US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

And for those who say that they always hear from "the left" this this election is the most important ever, every time...

You're right. That can't always be true. This election can't always be the most important.

To be fair, I've heard that every election is the most important ever...from both sides, for every election I've been alive. Hyperbole unlimited for all! Huzzah.

Real world consequences means very little in the end, it's all about online posturing.

Ah, yes, online noise effects about the importance, but I agree it doesn't translate to the real world. So many have thought 'this is the end' only to find the sun continues to rise, bluelighters continue to get high, and another politician gets voted out of office for someone else to take their place. Life finds a way.

It's official. The Trump crash is bigger than the one from Covid lockdown when we were all home not working.

I might hazard to add that one might look at the trend from 2016 to 2020 and compare to the trend from, we'll even say 2021, to 2024. Even throwing out 2020 completely.

Ok, Covid dip 2020 and Trump Tarriff deep for 2025. Wtf happened in 2022?

Turning out attention back to 2025, let's check in a week later and see how deep this dip is, and how long it lasts.

On a different note, people seem to have picked up on the fact that the press conferance on tarriffs was late on Friday afternoon and ascribe it as a new tactic. It's something I have seen many times in British politics. What has altered is the volume of after hours trading. I'm unsure exactly how this works but it seems as if at least some trading goes on all day and every day. I know little about it and the direction appears to have remained largely the same.

All administrations have done this. Late Friday news dumps, or heading into a long holiday weekend, are techniques all sdministrations have used to somewehat bury a news release they don't want visible. The other trick is to have some other fire take all the headlines and slip some announcement out the back page while nobody is looking. It's common, and not new.

Trump has caused the greatest loss of wealth for Americans in one day in all of history.

See!?!?! That bastard is always helping/protecting his billionars club!!??!

Meanwhile, his family is lining his pockets and getting uber rich with shady under the table dick shaking.

Um, what the actual fk? Trump's the only president who declined his salary (first term, no idea about this term) and came out of office poorer than when he went in. Whatver are you on about? Please explain.

All while Trump has spent 20 of his first 76 days in office GOLFING.

Factcheck: TRUE! Next question: 24h in a day, and a round of 18 takes roughly 4-5h (depending upon how much you suck), how much did he have for other things? Bonus question: Can one take calls while playing a round? Why yes, yes one can.

It's disgusting that your country is making it illegal in some states even if it's a 18 year old that was raped.
So you have no problem paying for rich companies welfare but don't want poor people to have health care.

You are Canadian, so maybe you can't answer this, but how many states have removed provisions for rape victims? I'll help you out, 8. There are 10 states that have a limited restriction for rape (how viable is the baby), and 32 have no restrictions. This is better than a federal level ban as it allows the states to set their laws, and have those lawmakers replaced if the laws don't align with the citizens mindset. I'd prefer to have a mixed solution like this, than a federal law that allows or blocks abortions nationwide.

but in the u.s. they certainly are e.g. alabama, arkansas, idaho, kentucky, mississippi, missouri, oklahoma and texas...

Dammit, Ali already had the 8 provided. Kudos.

right, it's a pretty stark image but i can't help think of this:

How about, the one of the left has made the choice to pose like that of her own free will, and could equally choose not to without worrying about being brutally savaged by the 'men' around her? Or how about the one on the left actually looks like a woman whereas the one on the right just looks like a female face protruding out from a dominator outfit?

Come on man. This image is Reddit tier, we shouldn't be soiling places outside of Reddit with this hollow crap.

Do the USA have anything in place to see if trump or his buddies are buying up stock for cheap?

This is a legitimate concern. I mean, him yanking chains on an every-other-day basis to send the stocks up and down would be a MASSIVE inside trader opportunity if anyone knows what he is going to do next. I'm serious. Now, to throw a joke on it, I don't think HE knows what he's going to do next, lol.

saw this today and thought of that post:

Where it comes home for me is watching the student protests on campuses in recent years. Their view of oppression is whack in that they've got cell phones, fresh clothes, never gone hungry a day in their life. We have a generation, maybe two (I'll put you and me into it) that haven't truly seen oppression. We, as a society, have been fat, dumb, and happy for a loooong time, my friend. And the next phase is coming.

