US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

Um, what the actual fk? Trump's the only president who declined his salary (first term, no idea about this term) and came out of office poorer than when he went in. Whatver are you on about? Please explain.
I'm not talking about 2020, I'm talking about this year, and his family in general. Ivanka, Eric, Trump Jr., Kushner, etc. They all made out like bandits 4 years ago. This year, Trump has used his position to increase his wealth by over a billion dollars. He made $415 in a single day by pumping and dumping Truth Social. Very unpresidential, and very unprecedented.

I'd Google the deets for you, but unfortunately I'm sober now and don't have the mental fortitude for CEPS anymore.

Trump tariff on China is now 145%.

Nobody fucking asked for this. The man is unstable.

I can't wait for everything to be 3x more expensive FOR NO FUCKING REASON.

Oh they're going to build American factories? Haha yeah and staff them with robots and AI.

I'm pretty sure the people who voted for Trump voted for it. He's been visibly unstable for years

u.s. citizens are anxious and uncertain. meanwhile...

Trump Brags About How Tariff Pause Made His Friends Even Richer

"Donald Trump is openly bragging about just how much money his billionaire buddies made off of his dangerous tariff gambit.

After announcing a 90-day pause Wednesday on his sweeping “reciprocal tariff” policy on nearly every country—with the exception of China—Trump was excited to take credit for making a buck for his guests at the Oval Office.

“He made $2.5 million today, and he made $900 million! That’s not bad,” Trump said, pointing to financial investor Charles Schwab and Roger Penske, a Nascar team owner, respectively.

Schwab’s estimated net worth is $12.6 billion, while Penske’s is $5.6 billion.

Bloomberg reported that Wednesday was the “best day ever” for billionaires, as the world’s wealthiest people raked in a heaping $304 billion as the markets shot back up.
"

it's not a question of being tone deaf or insensitive any more. they just don't give a shit.

That's the thing. Trumpers commonly want a return to the "good old days" when you could easily get an unskilled labor factory job which paid well. The unskilled factory jobs which exist now pay peanuts and that won't change. It's dirtier work, hard on your body, and doesn't pay much over retail, etc., if at all.
There would indeed be the support technicians for the automated factories, but they require an education roughly equivalent to a two year degree (at least). And, of course, there are less of them.

The coal miners should jump at the opportunity to re-train. Free schooling? Let's party.
You can continue to work with your hands, But ya gots to change with the times.

The act has been used 4 times.

  • War of 1812 - against British nationals
  • WW1 - against Central Powers (Germany, Austria-Hungary Ottomans, Bulgaria, amendment expanded beyond just males
  • WW2 - against Japanese, German, and Italian non-citizens. President Roosevelt then used EO to intern the Jap-Amer citizens. Truman proclamtion gave AG authority to determine if they are "dangerous to the public peace and safety of the United States," to order them removed, and to create regulations governing their removal, citing the Alien Enemies Act" from the continental US. Truman then gave Sec State power to remove aliens from Latin American within 30d.
  • Trump against gang members in the US
Sorry for any delay TLB, life is just a whirlwind at the moment. And thanks for outlining that act. My history is fuzzy. I mean I learned of the internment camps just in the last 10 years. Interesting.

Would you argue it is NOT wise and proper to round up threats domestically and to restrain or remove them? Again, the internment rounded up those who were not obvious threats, it was a mistake. But all the others? I would argue the gang members have proven to be such a domestic threat both through their frequent criminal actions (rapes, murders, etc) and their heavy inflow of drugs (fentanyl) killing hundreds of thousands of Americans. How is this wrong?
You posted a very logical sentiment and I agree. I do want to see criminals reap what they sow. What I don't want to see happen is people like The Love Bandit scooped up as a criminal for being involved with one of the bigger drug sites and labeled a criminal because someone says so. (and they could under the current sentiment) If that happened and your neighbors wanted to come and help clear that up I think it should be looked into and not just ignored. We need the due process. However you also said it in another thread all a side has to do is stack the important jobs with their people and then it becomes opinions instead of laws. It use to be we would let 1000 criminals go to save ONE innocent man. I don't believe we should ever make any move out of fear. Logic and sense is needed. I have said there is a part of me that gets annoyed that our tax dollars go to politicians and they point fingers instead of solving. Surly smarter heads from both parties could figure out some logical solution. Go into a room and figure this out. We pay them for that.

I honestly am not the guy to argue anything in this arena. I can't even pretend that the current admin cares about anything but power, money and applauding anything not decent. (Ex Christy Noem tried to get applause for killing a puppy due to being weak and she did not get the response she wanted) I am seeing something similar to The Emperors new cloths. People afraid to speak out against things that may be not decent due to probably being blackmailed by the current chief with their secrets. I do stay away because it hurts me that some people can't see the cult aspect of servicing the current chief even if they have to sacrifice their wives lol. (Ted Cruz thank you Mr. President yes my wife is ugly and I will not stick up for her....) Also setting up fake electors was underhanded. But i will say it would be interesting to have insight into every election from the start and have insight into which side did what to win. I bet many underhanded things happened in history. I lost interest at the hanging chads era.

