US Politics the 2025 trump presidency thread

I'm sorry you misread, or misunderstood my post. Looking back, I can see exactly how my words led you there. To clarify, I was speaking to the point that many elderly are self-sufficient (exempted from my point about calling in, as they are fully capable), and of the ones who aren't self-sufficient I would expect them to be a bit lost (joke about phone books that no longer exist) and/or having someone that checks on them and would be able to assist. How much of the total population falls into the remaining group of not-self-sufficient and having no-helpers? We don't know, they can't tell us and nobody is checking on them to tell us << another joke, btw.

Ah. So it was all a joke and I misunderstood or misread. OK.
Where have I heard that before? From who?

The SEC's statement was true that 'fraudsters scream loud and immediately'. In no way did I intend to say his statement of fragile old people was true. Or did you not see my opening statement? "For starters, the statement about old people is absurd and shouldn't have been made. At all. It shows a myopic view of our population."
He didn't say anything about, "fragile old people". He said they'd think there was a mistake and they'd get a check next month. You are the only one who spoke of fragile old people, and then elaborated and built upon the statement.

Well, since it was all an elaborate joke, and one that no one else at all seemed to "get", how are we to know whether to believe anything at all you are saying?

And for being nearly 70, I will say I ain't far behind. My statements on 'some' old people needing assistance or being a bit out of touch is based on my experience. 2 grandparents had alzheimers, as has a parent (yes, I know it is coming) = needing assistance, and having it. That, and being around more and more 'old fragile people' exposes me to the range of those that are self-sufficient and those that aren't. It doesn't change from my semi-joke of either a person can take care of themselves, or they can't and someone would help them, or....who is left after that? YES there are some on SS who cannot take care of themselve and have nobody looking in on them. The first that come to mind would be BLers on disability SS after being ostracized/abandoned by family...but those are still self-sufficient enough to get help if they choose to. So, who is left that is needing help, alone, and unable to call if there is an issue?

You prove the point - YOU ARE self-sufficient. For those you know that are alone, if they are working with you a) you would know if something is wrong with them and b) their working = self-sufficient for gettting help.

As to your first comment, neither myself (and I assume) the SEC person are in any way trying to demean or belittle older folks. His entire point was fraud will be found quickly when they scream about being cut off. If a legitmate recipient is accidently cut off, do you believe they wouldn't get turned back on immediately?

So just to get what you are saying right, you think people shouldn't call if they don't receive their social security checks? We should just hold our breath for a few months and assume our government will notice and make it right immediately? You're saying that's what anyone who is not a fraudster would do? Personally I would call to see why I haven't received my check. Why not? Why wait?

As to your point that the vast majority of our elderly citizens have support groups and family members checking on them on a consistent basis and they would be fine for a few months if their checks were cut off unexpectedly . . . Well why bother. It's clear you are saying what fits your narrative.

man, how tone deaf and out of touch do you have to be to cash a govt. salary check of $250,000pa, have a personal net worth of $1.5 billion dollars and tell seniors living on a fixed income that, if their social security check fails to appear, they should just wait another month?

alasdair

Not as tone deaf as Being poor or working class yourself and on social security but yet still supporting these billionaires stealing social security. These people are cooked. They would literally rather die than go against the god king.

The Trump presidency - putting serving US service members in harms way.

It's the reaction by the government that is most telling. Attacking the person who reports on the security failure, claiming nothing classified was leaked and pretending it's not important.

Why not just admit fault, promise to revise security protocols and move on? What they have succeeded in doing is making any ally of the US doubt the security of the US government.

But I think we have all witnessed how such people will ALWAYS seek to displace the blame onto others, however spurious the logic employed.

The big lie.

OT I note that the US government has just announced the secreary of state for nomnative determinism - Helena Handcart.

Apparently Tulsi Gabbard didn't get the Trump memo about the threat of Fentanyl crossing Canadian borders:
“So, the president has stated that the fentanyl coming through Canada is massive, and actually said it was an “unusual and extraordinary threat,” and that was the language that was used to justify putting tariffs on Canada,” Heinrich said. “I’m just trying to reconcile those two issues. Is it an “unusual and extraordinary threat,” or is it a minor threat that doesn’t even merit mention in the Annual Threat Assessment?”
Gabbard said she couldn’t speak to the “specifics” of the threat posed by Canadian fentanyl trafficking.
The Trump administration has repeatedly referred to a terrifying 2,000 percent increase in drug trafficking over the U.S.-Canada border in the last year. But the reality is much less thrilling. In 2023, only two pounds of fentanyl were seized at the northern border, and a total of 43 pounds of fentanyl were seized in 2024, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. As one NBC News reporter pointed out, that’s still “less than a carry-on suitcase.”

