Biden. This should never have happened. The second Biden said "4 more years" there should have been an outcry and it should have been made very clear to him that this would not fly. That they needed the best, young, charismatic candidate possible to decisively beat Trump. But no. They went for another coin flip. And this time they lost. I don't even blame Harris. She had no chance from the start. She was never considered to be an alternative to Biden (which is insane considering his age). Also election campaigns start years in advance. She had a few months. But the way she was she had little competence in important matters. It seemed she had not much to say in general. While Trump talked for 3 hours straight on Rogan's podcast she had a cameo on SNL. It is a horrible tragedy that she lost but she was a weak candidate.
A vital democracy must be able to cope with manipulation such as gerrymandering and also social media campaigns, from enemy states and within. States influence elections in other states. That's nothing new. I am willing to bet money that the USA influenced the last few elections in Russia for example. When a democracy is vital, such minor influences are not a problem but if one important election after another just ends in a coin flip situation, then you don't have a vital democracy. You have a democracy that is on its last legs and I think that's precisely what happened here.
On a side note: It was the exact same thing in Britain during Brexit btw. People blame Russia and Facebook and bots but in reality there is one man that can be blamed for this whole thing and that is David Cameron. It was him who tried appeasing the right and making people vote for independence without any need for doing so. Or without any certainty of the outcome. He gambled away the future of his country in an unnecessary coin flip.