I guess what got my attention was the way people just accepted it without comment or any form of resistance. I don't see people in this country doing that.

I don't see people accepting that they need to hand a bribe to the person at the DMV if they want to get their driver's license renewed. Or accepting they have to hand a bribe to the officer who just pulled them over if they don't want him to falsify charges.

Do we just shrug and say everyone does it? Or do we resist and call out corruption?

No, for you and I in western societies, it is not the norm and not accepted. My point is there are societies where it is the norm and goes unquestioned. Should such bribery become commonplace in our societies, you'd see a huge pushback from those unaccustomed to it.

Trump tweets on Truth Social to buy stocks 4 hours before he put a 90 day pause on his tariffs, which caused the market to go back up. Clear market manipulation, obvious insider trading going on. But of course, he's king and has immunity.

Any other person who did this would be immediately arrested. What a sleazeball man...

Apparantly the above used to be taught in US schools when explaining the causes of the Great Depression.

Are any BLers old enough to be able to confirm or indeed refuse the above statment which I culled from Page 94 (The Private Eye Podcast).

I'll put my hand up for being in the 'older' crowd, but what little economics I was taught (and fwiw, my dad taught college econ, I may have even taken one of his courses, idunno), I don't recall Smoot-Hawley being taught. Not in economics, or civics courses, or any of that. I picked up a tertiary understanding through the news over the years whenever an administration started talking about tarriffs.

The other thing to keep in mind is how old it is. The world was different, and the US was a world producer at that point. Now, we are a service and consumption society. Other than some coal to China and other trade products, we haven't been producing goods for the world and let our manufacturing die off. We're in a different position now than we were then. We'll need different tactics and approaches to other nations.

i have deleted another off-topic post. i can't keep up with this so i am going to ask one last time. please keep these off-topic posts out of the thread.

I’m up a couple cool grand in a day. Not counting anything long term obviously since that’s still down

Good things come to those who wait

Iran says it is ready for nuclear deal if US stops military threats

Iran is ready to engage with the US at talks on Saturday over its nuclear programme "with a view to seal a deal", its Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said.

But US President Donald Trump must first agree there can be no "military option", Araghchi said, and added that Iran would "never accept coercion".

He also insisted the negotiations in Oman would be indirect, contradicting Trump's surprise announcement on Monday that they would be "direct talks".

Trump, who pulled the US out of a 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers during his first term, warned that Iran would be in "great danger" if talks were not successful.
The US and Iran have no diplomatic ties, so last month Trump sent a letter to Iran's supreme leader via the United Arab Emirates. It said he wanted a deal to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and to avert possible military strikes by the US and Israel.

Trump disclosed the upcoming talks during a visit to the White House on Monday by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who said on Tuesday that both leaders had agreed "Iran will not have nuclear weapons" and added "the military option" would happen if talks dragged on.

Iran insists its nuclear activities are entirely peaceful and it will never seek to develop or acquire nuclear weapons.

However, Iran has increasingly breached restrictions imposed by the existing nuclear deal, in retaliation for crippling US sanctions reinstated seven years ago, and has stockpiled enough highly-enriched uranium to make several bombs.
The US president told reporters in the Oval Office on Monday that this weekend's meeting in Oman would be "very big".

"I think everybody agrees that doing a deal would be preferable to doing the obvious," Trump said.

But he also warned that it would "be a very bad day for Iran" if the talks were not successful.

In an opinion piece published by the Washington Post on Tuesday, Iran's foreign minister declared that it was "ready to engage in earnest and with a view to seal a deal".

"We will meet in Oman on Saturday for indirect negotiations. It is as much an opportunity as it is a test," Araghchi said.

Oh for sure he's being authentic, I don't think he tries to hide it. He just really isn't that funny or charismatic. It isn't helped by the fact that so many other comedians are complete dogshit these days as well, I think people have lost touch with what genuinely funny people are and the sort of material they work with (uncomfortable social commentary and truths).
Probably helps that he's from near me so his brand of humor feels familiar to the types of slightly townie humor I grew up around.