I'm gonna hit pause for a moment. It seems there's some miscommunication between us. You don't know me, I don't know you, let's reset. For the record, nothing I ever write will have malicious intent, at most it is a light jab but I throw out jokes all the time. A 'joke' is not a means to excuse a post, as I'll stand behind everything I write, but it is never intended as an insult or attack. Additionally, I am notorious about writing long posts. I can't help it, it is my nature. I use a lot of extra words to try and overexplain, but I have seen where that causes even more confusion at times. I'll work on that, try to be more concise and to the point.

@ Everyone else - I do apologize for showing up out of nowhere and essentially carpet bombing the thread. I've been off site for a long time, and in catching up I feel I have somewhat dominated the thread - not my intent, I'd much rather have some back and forth. That's tough when someone posts 10 replies in a row, and each one is an essay. I'll work on throttling back my interaction, for everyone's benefit.

@TLB - about those uber long posts, over and over...

I found this BBC podcast. 'Strong Message Here' explains the history and underlying logic of the words politicians use.

'Build, Baby, Builf'
'Trump Degangement Syndrome'
'The Threat from WIthin'
'Be Quest, Small Man'

and several others are clearly for US listenders. It pulls no punches and isn't biased one way or the other - if a US politician says something unfathomable, it's mocked withut mercy. Enjoy!

Armando Iannuchi (writer of 'In the Loop & 'Veep' among others) and Helen Lewis (Private Eye journalist) - those are to very well informed people AND it's funny AND it's true.

One that caught my ear was 'malicious compliance' where people who ask how an order should be interpreted are purposefully fearmongering. They give examples in which an order is so non-specific as to mean whatever someone want's it to mean. But if someone involved in 'good spending' gets a media response by saying they are unsure what an order means are accused of 'malicious compliance'.

I would have to read the specific order but the ones I have read are pretty broad in stroke and for marginal cases, I can well understand someone being unsure.

'Flood the Zone' is a hilarious one. Donald Trump ordering dams to be emptied to 'give water to LA' before someone pointed out that the water wouldn't reach LA and in fact would simple mean farmers have no water - why isn't the UK media reporting all of this comedy gold?

Dude the BBC is not unbiased at all. It is the state broadcaster, it literally represents the aspirations and desires of the British establishment, of course it is fucking biased 😂 It really should be known by its proper title, and that is MI7 - any time there is a whiff of war or conflict, the bias becomes crystal clear.. which is exactly what MI7 was for (propaganda division of military intelligence).

Well, listen and decide.

Why won’t democrats and powerful blue states like CA. NY, and MA start blatantly breaking the law to sabotage the country and hold it hostage like the Trump administration is doing?

At what point do we realize that we will get destroyed if we keep playing by the rules while the people hurting us are breaking every law there is and shitting on the constitution.

If CA NY MA and WA just stopped paying federal taxes the country would be brought to its knees instantly. These blue states are currently having all the federal funds that they more than paid for selectively stripped just because they didn’t support Trump - but yet we keep following orders and paying them? At what point to democrats and the left start breaking the law also?

While I hate to repeat myself, isn't it more constructive to learn how and why Donald Trump still manages to captivate large swarths of the American public? The podcast I highlighted does analyze the use of words and how it's become the case that DT coflates ordering an action with that action actually occurring.

They do point out that he's rolled back on major decisions when it became apparent that it had unexpected consequences.

The joke is 'we only cut BAD spending' and 'we never cut GOOD spending' - the point being, the defintions of good and bad are public reaction.

