I just wanted to share what hell I went through and see if it was unique. I’ve been taking Oxys for just over 2 years due to back pain. Started with Percocet and then 10mg Oxy. I was up to 400 pills 10mg, a month. I have know. My Dr for decades and she knew how much pain I was in. My pain isn’t fixed but I couldn’t keep taking opioids for multiple reasons.
So I have this really good pain Dr and he sees people like me all the time. He prescribed me Gabapentin and clonidine and suboxone. He told me to stop the oxys and wait 24 hours then take suboxone.
I knew this wasn’t going to be easy, yet the longest I ever went without was maybe 6 hours. So I started at 9am and actually slept quite a bit. I work nights and 9am is my 2am.

I woke up at around noon and my legs wouldn’t stop moving. I was constantly sitting up and laying down. If I focused I could stop the moving to small distances but it was beyond my control. Of course I couldn’t sleep and I was frustrated by that. I was also high from something. Like an out of it high. A long time ago I took too many over the counter sleeping pills by accident and went on this fucked up trip where I didn’t know up from down and was talking about weird shit. This feeling was kinda like that.
All that pretty much stayed the same until around 3 am when my legs and my tossing started to calm down. I was able to sleep. I’m taking this med for overactive bladder and it drys me out badly. Major dry mouth. I skipped that days dose but fuck me I had dry mouth and still do. I drank 4 litres of water through the day and night.
At 9am I took the suboxone and it didn’t really do much as the moving was almost done. It’s now 11pm and I’m coming around. I actually drove and went to the store but I’m still feeling “out of it”. Maybe that’s the suboxone “high” that people say. I work at a shelter and I recently had a guy who was taking suboxone yet wasn’t using opioids and just lied while he was in jail. So I guess some people find it “fun”.
Anyways, does anyone else ever have an experience like that or heard of someone. I know restless leg is a symptom on some lists, but this was like restless leg level 1000. And the feeling high is not a symptom I seem to expect.
Thanks

You will feel somewhat shitty for a few days to a week when you first switch to bupe from other opioids.

This sounds pretty normal. Coming off of fentanyl/tranq dope and onto bupe had me sick for about 3 weeks. One week of violent illness

yes, I am taking care of my 34 yo son at home on a medical detox who has been taking fentanyl/tranq for about a year or so, smoking not shooting. He probably transitioned a little too soon to the subs and now 9 days in, he is still vomiting from time to time.

That may not be an indication of getting on the subs too quickly. Even if all the fent is out of your system, for heavy or longterm users, it's not a seamless transition. You can expect symptoms like that to possibly last a few months. The sub is helpful but it's not a complete replacement of a daily full opiod agonist habit

For myself. I had no energy for about an entire month. Was a real struggle to even walk a few hundred feet. Walking everyday, I believe helped speed things up tho and get me back into shape. I would also get nauseos at night and occasionally experience severe migraines. I was back at about 90 percent in a month or so though

Things that I believe really helped me that aren't often recommended by traditional medicine

1) cold plunges or ice baths. Training myself to frequently do something unpleasant, regardless of if I wanted to or not, every morning

2) 16/8 fasting. Restricting eating to an 8 hour window per day. Helped tremendously with sleep habits and nausea and mental fog

3) High fat/prptein low carb diet. Had me feeling better and less queasy

4) Regular exercise. Even if just a short walk. Sped up my body's recovery, released endorphins, much needed feel good hormones while feeling down

Best of luck to you and your son!

Thank you so much for your reply! That means so much to me that a stranger took the time to respond such as you have. I am sure my son will find these tips very helpful. He is doing well right now. He will receiving an injection tomorrow but he hasn’t really been craving anything & he is taking a strip or half of a strip everyday. As I am helping him move out the house he shared with my ex, his father I truly believe they were both headed towards death. His father had started using with our son, that I struggle with but they are both in recovery & I really do feel they both are done.
But I guess one has to be aware at all times. I look at my son & I have so much love for him that I am glad I didn’t give up & walk away. I set boundaries and he had to realize he couldn’t live this way anymore. I pray to God he gives our family the strength to move past this and heal completely. My ex also moved out of their drug house, so he will live with our daughter for awhile as he has sustained injuries from an accident & needs help now. Anyway thank you again for taking the time to answer.❤️