As I have said I immigrated to Canada and my wife immigrated to the US. We did it legally and paid a lot of money, took a lot of time and we were patient. Now she is US citizen too, that cost $800. But we never would we leave any of the issues hanging that I read about in the news. 9 out of 10 stories about ICE scooping up people seemed to be about people having not completed some paperwork or paid a fee. My wife and I would never have done that. So to that I say immigrate correctly. We did, but I still do not have adversity to illegals. No anger, just a desire for the US (and Canada) to handle it correctly. But yeah, I should be pounding my fist, when all said and done cost over $4000 to immigrate to the US correctly. (Canada was more money for me) But I can't reach that anger as all I see are human beings trying to live a life.

But I love you guys. :) You guys have great discussions.

I feel like when you ask Trump voters to explain what he's doing or to make excuses for his behavior, they always turn it back into conservative vs liberal culture bullshit. They can't actually answer the question objectively. I think his behavior is wholly indefensible, and it's too challenging for them to actually admit he's a terrible president, basically a lunatic, and the difficult to swallow pill that we are this close to total collapse and WWIII.

I am NOT a liberal. I hate the word. Ask how many far left liberals on this forum hate me because I challenge their views. I align with no party, if anything I am the proverbial moderate. I dislike both the left and right. What I really hate is stupidity, willful ignorance, vanity and greed.

The Doomsday Clock has been set 89 seconds to midnight, the highest it's ever been in history.

i tend to agree and, when people talk of his die-hard supporters as a cult, this is the kind of thing they have in mind.

i'm sure you've seen examples - i'm pretty sure jimmy kimmel has done it - when a reporter asks trump supporters "what do you think that biden suggested covid can be cured by shining a bright light inside the body" and they reply that biden is obviously old and suffering from dementia. then the reporter corrects themselves and says they made a mistake and asks the same question, except trump said it, and the reply changes to "well, it depends on the technology and we should look into that". the support is nothing to do with the issue.

I don't understand why he's not getting in trouble. Guaranteed his family and friends made billions off of the market.

The supreme court ruled that he couldn't be prosecuted for crimes committed as part of the official duties of a president. There is no legal mechanism at this point to hold him accountable. The only political mechanism would be impeachment and censure which must be initiated and adjudicated in congress - but with Republican control of both chambers, and a lack of willingness to vote to uphold impeachment during his prior administration, and then following his actions on January 6th, it is inconcievable to think that he is at risk of that occurring at this time. The 2026 mid-term elections could result in some change in the makeup of congress. If a ton of democrats or anti-trump Republicans were to somehow win and form a large enough majority, then it would be possible.

Given how much control and influence he has had thus far, I would be shocked if he isn't trying to use every legal and illegal means to ensure that he will retain as much power as possible at that point. Voting districts have been realigned to benefit republicans at the expense of democrats (clumping small numbers of republicans across many districts and isolating large numbers of democrats into as few districts as possible - gerrymandering - in order to increase the power of rural voters over urban voters). There is a non-zero chance that Elon's involvement in the election included manipulation of voting machines that used his internet company to communicate with the internet ("Everything can be hacked" - Musk's statement just before election day). There were also a disporportionate number of bombthreats called in by russian troll farms to swing states, shutting down those voting centers and restricting access as well as leading to unattended voting machines which may have been compromised remotely or through things like USB drives, during the shutdown of those centers. At the very least, these threats may have scared away voters that may have voted against Trump.

So much of this shit goes into tinfoil hat territory that I just simply shrug and accept that there are powerful people playing powerful games that have real consequences for Americans, let alone everyone else in the world. His crypto memestocks that he pumps and dumps are siphoning money away from investors who buy-in, while also providing a method to bribe him that lacks regulatory oversight. His kids are creating a crypto empire in the background while all of this is happening, cementing his family's legacy as a member of the ruling class.

Still - I have faith that karma comes for those who generate wealth through the creation of suffering and chaos. Maybe? Maybe not?

Every single thing you said other than direct hacking of voting machines is not, "tin foil hat territory", it's fact. And the direct hacking is certainly possible.

All I mean by the 'tin foil hat territory' statement is that thinking about this stuff leads to questioning so much, and ultimately I can't do anything about any of it. All I can do is focus on my life, my loved ones, and the people I want to be of service to. I have given enough attention to the reality television spectacle, and I realize that the only way I can exercise power over it is to focus on more important things. In the end, accept the things i can't change and focus on changing the things I can. I have better things to do with my time than waste it thinking about Trump.

That said, it's hard to not get sucked into it (especially once I started modding CEPS... stepping away from that has been good for my soul). Tech is pacifying us through outrage and propaganda.

Lol. Trump just exempted smartphones, computers, and other electronics from his Chinese tariffs.
He's going to end up with a 1,236% tariff on birthday candles and his followers will say he is playing 4d chess.
China said he was a joke and Trump blinked twice.
I can't complain. My very meager IRA is in bonds. He's wrecking the stock market and the bond market is in unprecedented trouble too. Fingers crossed.

He has a point but he does also make jokes on the stuff they're asking him about.
imo he of course was saying whatever to get them to shutup and also to have the snippets go his way and not their way where they get one of those moments they can stretch to hell...

of course he keeps up on the news, he said it all when he told the lady she hadn't read up on his own comments enough. they were being pests, and he dealt with them.

also idk what what's his name's on about, bill burr is one of the sharpest celebrities out there right now. i know that doesn't say much, but still...