Say what you will, Donald Trump is the president of the USA and if you want to change things, you need to understand how he operates. I've alreadly highlighted the closed loop between DT and Fox News. He does something, they applaud, he watches Fox and is assured he's a genius. We ALL make mistakes but that inability to EVER accept fault is the weakest link as far as I can tell.

it extends to his base also. It’s why you see supporters of he that have been fired by him, lost their spouses/family to deportation, had their kids die from unvaccination, had to birth unwanted kids, had family die from untreated miscarriages, had to serve 4 years in prison for J6, have had their VA access compromised due to firings, have had their taxes raised while seeing the ultra rich not pay any taxes or less taxes, had their stock portfolio or 401k wiped, lost their welfare benefits ….the list goes on. His supporters that have had their lives ruined in these ways will not admit they were wrong.

After seeing all of this happen to themselves they still don’t regret supporting Trump. The reasons for this are twofold (with a minor contribution from #3)

1) These are simply a different breed of human. They have no humility. They are incapable of admitting a mistake (just like trump). They would rather suffer immensely in horrible ways than admit they were wrong. These people have never apologized for anything and are always the victim.

2) they hate black people more than they care about their own life being destroyed. Trump is very covert with his dog whistle attacks against blacks while he’s much more overt against Mexicans and Muslims; but conservative Americas hatred of blacks is something that we haven’t gotten over since the civil war and most people aren’t really allowed to talk about it but they want nothing more than to see them rounded up and gassed. This might sound a bit extreme and like you don’t hear it - because you don’t because it’s so vile and people would lose their jobs - but go into very anonymous places of the internet where conservatives speak freely and I promise you will encounter this sentiment much more. We’ve seen the majority of Trump supporters cheer on the murder of black people everytime there is one of these unjustified police killings. All you have to do is look at the comments in Fox News when one of these police killings happens and no matter how abhorrent it is, they support it. They won’t come right out and say they want blacks eradicated by force but they will praise these police killings because they do know how evil they are at their core and are somewhat ashamed of it, but we need to stop giving them the benefit of the doubt, this is what they want and if you gain their trust enough they will tell you.

3) they are convinced to at this is a holy war / Armageddon and prophecized by the Bible between the devil and god and that Trump is sent by god to fight the holy war. And/or they are single issue voters that beleieve babies being aborted is the worst thing happening in America. If the hardest part about your life is other ppl having abortions your life is indeed very easy and incredibly sheltered.

That’s all it comes down to. These are simple people. The summary is 1) they are narcissist 2) they hate blacks 3) they are poisoned by religious delusion

None of these things are fixable through democracy or dialogue. MAGA gets this but the rest of America is behind and wont acknowledge it. Thats why they are cheating in elections, breaking laws, and have siezed control of the law enforcement and military so that they can carry out their plan without force impeding it. Thats one thing the rest of America is committing a fatal error in…we still think this is going to be solved by compromise and voting. The sooner the rest of America realizes what I’ve actually described here and realizes compromises won’t happen to solve this the more of a chance America stands. It’s an ugly truth that the center and the left don’t seem to want to acknowledge and they keep telling themselves this can be solved through compromise, but you can’t. The opposition is already being shipped off to camps extrajudicially or threatened with prosecution for wrong think. We’re already here but people won’t admit it.

I detect anger and frustration with the situation in your post and I can understand the sentiment. I'm frustrated and angry also. But I have family members and friends who are Trump supporters and they really are not like this. The ones I know, anyway, are not racist.

I don't doubt there are a few like you describe, but from what I've seen it's not the majority.

It is baffling why they never seem to find fault with DT though. Even when I have supported a president in the past I would readily admit when I disagreed with him. No one agrees with a political leader all the time. It's frustrating in the extreme, and Fox News does seem to play a big role in their narrative.

I wanted to believe that about my family for years.

When I saw them celebrating the killing of Breonna Taylor I couldn’t keep making excuses for them anymore.

i married a black woman, they didn’t openly object so they think that gives them a pass. But they celebrate all of these police killings. They used the N word for two decades raising me and now flat out deny it ever happened. These people will never be honest with you, it’s up to you to reach your own judgments about them not rely on them to tell you what they think

The family members I was thinking about don't allow any racist comments and will openly speak out if someone does make a comment that is derogatory to a race or ethnic group in their presence. How they can support DT is beyond me. But they are very pro-life so I guess it becomes about that. It's not even a subject we can discuss.

But I have friends that support him and I couldn't tell you why they do. I know if asked they would go on and on, but it makes no sense to me. They may as well be speaking another language. I really think the media outlets they choose are playing a huge role though.
