I don't know what it is but, I've been waking up too early. I go to bed around 9:00 and end up waking up around 1:00, or 2:00 in the morning every night. I was prescribed Ambien for this, but it's not working. Do you have any suggestions ?

Maybe to try going to bed later? Some people simply need less sleep especially if they are not exausting themselves with physical activity. Then there is light and sound polution and circadian rhythm out of wack. Did you try every single thing from sleep hygiene aspect? Could be lots of things... Hope you figure it out.

I developed that issue once I got older. It fucking sucks. All the old "keeping a regimen" tricks to avoid "falling asleep insomnia" don't work.

Try not to nap, but don't nap at all in the evening. That's poison, you've basically started your night's sleep.
Keep trying to go back to sleep even if you don't really want to. Part and parcel of this is to not look at a clock when you wake up. Only finally get up when you realize you are laying there for a while pretty wide awake.
Your MMV on this one, but... try to get in touch with your dreams more through dreamwork, DMT, Blue Lotus, or all three (not together). That can have a surprisingly big effect.

I think I just need my meds adjusted some more.
I obviously don't know anything about you and watch types of medications are you prescribed but zolpidem is surely not the medication you need. Stated problem is not in inducing sleep but maintaining it, for which zolpidem can be a good choice. At the same time zolidem is very poor for maintaining and prolonging sleeping. Pregabalin did wonders for me when i was taking it 3-4 times a week. 75mg hour before bed and it gave me truly refreshing long deep sleep.

Edit - I literally fell asleep writing this reply and was waken up when my phone hit the floor. Time for bed I guess 🤣

Don't know why I didn't catch that. Any time I've had Zolpidem I've woken up after about 4 hours sleep, even when I was much younger. If you must use a Z drug, try Eszopiclone. (Lunesta)

I believe that there is also Control Release Ambien available. So there are ways to go around short acting effect of zolpidem if you like it's effecs. Or go with Lunesta. Not getting enough sleep is very bad on so many levels. Hope you figure it out.

What recreational substances do you use and how often?

What times of the day do you eat and how large are the meals?

How long before bed do you stop looking at screens?

Right now the three recreational substances I use are Coffee, Cigars and Beer. I snack during the day and I eat one big meal two hours before bedtime. I take Psych meds twice a day. And I stop looking at screens right before I go to bed.

How often do you drink beer and usually how much?

How many cups of coffee do you drink in a day and what time do you stop drinking coffee?

If you stop looking at screens or dim/redshifts your screen at night that may help. Light signals to the hypothalamus to control circadian rhythm, it will keep you awake if it thinks its day time. Bright lights are good early in the morning but things should be dimmer in the evening.

A six pack every two weeks. As for coffee I drink six cups in the morning and then two cups in the afternoon.

Here's a calculator that can show you how much caffeine is in your system, approximating 80mg of caffeine per cup of coffee

You'll still have 200mg caffeine in your system around bed time

Your standard insomnia is Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome, trouble getting to sleep. Waking up too early is Advanced Sleep Phase Syndrome. Are you also very tempted to go to bed earlier? That would be part of that syndrome.

It may just be the sleep drug. (Ambien)

I kept Delayed Sleep Phase Syndrome at bay most of my life with sleep hygiene, good sleep habits as have been mentioned. Advanced sleep Phase Syndrome is a tougher nut to crack. Sleep hygiene is definitely required, but it's not quite as helpful for this one. Bright Light Therapy Melatonin and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) are often also recommended.

Melatonin develops a dependence in me, but I have tried bright light. A full spectrum light on you in the evening helps a lot but just getting out and taking a walk in the sun (in the summer) after supper was a significant difference for me.

But really, it think it's mostly the drug (Ambien). Good sleep hygiene might allow you to not take any sleep drug.

Well if don't take ambien I'll stay awake untill 4:00 in the morning and then I'll wake up at 6:00 in the morning. So, I would only get two hours of sleep a night.
